The Better Business Association will hold its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday May 7 at Geise Restaurant. Morton Memorial swept the 1963 Rush County track title, with Carthage taking second place.
Mrs. Guy Ewing remains about the same at Rush Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Nelle Newby has been ill for weeks at home but is improved. Mrs. Earl McCorkle has been at Community Hospital in Indianapolis ten days for observation and treatment and is expected home this weekend.
Carthage students from 7th grade home economics presented a fashion show at the Community Center last Thursday April 25 drawing a large crowd. Selections included basic dresses suits skirts and children's wear with piano music by Mrs. Lyle Plank and page boys Craig Nafuse Dan Hunt assisting. Entertainment featured Miss Patty McCorkle dance students Rita McDaniel Deanna Gorman Mary Patton Lynette Stephens and Craig Lafuse plus a Ten Teens vocal group performing April Showers. ushers Misses Sherry Mechain Darlene Barry Arlene Ruby Julie Ewing guided guests. new office hours Giles W Garrett manager of the Richmond social security office announced the Rushville station at the Rushville Post Office will be open every other week starting immediately with Thursday May 2 and thereafter every other Thursday. inquiries to 216 National Road West Richmond Ind.
Northwestern district reports muddy streams and poor fishing due to recent rains though silver bass and crappies are being taken at Lake Schaffer and Lake Freeman with artificial bait and small minnows. Northeastern finds crappies and bluegills at Lake Wawasee with artificial bait worms and minnows. some lake trout and pike caught. Central Indiana notes muddy streams east of the Wabash River, but Morse, Geist, Mansfield, Cataract, Izaak Walton Lake show fair to good catches of crappie bass bluegill with several four pound bass reported. Southwestern reports exceptionally good fishing at Hindustan Falls and William Dam with large catfish white perch, crappie and bluegill in pits and bayous. bass taken with red worms night crawlers. Southeastern low waters but some bass previously caught with wobbling spoons and bait.
National Home Demonstration Week runs April 29 to May 4 with clubs statewide presenting exhibits and programs. The Rush County Mixers Club began in March 1952 with nine charter members, five remaining active today including Gladys.
Cindy Brooks will represent Carthage High School as the Girls State delegate in June at Bloomington Indiana. She is a junior active in National Honor Society Junior class treasurer yearbook staff varsity cheerleader and band majorette and serves as Sunday School secretary at Fletcher Methodist Church. The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors her with Sheryl Magee as alternate and Arlington Lions Club sponsors her for the Carthage unit. Also noted are local club officers and Rush County Mixers community leaders with ongoing Home Demonstration activities and fair exhibits.
The Knightstown Brotherhood and Sisterhood will hold their regular monthly meeting and officer election on Tuesday May 7 at 8 p m at the Lindsay Hotel Knights Town Refreshments will be furnished.
Mrs. Robert McKain reports 1963 alumni cards have been mailed by the Carthage Alumni Association. For missing cards and banquet reservations contact Bill Alexander, president, or Mrs. Fred Parish.
Mr Bayard Baker spoke last Thursday afternoon at the Henry County Historical Society meeting at the New Castle museum. His topic was Ifs In Lincoln's Life, presenting insights on the Civil War era and key moments in Abraham Lincoln's career.
At the Rush County Extension Office on April 26, twenty rural and urban groups outlined a full one year plan. Kenneth Johnson led a review of past activities including last year’s Good Neighbor plaque and a February workshop in Rushville. The group reported Rush County’s four State plaques and emphasized coordination and broader participation for future projects.
Donations pour in as the baseball diamond revamp proceeds, with contributions from Kappa Kappa Sigma, Mr. and Mrs. Howard, Forrest Pasionata, Russell Salem, Robert Walker, Sherman Sion, Dale May, Claude Portson, and others totaling at least 677.07 dollars. The growing donor list signals strong community support for the project.
Construction has begun on a new Wiiters Accounting Service office at 12 East First Street Carthage. The building will serve five employees with a waiting room and storage space and is expected to open to the public around August 1. Mr and Mrs Robert Winters and their son will reside in a home attached to the new office.
The Carthage Band Boosters meet at the school building to finalize plans for the alumni dinner. As the last meeting of the school year more members are urged to attend.
Carthage High led by Kit Porter Spence and David Cloud won a rugged triangular meet at Hancock Central, scoring 52 to hold off host Mays by two. Porter and Spence doubled in hurdles and sprints while Cloud swept the 440 and high jump, boosting Carthage to top team honors.
Carthage Band Boosters hosted a dinner April 30 at the Community Center honoring four year band seniors Deanna Carroll Larry Fen Carroll Carl Robbins Kathy Geise and Pam Clark received letters and trophies Entertainment included a trumpet trio and a flute quartet. Rush County Superintendent Gerald C. Carmony spoke at a National Honor Society initiation.

Container Corporation of America reports a 12 percent rise in net earnings for the first quarter of 1963, reaching 4.287 million on sales of 82.591 million. President Leo H. Schoenhofen cites gains in overseas and domestic operations despite lower prices for fabricated packaging. Shares earned 0.39 and a dividend of 1.00 per share is declared for May 31 with May 20 record date.
Miss Judy Kennedy spent a weekend at Purdue University visiting Miss Sue Mosier. Mr and Mrs Robert Jackson visited Sunday evening with Mr and Mrs Leroy Sipes and family at Maple Valley. Mrs Robert Jackson took her mother Mrs Della of Maple Valley to St John’s Hospital in Anderson for treatment and observation Sunday. Sunday afternoon guests of Mr and Mrs Noah Leisure were Mr and Mrs James L Scott of nearby area.
