Mr and Mrs Douglas Cooper hosted ten tables of bridge at Mrs Ella J Coffins home Monday night with dainty refreshments. Mr and Mrs Bayard Baker entertained eight tables of bridge on South Main Friday night for guests Mr and Mrs Arthur George of Pendleton. The Quaker Class at Friends Church held a miscellaneous shower for Mr and Mrs Willard Cox of Newcastle at Mrs Coxs parents home Earl and Mrs Addison. Guests enjoyed a large pitch in supper and many games. Roy Mattix 66 died Sunday after paralysis struck his home Thursday. Born near Charlottesville November 21 1868 he worked in several Carthage businesses before starting a home harness and shoe shop. Survived by wife Elva Anderson two daughters Cordellia and Mrs Martin Delaney a son William brother Rowland Mattix and two grandchildren Funeral held at his residence Tuesday led by Rev N I Schoolfield with local singers Maude Porter and H T Beher. burial in Town Cemetery Attendees from out of town included Rowland Mattix Clyde Davis and families Virgie Mattix Stanley Barnes Indianapolis and others.

Rufus Benton Winslow 23 of Carthage area died after a ten week illness at his home. Born June 2, 1911 in Rush County he was a Walnut Ridge church member and Westland H. & S. graduate. Saving Bonds On Sale At Local Post Office
Post master Pearle Coffin reports the office has sold five of the new U S Saving Bonds at 1000 dollar value, two of 500 dollars and one 50 dollar bond, with five more of the 100 dollar issue ordered. Bonds over 100 dollars must be ordered. 25 and 50 and 100 dollar bonds are available. Maturity is ten years with 27 percent interest. A 25 dollar bond costs 18 75, a 50 dollar bond 37 50, and a 100 dollar bond 75 00.
Annual Fourth Indiana District Band Contest at Southport High
The Fourth Indiana District band contest will be held April 5 and 6 at the Southport High School gym in Marion county. About fifteen counties and hundreds of students compete. Solos and ensembles Friday night. marching and concerts on Southport field. Last year Charlottesville Knightstown Rushville Stelleyville participated.

Churches to Send Youths to County Conference
County churches plan delegations of their young people to the County Youth Conference set for March 30 in our area. Attendance is expected to exceed previous years with the theme Living For Jesus and a theme song. The program includes registration from 8:30 to 9:00, get acquainted and sing, devotional, class periods for youth and adults, a morning address, lunch, afternoon devotional, more class periods, and a one minute talk by all attendees about what service camp means to them.

Auto Crash Near Cleveland Hospitalized Youth Loses Eye
Carroll Stevens 23 of Mays, son of Mr and Mrs Fred Stevens, and Delbert Ingle were in a collision on the National road one mile west of Cleveland Monday night. Stevens, taken to Methodist Hospital Indianapolis, lost his left eye and suffered knee and other injuries after a westbound car owned by Joe Kullum from Indianapolis struck their car after a truck passed. Ingle escaped serious injury and returned home. Both vehicles were badly damaged.

Life Sentenced Man Habitual Criminal Chester Taylor
Chester Chuck Taylor aged 36 received a life sentence at Indiana State Prison from Special Judge Robert Reeves after a jury verdict of habitual criminal. Taylor offered no comment as he was returned to jail handcuffed between Sheriff Clarence Watson and Deputy Sheriff Ruschhaupt following the sentencing in Hancock County authorities last week.

Rushville fireman Omar Gwinnup aged 48 shot his wife Rosa aged 47 three times at their home on West Third Street last Friday night around eight. He then killed himself. Witnesses Olive Gwinnup and Lynn Haydon were in an adjoining room.
