Woodrow Mauk of Blountsville Indiana was arrested Sunday afternoon by Town Marshal Hugh Trowbridge for reckless driving. He was arraigned in justice of peace court and Monday morning pleaded guilty paying a total of $14.90 including a $1 fine.
Five year old Joseph Charles Knott was found wandering near the Arlington Carthage road early Thursday. Town Marshal Trowbridge investigated and learned he lived at the Oscar Van Dyke home and is Kenneth Knott’s son, employed at the Norris Fertilizer plant in Rushville. He was released to his father.
Mr and Mrs Eugene Dudley have arrived home after months in France. They are visiting Mrs Dudley’s parents Mr and Mrs Joseph Alexander and family.
A giant egg was brought to The Citizen Office by Fletcher Edwards on Wednesday. The egg measures nine and a half inches around the long way and six inches in circumference and weighs five ounces.
Carthage Fire Department rushed Thursday afternoon to the Oma Webb property where a barn was found ablaze. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames with only a small loss reported.
Larry Morris son of Mr and Mrs Charles Morris of Wilkinson received the V F W Sportsmanship trophy at the annual Athletic banquet last Friday evening. He scored 387 points last season averaging 18 per game and held the best foul shooting percentage. Morris played on varsity teams four years and helped two sectional winners. Freshman and sophomore years were in Charlottesville where Charlottesville won the sectional in 1954 Greenfield. Wilkinson won in 1955. He plans to attend Wake Forest or University of Minnesota.
Mays High School basketball players will be honored at a 6:30 p m dinner next Monday in the Mays gymnasium. Community members are urged to attend and bring prepared baskets and table service. Players and leaders need not bring items. mothers of the players are asked to assist with serving.
Mrs Anna Wagoner widow of Ernest Wagoner died Friday in Spencer Indiana. Funeral services were held at Walnut Ridge Sunday at 3 oclock p m. The Wagoners owned a farm near Walnut Ridge and had many friends in the community.
Rush County Vocational Teacher and Extension Workers Association gathered at Kenneth Brashaber's home in Mays on March 21 for their dinner meeting. They advanced plans for the County Dairy Judging Contest on April 21 with Haydon King and Bearl Addison agreeing to judge. A 4 H Metal Roofing demonstration is set for April 2 with Bill Wicker Harold Campbell and Kenneth Brashaber organizing a venue. The next meeting is scheduled April 25 at Ernie Privett's home.
Dr and Mrs Richard McNabb returned Saturday evening from a short vacation in Florida. The P T A is having an Easter event and asks parents and teachers to donate to help make it a success. For information call local PTA members. Sale at Citizen Office, P T A Committee.
Rushville's Civil Defense plans to extend radio communications to all Rush County fire departments and sheriffs offices with a central control at Rushville police station. Funding would be split between the federal government and local revenues. The system targets war and peacetime use, aiding coordination, reducing duplication, and improving law enforcement across Carthage Glenwood Milroy Manilla Raleigh and other towns pending approvals from federal officials and Marion County authorities. David Grocox of Carthage joins local defense training and offers to answer questions.
Mrs Edgar V Ruby was admitted to Jackson Nursing Home in Rushville on Wednesday. Her condition remains unchanged.

A Friday night birthday surprise for Mrs. George Fancher at her Arlington home drew many relatives and friends from Carthage Rushville and nearby. Separate items mention upcoming E L B O W meetings and a surprise birthday dinner hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Edwards southwest of Carthage for five Carson family birthdays.
Arlington High School and junior high basketball team members and cheerleaders will be honored at a pitch in supper at the school Thursday evening. Serving starts at 6 30. Attend and bring well filled baskets and own table service though not required. Mothers of players and cheerleaders asked to help with serving. Marvin Wood of New Castle, named coach of the new Washington Township school in Marion County, will be principal speaker.
Rush County Garden Club held its annual banquet Friday night at the Main Street Christian church in Rushville. Purdue horticulture specialist E. R. Honeywell spoke on Annuals and Perennials for the Home Garden with colored slides. Entertainment came from the Haehl family of Manilla. Door prize was a bouquet of snapdragons won by Mrs. Guy Ewing. Members attending included Loyall Hunt, Hensler, Forrest Beck, Harold Ruby, Nelle Newby, Joanna Gibson, Gouldie Kyser, and others.
A booklet naming over 300 Rush County 4-H members and adult winners will be distributed at the county achievement program Wednesday night April 4 at 7 30 p m in Milroy High School. The event includes Milroy music department entertainment and honors for a notable county contributor. Refreshments will follow served by Home Demonstration clubs and Farm Bureau departments.
The Christian Helpers Sunshine Circle will meet next Thursday afternoon in the homes of Mrs. Ethylene Parish with co hosts Joanna Gibson Maude Shutt Lavonne Spence and Marietta May. Devotions by Bertha Beck. Sunday birthday dinner honors daughter Mrs. Leland Hankins of Muncie with Mr. and Mrs. Hankins and son Mark present.
On March 21 1956 the District 4 H and F F A Judging and Demonstration contest in Indianapolis saw Rush County Forestry team win a slot for the State Forestry Contest at the State Fair in September. Teams led by Bill Wicker and Clyde Bond posted top scores with multiple placements across forestry dairy entomology crops poultry and more.
Richard T. James of the Hoosier Motor Club promotes the Be Extra Alert on Rainy Days theme for April. Raymond Grabowski of Cass Technical High School designed the winning poster chosen by a panel of judges for the AAA National Traffic Safety Poster Contest.
Henry L. Stinger addressed New Salem High School students during convocation hour Monday. The talk covered guns and canes and was sponsored by the senior class.
Elizabeth Jinks 74 longtime Rush County resident died last Friday at Rush Memorial Hospital after a three week stay. Born January 1, 1882 in Laurel she was married to Rolla Jinks and survived by two daughters Bertha and Ermel Nugent, a half brother Vernie Dice and a half sister Mrs John Jinks. Funeral services were held Monday at Master & Sons Mortuary with Rev. Herbert Johnson officiating and burial in East Hill Cemetery. The Jinks family formerly lived near Carthage on the Morris farm.
Ripley, Walker and Union towns lead the Red Cross fundraising drive as several communities push toward a record year. Organizers urge continued contributions to ensure a highly successful campaign.
Mrs. Katie Walker Weaver 76 formerly of Rushville and Carthage died at her Knightstown home at 9 45 Monday. She was daughter of Joe and Olive Abernathy and member of Fletcher Methodist church. Survived by three sisters and one brother. Funeral 2 PM Wednesday at Butcher Funeral Home Knightstown with entombment in Rushville East Hill mausoleum. She was the wife of Edward Walker formerly of the Adkins family.
A church message during Easter warns that many assume universal salvation and stresses that eternal life comes only through the Bible. It cites Luke 13 24 and Matthew 7 14 22, urges entering the narrow gate, and notes endurance to the end as essential for salvation. It contrasts verbal assent with living obedience in Christ.
Seven Rush County students achieved the Distinguished Rating at Purdue University for the first semester. Recipients include Paul E. Jack Jackson and Maxine E. Wagoner, plus Richard E. Colter Cedric W. Kuhn Maurice B. Lessing James F. South erland and Robert L. Spuller across Carthage Manilla Milroy Rushville.
Next Thursday, April 5, 1956, is the registration deadline for the May 8 primary. If you have moved or changed precincts you must re register. Register with precinct committeemen or at the local auto license branch with Mrs Anice Bly. The bureau will be closed Friday March 30 Good Friday.
Vance Waggoner, Indiana state representative for Henry and Rush counties, spoke to the Lions Club Monday night at the Lions Den Community Center. The club approved a Talent Show at the Center for Saturday night April 21 with a Smorgasbord preceding it, both on a 50 50 sponsorship basis.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Herktess attended the funeral Monday in Elwood Indiana for Mrs Homer Eschelman wife of the former minister at the East Street Christian church.
The Purdue University Choir presented an Easter cantata on Palm Sunday at Broadway Methodist Church in Indianapolis. Attending were John A. Ruby and family members Harold Ruby, David, Clyde E. Ruby and daughters along with Mr. and Mrs. Ruby.
Henry Gahimer, 89, longtime Arlington resident, died Tuesday night at Rushville Nursing Home. Born September 22, 1867 in Shelby County, he was a Christian Union church member in Blue Ridge. He leaves two sons Orville and Curtis, four grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren. Funeral services set for Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Carmony Funeral Home in Shelbyville.
The 4H Ripley Needletwisters met March 21 1956 at 7 00 in the Home Ec room. Marilyn Pitts presided Sheryl Mo sier read the minutes Kay Patterson and Kathy Ruby led pledges Judy Harrold conducted group singing Linda Harrold reported on walking riding a bicycle and driving Sue Mosier served as vice president Mrs Clayton distributed year ahead record books and Marilyn Lessure taught record book filling Special numbers were led by Shirley Smith Wanda Leisure Marcia Leisure Donna McCorkle Marilyn Buckley Janet Heim and Nancy Copple Recreation was led by Sue Lei sure refreshments by Marilyn Pope and Kay Patterson Patty Tribby was named news reporter.
Herman Robbins of Charlottes ville in Ripley township has been named Indiana representative to the third annual Young Outdoor America’s Conference at Sioux City Iowa from April 18 to 20. The event is sponsored by the Izaak Walton League of America and includes 4H Club members and other youth groups. Herman earned the spot for his outstanding work in soil wildlife water forestry conservation and will have all expenses covered. He recently also received the National Soil Conservation Award with a trip to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago and a $300 scholarship.
All 4 H Dairy Senior calves must be enrolled on advanced enrollment cards in the extension office by April 1. Clubs failing to enroll Senior Calves will not be eligible to show at the State Fair in 1956. Members already enrolled do not need a new card unless Senior Calves were born since January.
