Mrs. Lois Kennedy of Arlington files for divorce from Robert O. Kennedy alleging cruel and inhuman treatment. She seeks custody of two minor children and a support allowance. The couple married July 3, 1936 and separated April 22 of this year.
The will of Mrs Rebec a Healey was probated last Saturday in Rushville Circuit Court. About half the estate goes to her half brother Harry Swisher of Indianapolis with the rest to a Richmond niece and nephew. Howard E Healey is named executor with bond set at 47000 dollars.
Mr and Mrs Al Stapp are constructing a new six room home on the Mays Carthage road about one and a half miles east of Carthage.
Mr. and Mrs. Lee Silver announce the engagement of their daughter Rowena to Pvt. Jack Holliday of Ft. Eustis Virginia. The couple plans a future wedding after his military service.
Regular meeting last Monday night resulted in contracts let for resurfacing town streets this summer.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Grizzell and their two children were injured Wednesday afternoon when the new Dodge pickup they were driving north toward Knightstown lost control at the first hill north of Mrs. Harry Stacy farm. Mr. Grizzell broke a leg and bruised, Mrs. Grizzell sprained back, children cut and lacerated needing stitches. all taken to hospital. The couple had owned the truck only a few days and it had 611 miles on it.
Former Carthage resident Hollis Ewing, now at Rush Memorial Hospital, is recuperating from a heart attack suffered recently.
Two women, Mrs. Erastus Brown near Mays and Mrs. Walter Gardner of Center, have been admitted to Rush Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Mr. and Mrs. George Moore and Mrs. Forrest Moore moved into their newly purchased home of Mrs. Anna Sipe on North Main. Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Trowbridge and their son moved Tuesday into the house vacated by the Moores.
The Carthage High School Blue Raiders defeated Manilla 9-1 on Tuesday, extending their spring baseball streak to seven straight wins with no losses. It marked Manilla’s first defeat of the season.
Henry Loveall a Lynn High senior and nephew of William Loveall of Carthage opened with 11 feet to break the Lynn pole vault mark set at 10 ft 11 in. He cleared 11 ft 2 in and 11 ft 4 in before missing at 11 ft 6 in. McKinley High School of Muncie won the meet with Lynn second as observers praised the vaulting display.
The Carthage Spring Music Festival is set for Friday May 6 at 8:00 p.m. in the High School Gym. Three choral and two band groups will perform selections including Ho For California, Without a Song, June is Bustin Out All Over, Wonderful Copenhagen, and more. Music awards will be presented and admission is free.
Ann Stager of Carthage Chapter is elected Grand President at the National Convention held in Terre Haute with over 225 members registered and 139 officers and delegates attending. New Grand Council officers include Lucille Reeves, Maggie Brighton, Ruby Mercer, Frances Fisher, Patt Janz, and Irene Pfeiffer, with Esther Conard presiding.
Mary Lou Alexander chairs a Carthage Alumni gathering urging all alumni to submit reservations. Attendees are asked to call Carthage 140 to RSVP for the event this year.
Public Service Company of Indiana filed a petition with the Public Service Commission for revised rates to raise about 1.9 million dollars, roughly six percent of gross income. Company officials cite investments for better electric service and higher recent labor, material, expansion costs, and higher federal taxes reducing net earnings, said President R A Gallagher.
An eight-year-old Charlottesville boy, Raymond Earl Cooper, was killed instantly at 4 10 am Sunday when struck by a westbound Pennsylvania Railroad train near Carth age Road crossing. The boy sat on the tracks as the engineer saw him several hundred yards away but could not stop. Survivors include his parents six brothers and one sister and maternal grandmother and an aunt.
Mr and Mrs Russell Roland visited Mr and Mrs Robert Roland and children near Cumberland Sunday. They also called on the Manche family in Carthage Friday. Virgil Roland and Charity Roland called on Russell Roland Sunday. W A Dhonau and W H Barbour joined Dho nau to Noblesville then Indianapolis. Max Brown and son of Knightstown visited Rushville Sunday with Markes McClurg and son Randy Bill. F J Bly and Bessie Hazelrigg Converse visited over the weekend with Ed Bly and son.
The 1954 amendments create a disability freeze to protect old age and survivors benefits for those who are or were disabled. Applicants must show at least five years of covered work in ten years before disability, with six months of disability, lasting long and indefinite, and must apply before July 1957 for retroactive effects. Information requests go to the Richmond District SSA office in Indiana.
Farm youth 12 and older in rural Rush County are invited to enroll Friday May 6 at 3 30 p m in the county extension office. A farm home tour and project briefing follow with leaders Mrs C W Buhler Jr and Miss Lenore Foster in charge. Parents should attend to learn project details.

Mrs. James R. Lawson of Greensburg spoke on unusual words and idioms during the annual Officers Luncheon of Rush County Home Demonstration Clubs at East Street Christian Church Carthage. Seventy five homemakers attended and were served by junior and senior girls with musical interludes from Mrs. John Looney and Mrs. Wayne Logan.
Indiana observes National Home Demonstration Week with nearly 700 Rush County homemakers in 17 clubs. Leaders train to demonstrate home techniques, covering fruits and vegetables, crafts, meals, and aging plans while Purdue specialists assist. Raymond Manche died Thursday at 5 30 a m after a long illness. He suffered a stroke over a year ago and had been in declining health. A Carthage native born May 12 1902 he lived in the community all his life. Survivors include his widow two daughters Mrs Ronald Bussard of Roann Indiana and Mrs Charles Roland of Carthage two sons Max of Indianapolis and Ross at home one sister Mrs Ruth Souder of Carthage. Funeral at Thompson Funeral Home Saturday at 2 p m.
Mr and Mrs Henry Stinger led a Sunday afternoon tour sponsored by the Shelby County Historical Society. The event highlighted local sites and attracted community interest.
Mr and Mrs John Young of Jonesboro Indiana visited Al McDaniel Charles May of Carthage and Everett Price of Arlington Saturday evening. On Tuesday evening Russell Roland and Lora Reedy visited Earl Roland family near Morristown for Mr Rolland birthday. Home made ice cream was enjoyed.
