Marine Private McMahan Completes Camp Pendleton Training

Marine Private Edward A. McMahan son of Mr and Mrs Kinley McMahan of Carthage Indiana completed four weeks of individual combat training February 21 at the Second Infantry Training Regiment Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton California. Training focused on tactical and combat skills emphasizing small unit tactics including the four man fire team and the 13 man squad.

Ripley Township Farm Bureau Hosts Fish Fry Meeting

The Ripley Township Farm Bureau held a March 16 fish fry at the Community Center. Carthage Lions Club prepared the fish and REMC manager Forkner showed a 20 minute color film on electricity narrated by Chet Huntley. Sixty members attended including Mr and Mrs Howard Linville and Mr Alton Gordon. Mrs Linville leads the county Women’s Leaders and spoke on February Farm Bureau conference at Murat Temple. President Kenneth Land adjourned the meeting.

Miss Sarah Hill Buried Monday

Miss Sarah Hill 94 native of Rush County died Saturday at Boxwood Nursing Home New Castle where she had lived. Born May 11 1869 she was the oldest living graduate of Carthage High School class of 1888 and taught music in youth. She belonged to Friends Church Knightstown with funeral Monday at 1 30 p m Butcher Funeral Home Knightstown and burial Walnut Ridge Cemetery.

Elderly driver injured in crash on U.S. 40 near Charlottesville

William H. Nelson, 71, of Carthage, was injured when his 1953 Chevrolet southbound on U.S. 40 pulled in front of a lumber truck in Charlottesville. Nelson and James Stalling, 29, of Wilson, N.C., were examined at Memorial Hospital with possible internal injuries, ribs fractured and lacerations. Nelson to be cited for failure to grant right of way. his car totaled.

Heart attack fatal during Semi-State tourney at Butler Fieldhouse

Wal ker Elliott 48 of Rushville died Saturday afternoon at the Butler Fieldhouse during a Columbus Howe game. Elliott, plant manager for Norris Fertilizer Co., was stricken at 12 45 p.m. He was rushed to a first aid room but could not be revived. He was born March 22 1915 and survived by his widow Dorothy, a daughter Manya Gail, his mother Carrie Elliott, four brothers Ray Gus William Frank and two sisters Elizabeth Williamson and Mary Frances Gatewood.

Three Rush County students on Little 500 committees

Indiana University hosting the Little 500 festival May 8-9 with a 50 mile four man bike race plus Mini tricycle, Golf Jamboree, and Bob Hope shows. The proposed sanitary sewer system for New Palestine failed after only about 60 of ~300 residents signed up. Property owners would have paid $100 and at least $5.90 monthly. funding via a federal grant and bonds will not be used, per town attorney Glenn T. Williams.

Hollis Ewing Dies Suddenl y in New Castle

Hollis Ewing 64 a former Carthage resident and Rush County native died suddenly at his New Castle home Tuesday morning. He farmed most of his life in the Carthage area and later worked at the State Hospital in New Castle. Hedrick Resigns Arlington High to Lead Vermillion District

Donald E. Hedrick, Arlington High School principal for three years, resigns to become head principal at North Vermillion High School in Vermillion County. The new consolidated school, formed from Cayuga Perrysville and Newport, opens this fall with about 400 students. Hedrick will assist in summer planning and budgeting operations for the move. Charles Morris will head the North Vermillion district, formerly Carthage High School principal.
