Heavy weekend rains slowed corn planting in Rush County with only a small percentage sown by mid May. County agent E F Brown cites wet fields and possible replanting while urging fertilizer use and seed-bed improvement to hasten maturity and offset delays. Wheat stands fall slightly below normal but clover remains strong, aiding soil fertility.
Mr and Mrs Dale Tyner escaped serious harm when a fierce wind storm tore away the front ell of their James Tyner farm house near Western Grove in Henry county. He held the door as the roof collapsed. she lay beneath wreckage shielded by a sill. Neighbors aided them. the couple’s losses were substantial and partly insured.
Mrs. Minnie Adkins hosted her Indianapolis cousins Elmer Hilligoss and Bertha Cox and Ed Walker of Manilla for a Sunday dinner honoring Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Iddings of Seattle. The Iddings had not met their Hoosier kin until last Thursday when they began a weeklong visit, they will travel to West Virginia for two weeks and stop again in Indiana on their return.
Morristown defeats Carthage 4 to 0 at Morristown as Gardner and Evans split mound duties. Evans fanned eleven over five hits and four walks, while Morristown committed one error. Notable plays include Gardner’s one handed catch and Schultz’s two running catches. Miss Helen Addison and Miss Mary Ellen McCarty of Carthage Indiana will participate in Butler University education college May Day pageant on May 10 1933. The open campus event features foreign costumes and dances as parents of students and faculty guests attend. More than 200 students perform in the farewell celebration before the college moves to the University proper in Fairview. A reception for parents and Carthage alumnae follows.
Tax records from nine units including Glenwood and Carthage show total collections of 11836.95 and delinquencies of 29414.64 for spring tax. some units rose in delinquency while others fell due to lower valuations and tax rates.
The Womans Missionary Society of the Friends church hosted an elaborate Wednesday night program at the church. Donations via a miniature bell counted about $12 for the silver collection, while displays featured quilts and 1825 coverlets. Indian relics loaned by Henry Binford and Paul Gordon’s collection drew interest, with readings on Native American life and a concluding playlet about civilization’s debt to ab original peoples.
Abnormal rains raised the river to its highest level since 1913 washing soil from fields and leaving logs in lowlands. A Westland neighborhood storm destroyed houses and barns, part of a state highway near Knightstown washed out halting traffic, and a Rushville pond flooded South Main Street forcing cancellations of a baseball game and a track meet. One death by drowning reported Marion Stephens 16 who with Russell Elder 7 drowned in the pond. coroner Kennedy said an epileptic spasm likely preceded the drowning.
The library loaned 1027 books and magazines in April. Erick Lewis Allen’s Yesterday is highlighted as a notable donation gift from Howard E. Henley, with other gifts including The Hoosier by Mrs. O. W. Righter and garden guides The American Flower Garden The Yard and Garden and How to Plant the Home Grounds. Quebec’s Department of Highways donated Along Quebec's Highways a tourist guide detailing cities villages and parishes along main routes.
Rushville hosts county attendance day for grades 1 to 9 with perfect attendance. Carthage group attends 10 00 am at Princess Theatre. Mothers admitted for 25 cents. After show, a park picnic lunch provided by each child brings own. Meeting time 8 30 am in front of McCarty Drug Store.
A. L. Williamson says Rush county will send 26 men to Indianapolis for medical exams before two weeks of conditioning at Camp Knox Kentucky. Those passing will depart for Camp Knox for intensive training to join a 5 000 man Indiana unit for the reforestation project.
Frank Brisko of Milwaukee prepares for the May 30 Indianapolis 500 driving two cars including a four wheel drive Miller powered machine and a front wheel drive, with Milwaukee fans to cheer him with steins of beer.
Rush county plans for a local unit of the conservation army recruit men aged 18 to 25 who are unmarried US citizens with dependents. They receive 30 dollars monthly for dependents, 24 dollars of that as cash, with board room clothing and transport covered by the government. Enrollment is voluntary and departures to Indianapolis by school bus will be government funded.
The Ye Olde Gange group met at Grace Porter’s home in Knightstown on Monday night to honor Donald Bert Dunn. Members presented Mr. and Mrs. D. P. Dunn with a silk carriage robe and pillow as guests shared refreshments. The group suggested the new member be called Don Dunn.
Rev. Smithee and his wife and son James with Mrs. William McMichael of near Carthage and Miss Bertha Rumple drove to Fountain City Indiana for a Sunday school convention held by the Southern District of the Indiana Conference.
Several Sunday school members were absent due to high water. Epworth League traveled to Manilla for a county rally with N I Schoolfield speaking and Hubert Hunt performing. Upcoming services include prayer meeting, choir rehearsal, a League social, and a union service led by Thelma Gardner and Howard Ewbank with Henry Stinger directing the band.
The Friends Church held a Sunday evening worship planned by Mrs. Stone's Bible School class with musical selections by Mrs. Carr Mrs. Porter Miss Kyser Mrs. Humes and Hoyt Addison. A pageant on motherhood traditions followed accompanied by Mrs. Tetrick on piano. Next Sunday union services in Carthage Auditorum feature Howard Ewbank of Rush County United Dry Forces as guest speaker inviting Ripley township attendance.
The Wesleyan Church reports prayer meetings every Tuesday evening at the church with about fifty attendees last Tuesday. The Cottage prayer meeting this week will be at Mr and Mrs Williamson on Water Street. The Sabbath school aim is thanked for reaching a little over 100 attendees with 108 present, inviting all to return next Sunday.
Rev. Crawley will formally receive new members during morning services. Sunday school starts at 9 30 with worship at 10 45. The church joins union services at the auditorium Sunday evening with Howard Ewbank as speaker and planned special music.

She was guest of Miss Nelle McCorkle at Cambridge City Wednesday. The Friendship class of the M E church, postponed, will meet Wednesday night at the home of Mrs Grace Porter.
