Dollar Day promises bargains and band concert in Carthage

Local merchants sponsor a Dollar Day on Saturday May 17 with bargains at most shops plus a free show and band concert. The town buzzes about coal deliveries, trains, new homes, a building boom, and a lighthearted mix of notes from residents and visitors.

Births Surpass Deaths in April in Rushville County

April reports from Drs. Green and Wooden show 20 births and 11 deaths countywide, with Rushville recording 13 births and five deaths. April is the smallest month for both births and deaths this year, and no contagious diseases were reported. List of April births includes Charles William Wall and LindaLou DeWeese, along with Rushville residents such as David Bernell Dalrymple and Judith Ann Field.

Charles W Beason 76 Died At Home Funeral Rites Held

Charles Wesley Beason aged 76 died Sunday at 5 30 p m at his Hancock county home after years of illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Thompson Funeral Home with Rev C V McMillan overseeing and a quartet singing Farewell songs. Interment followed in Simmons cemetery. He was born in Rush county the son of William and Barbara Benson and married Laura Catt November 11 1887. Survivors include his widow two brothers John near Carthage and Elbert near Greenfield. Out of town attendees listed various relatives from Indianapolis Alexandria Greenfield Pendleton Elwood and Tipton.

Carthage Hardware Announces Semiannual Dollar Day Event

Carthage Hardware hosts a Saturday May 17 demonstration with Bargains at the bargain counter on ranges Kelvinators paints washers rakes sprinklers shovels and more. Free cokes will be provided all day and the Carthage high school band will play selections during the event led by proprietor Mr Brooks and ongoing participation by other Carthage merchants.

4-H Club Officers Attend Training Meeting

The annual 4-H club officers training meeting was held in the Rushville courthouse on Wednesday May 7th. Emergency Operation On 11 Year Old Jimmie Webb

Jimmie Webb son of Mr and Mrs Everett Webb underwent an emergency appendicitis operation Sunday night at Methodist hospital Indianapolis. He was recovering from measles which worsened his condition. He is progressing as well as can be expected. Jimmie turns eleven on Tuesday May 13. Mrs Webb remains with him at the hospital.

Farm raids near Manilla target Wendell Willkie and Harold Moore on the Willkie farm thirty-one young mixed pigs about fifty pounds each seven other pigs eight sacks of mixed feed taken from Harold Norris farm Deputy Sheriff Bert Osborn and Sheriff Paul Bennington investigated the thefts.

Granddaughter Rosemary Miner Receives Scholastic Honors

Rosemary Miner, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. N. Miner of this place, earned top scholastic honors at Indiana University. A junior and daughter of Prof. and Mrs. Floyd Miner of Pendleton, she was celebrated as the high honors recipient. Mr. and Mrs. Miner spent the weekend with her at the university.

Ripley 4-H Boys Meet and Plan Township Tour

Ripley township 4-H club met at Philip Winslow’s home with thirteen members and one guest. Clifton Howard reported on officer training and leaders, Bill Spacey on the 4-H judging show. A committee of Larry Apple, Bob Nigh and Spacey planned the June 10 tour. Softball schedules were handed out and refreshments served.

Three-vehicle crash on State Road No 3 near Greenfield

Three autos damaged in a late Thursday crash on State Road No 3 south of Greenfield. William H. Corrigan of Fountain Town faces a charge of operating while intoxicated in the case filed by Justice of Peace John Mulvihill. Russell Logan and Robert Birch were involved, with Logan’s car overturning and all occupants shaken but bruised.

Vacation Bible School to Begin May 26 at Carthage

Vacation Bible School will meet in the Carthage school house from May 26 to the first week in June. Sessions run 8:30 to 11:00 a.m. with four departments Kindergarten Primary Junior and Intermediate led by Edna Kennedy Willella Henley Mary Gray Rev Clifford Shaw Nell Beher and Rev C V McMillan. Death of former Carthage resident Orion O. Wolf

Orion O. Wolf died last week in Marion General Hospital after a short illness. Survived by son Russell of Marion, daughters Mrs Harold Parker and Mrs James Babcock of Anderson, brothers Arthur Wolf Indianapolis Dale Wolf Norwood Ohio Carl Wolf Ft Lauderdale Fla Ralph Wolf Pocatello Idaho, sister Mrs Leslie Rigdon Ft Lauderdale Fla. Mrs Wolf died in January. The Wolf family had lived in Carthage for several years.
