Thanksgiving’s timing compresses the season, intensifying the rush. early ads and displays are urged. The Citizen plans a special Christmas number on December 15 to aid shoppers.
Class No 9 of the Friends Bible School hosts a Thursday reception at the parsonage from 2 to 5 PM honoring Rev J Edgar Williams and family. The public is invited and church members are urged to attend.
The secretary of the B and L will be at R E Henley's Grocery from 6 to 8 PM Saturday, replacing the planned appearance at Hall's store. The notice directs local residents to attend and engage with the official.
The Ripley Farmers Cooperative Telephone Co held a banquet at Kennedy's Cafe for directors auditing committee operators and line superintendents and their ladies. Guests included Mr and Mrs Todd Leisure Abernathy Siler Cross Ball Bassett Rigsbee Wicker Phillips Rora Walker Buscher Phelps Carthage exchange and others. The office will close Thanksgiving day from 9 to 4. The annual stockholders meeting was held at the town hall Wednesday.
The Woman's Literary Circle met with Mrs Verne Plummer to discuss a dahabiyeh voyage from Cairo to The First Cataract visiting Abydos Dendereh Memphis Luxor Karnak Esneh Edfu Philae and the Aswan dam. Miss Florence B. Hunt outlined Egypt's 6000 year history while Miss Mary Folger read. The group voted to sell Red Cross Christmas seals with profits to the Health Department of the State Federation.
Rural Route 21 residents prepare for holiday gatherings as Miss Elsie Chappell plans Thanksgiving with sister Miss Mary in Danville Illinois. Purdue I U football fan Hazel Binford attended the Bloomington game. Virgil Binford is home from I U for a short break. Howard Winslow visited Columbus over the weekend. John Kitterman of Shirley is due to fill a Walnut Ridge appointment Sunday. Will Reese and sons Ralph and Lowell of Indianapolis visited W H Binford. Reese and sister Delle Reese plan Thanksgiving back in the city. Other Binford visitors include Gurney Drysdale and family and Mrs Susan Parker with Owen.
Henry Binford and family visited Phoebe Pearson and daughter Sunday. Dan Loudenback and wife and Mrs Rachel Bundy were guests of Cassius Gray and family. Miss Ida Jessup stayed with her uncle Lemuel Harrold and wife. Claude and Hansel Miller and Charley Jenny enrolled at Beech Valley making twenty four students. Mrs Al Hill and Mrs John Rowland visited Cynthia White. Dorothy Sipe visited Ruth McIlvaine. Ira Ridlin lost the index finger and it was amputated. Fremont Tanner visited Will Stewart at Rushville. Elizabeth Overman and daughter Edna with Oliver Overman and families to be hosted by Julian Overman for Thanksgiving.
After Rev J Edgar Williams preached on personal work the congregation joined in a consecration service. The chair and officers along with the Bible School and missionary groups were referenced. The evening theme was Our Department the Bible a Code of Conduct with a quartette led by Prof W W Lindley and others.
The Women’s Foreign Missionary Society of the Fletcher M. E. Church will hold a meeting Thursday afternoon December 7 in the League room. Other church missionary societies and all interested are invited. Miss Jennings a returned missionary from China will speak at two o’clock.
Snow and Pritchard struck a strong overflowing water well at 175 feet while drilling for gas on the Thomas Porter farm northwest of Carthage. At 600 feet they found shale gas under great pressure, forcing a halt to work. Gas to be piped to Charlottesville. water may be piped to Mr Porter's house due to high pressure.
A well attended pie supper at Earnest school followed by a spelling match. Miss Lavonne Ruby won a cake as best speller and Miss Pearl Louder received a cake as most popular girl. Proceeds reached about $5, half the Reading Circle Books cost. Teacher Miss Mabel Jones commends community interest.
Rev. I. P. Harbaugh of Pittsburgh Pa has notified the East Street Christian Church of his acceptance as pastor. He will begin regular services Sunday December 24, and will bring his family to Carthage, after the church had been without a pastor for weeks.
Dr and Mrs Clark Gause are guests of relatives at Marion for Thanksgiving. Mrs Gause will probably extend her visit to relatives at Elwood Peru and Portland.
