Local notes and a runaway horse disturb New Castle

Miss Grace Binford visits her brother Arthur in New Castle while R C Hill serves as a Masonic Grand Lodge delegate in Indianapolis. A young horse owned by Clyde Henley ran wild through several streets after its rider left to close a gate, stopping at shops and a home before being caught at the livery barn.

W L C Annual Guest Night at Henley Home

The Woman's Literary Circle hosted its annual guest meeting at the home of Mr and Mrs R Ed gar Henley with fifty four attendees. Mr Jesse Pugh and Miss Martha Hoggsett entertained, delivering musical selections and piano solos while ladies served raspberry salad and sweets. Out of town guests included Mr J M Stone and Mrs Clarence Weaver.

Barber Shop Sold as Jones Leaves Carthage

A. C. Jones sold his barber shop to Cleveland Beher who will take possession June 1. The new proprietor will keep George Winslow and Forrest Rawls and hire a fourth man, with Mr Beher handling the shop’s dirt and cigars. Jones plans to leave Carthage with his family, having run a well regarded business and home on Walnut street.

No arrangements have been made for memorial day in the area though longtime volunteers may again prepare bouquets and flowers. Few veterans remain and without a G. A. R. Post interest wanes as the generation distant from 1865 tends to favor leisure over remembrance.

Narrow Escape For Carthage Pleasure Party

Mrs Wm Junken recounts a near tragedy at Urbana QC where a party of pleasure seekers was pulled across the reservoir by a motor boat with two trailers. A hidden log caused the motor to explode, telescoping the trailers and wrecking three boats. Passengers, including Squire J. W. Bishop and Ben S. Bishop, were rescued and brought to safety.

Prospering On the Coast in Chino Talbert Drilling 278-Foot Well

Clark Talbert, new 40 acre landholder near Chino, hired N S Rice to drill a 278 foot well with 110 feet gravel at depth. Rice calls the well among the best in the country and it is expected to yield 150 inches of water or more. Talbert plans 20 acres to alfalfa this year and 20 more next year powered by a 20 HP motor and pump.

Fund Drive For Earlham College Prompts Local Canvass

Prof E P Trueblood of Richmond and others have organized a canvass in the territory to raise funds for Earlham College. Nearly $3000 has been subscribed to date as R E Henley tours the area in his automobile with the fundraisers.
