The Sinclair Refining Co buys the Beher lot on North Main and the Ellis property from James and Roy Ellis, planning a modern super service station. The Beher lot sold for about 1650 and the Ellis property around 4000, with switches by Guy Ewing and Son. The Alma Stone home on North Walnut street also changes hands for 4500 with furnishings included. A countywide real estate boom pushes March sales to 266000 across Rush County, with 91 parcels changing ownership including a 90 acre farm for 14000.
Mr and Mrs Sherman Earlywine purchased the home of Mr and Mrs Ralph Mosier on North East Street. They plan to move in soon while the Mosier family relocates to a property on North Walnut Street. Sale price was not disclosed but reported in the neighborhood of 2500 dollars.
The annual high school oratorical contest will be held Tuesday at 8 pm in Fletcher Methodist Church directed by Yard Baker. Nine contestants are all girls from grades nine through twelve with topics ranging from Liberty and the Bible to The New South and Our Heritage. The A J Carr awards include a gold cup for first place and medals for second and third, with first place names inscribed on the cup.
Sam Gold Jr remains listed as a passenger agent for the Chicago and Southern Air Line stationed at Indianapolis airport. His role centers on assisting travelers and coordinating boarding and baggage services.
Interesting visitors this week include John Hughes seeking vital file information and John Smith a longtime printer from the New Castle Courier Times. Will McKee runs for county treasurer, B R Nelson heads Morristown Blue River Packing, and County Agent Spuller attends events as the political pot begins to boil ahead of May 7.
Chester Livingston, long associated with Knightstown department stores, is appointed store manager at Goodman's Store Knightstown. The George Williams Company previously owned the store, which Goodman interests bought in March 1945 and fully remodeled with new merchandising and policy. Livingston has history with Williams from 1923 to 1936 and returned as a salesman in 1942.
Friday afternoon service at 1 30 pm attended by many. Rev James DeWeerd of Fairmount, former army chaplain wounded in service, delivered a splendid message. Miss Pierce music director led the music and local business men closed shops to cooperate.
Henry and Ann Stager of Alsta Containers, Inc. purchase a two passenger L6 Army Trainer to be based at Plainfield Indiana with hangar space at Shelbyville. A commercial pilot will instruct them and fly the plane after inspection. The aircraft to be used at Otto McCarty and Howard Henley fields near Carthage and will participate in the Shelbyville Air Show for the 10th District convention.
Orville Ramsey of Greenfield bought nine acres of the former Arvey Whittaker estate near Carthage and moved there this week. Harry Musgrove and wife of Greenfield moved to the Mrs Ellen McIlvaine tenant house west of Carthage. Eddie Stephens and wife moved from the Newsom block to rooms at Mrs Sylvester Ray Sr. home on South East street.
The Rush District first aid meet in Boy Scout work was held here Tuesday night. Five teams participated: Arlington Charlottesville and Carthage supplied teams. All teams passed the tests with a 90 grade and qualify for the council meet in Richmond next Tuesday night April 30.
Mrs Lizzie Earnest reports most of her chickens stolen from her southeast residence Monday night. She has been ill for several days. The incident raises concern about local poultry losses and security.
The Bertram Howard Post No 316 American Legion hosts a fish fry this Thursday night April 25. All veterans who are not members are invited to attend and get acquainted.
A letter from the State Adjutant’s office received at noon Thursday places the local American Legion post first in membership for the 10th District. Total membership now stands at 119.
Easter Sunday services filled Carthage churches with nearly full houses and special music. East Street Christian Church welcomed Rev. Walter Crawley from Andersonville and served a dinner in his honor while Mrs. Crawley could not attend. Other congregations led by Dr. Robert Spangler Rev. Scull and Rev. Howard Crim featured festive programs. Out-of-town visitors attended multiple churches as each held sunrise services and Easter sermons.
Mrs. J. A. Lineback continues to improve slowly from recent illness. Mrs. Henry L. Stinger, who was taken ill Monday, is improving. Mrs. Sarah Stager has not been so well the past week. Mrs. Harry O. Pitts remains the same. Ed Bly is improving after a severe attack of streptococcic sore throat.
The Rush County Beef Cattle Feeders and Breeders announce their annual spring tour on Thursday May 2 in the northern part of the county. The committee chaired by Burl Hinchman met April 18 to finalize plans and will depart from the county agent's office at 8 15 am visiting listed farms before a noon meal served by Center Christian church and a program with speakers from Purdue University B and O railroad and the Cincinnati and Indianapolis markets. Howard Clark is president of the local association.
Rush County Fair Board members Burl Hinchman Donald Alexander and Ertle Price and county agent C L Spuller attended the Southeastern Indiana Fair Circuit meeting in Portland last Thursday. Representatives from fair associations across the region discussed this year’s fair attractions and operations, with much time spent on 4-H club activities. The next circuit meeting will be held in Rushville on Friday May 17.
Mrs. A. J. Carr with Mrs. Bayard Baker conclude the drive to cover territories not reached by the Lions club. Those uncontacted are asked to turn donations over to Parvel Moore secretary of the Lions club or to Mrs. Carr or Mrs. Baker.
Jack Porter visits his parents Mr and Mrs Thurman Porter while attending navy prep school at Bainbridge Maryland.
A town petition in Carthage shows near unanimous support to set clocks forward one hour at 2:00 p.m. Sunday April 28 1946 aligning with neighboring towns. No ordinance yet but council may formalize at May 6 meeting with local businesses backing the change.
The Lodbusters of Center township elected Thurman Apple president Carl McDaniel as vice president Bob Myers as secretary and treasurer Nelson Newhouse as news reporter Howard Addison as recreational leader David Peggs as song leader and Forrest Peggs as health and safety leader. New record books were distributed by Mr Watts assistant county agent at Carl McDaniel's home session.
Nearly 80 growers families and 40 club members attended the tomato growers school at Mays High School sponsored by Mays Packing Corp. Purdue extensionist Roscoe Fraser led films and a panel with Francis Gordon Harry Tumility and C L Spuller. Fraser noted high yields from Gordon and discussed direct seeding as popular in Indiana while 4 H clubs were urged to enroll and enjoy potential profits.
Ora Callahan presided as retiring president at the organization session held Friday. Officers elected include Bobby Gardner president Noel Callahan vice president Dean Hodge secretary treasurer Robert Veatch news reporter Joe Swain song leader Verlin Fisher health and safety leader Richard Oldham and Johnny Nelson recreational leaders Ora Callahan parliamentary critic The group will meet the third Thursday each month next session set for May 16 in the Arlington school vocational agriculture room.
John D. Leslie and Ruby Matheny of Carthage secured a marriage license and were married in Rushville by Justice of the Peace Ben A. Cox.
