A March Indianapolis scene recalls a corner drug store where customers wait as a malt mixer stalls for Major Bowes radio ads. The owner prioritizes commercial timing over service, sparking amusement about modern business and media dependence.
A district meeting of the Odd Fellows lodge District No. 30 will be held in Arlington on Saturday March 21. Delegations are expected from Rush Shelby and Decatur counties with grand officers present. The afternoon session confers the First and Second Degrees by Beech Grove lodge 399 Arlington and the Schad Degree by Puritan lodge Indianapolis on eight candidates. A supper is planned at six o clock served by the Arlington Christian church ladies aid society.
Officers elected at a March 12 meeting in the courthouse include Leanore Myers as president Roy Reddick as vice president and Naomi Whitton as secretary. Committees appointed will craft a year program and a tentative plan will be shown at the April meeting with the group name to be decided at the April 9 session.
The eighth annual Business Women's Week opened with sixty thousand women from 1,490 clubs across the United States including Alaska and Hawaii. The Rushville Business and Professional Women's Club hosted the Public Relations dinner with Kiwanis and Rotary guests. Mrs Franklin D Roosevelt and Miss Charl Ormond Williams spoke from the White House for the week.
Carthage will not enter the county oratorical contest on March 24 at Manilla due to no participating students. Schools entering include New Salem, Manilla, Gings, Arlington, Glenwood, Raleigh, Mays and Morton Memorial. Milroy does not participate. Virgil Mullins will judge. The Rushville Legion plaque goes to the county champion, currently held by Morton Memorial. Medals will be awarded to the top three individuals.
A freak lamb born on Leroy Catt’s farm north of Arlington had a turkeylike head with one central eye, a piglike back, and a throat stomach. It was a twin and died after birth. the other lamb survived. The carcass was given to Arlington high school agricultural class for experiments.
A playful line recalls Wil lie buying two dozen of something and placing them on pens in the post office. The anecdote presents a quirky, public-spirited moment from 1938 with a humorous tone.
A March wedding was held at the DeSchipper home in Carthage as Ellen DeShipper became the bride of William Robert Porter of Schenectady New York son of Mae Porter of Logansport. Rev Geo Holwager officiated with musician参与. They will reside at 802 Eastern Avenue Schenectady.
Carthage High School will hold commencement on April 30 with Rev. O Herschel Folger of Indianapolis as speaker. County superintendent John E Goode announced dates for other township highs. speakers and graduate counts were not confirmed in every case.
Carthage High School could host a university study center for graduates who cannot afford college. The cooperative project is announced by the Indiana University Extension Division and the National Youth Administration, with Prof. R. E. Cavanaugh and Winston Riley Jr. leading the effort.
Mr and Mrs Clarence R Weaver and daughter Helen of Indianapolis were en route to see their son Ben in Ann Arbor when ice on the road caused a serious crash near Fort Wayne. Both adults were seriously hurt and taken to St Joseph Hospital Fort Wayne. Helen sustained bruises. Mrs Weaver is a Johnson of Indianapolis and formerly of Carthage and a close friend of Mrs Lineback.
The Rushville township farm bureau held a regular meeting at the Webb school building. Chairman Frank Warrick presided as Mrs. Frank Warrick reported on the state social and editorial conference. W A Alexander spoke about his trip to Cuba and E F Brown led a seed corn discussion. Arthur Widener discussed the hatchery project and Wanda Newhouse led songs.
Mr Sands chief engineer at Container Corporation and Mr Ralph Henderson were burned when a steel rule used to measure in the power plant short circuited 411 volt wires. Sands sustained severe burns to the palm and back of the hand while Henderson suffered blistered eyes and temporary vision loss. Both were treated by Dr. McNabb and returned home after treatment. they expect to resume work when permitted.
Luncheon at the Louie hotel brought together adult leaders of county girls 4 H clubs. Plans for Achievement days were made. Already 212 girls signed for club work with 100 more expected as townships are contacted. Attendees included Mrs. Ernest Berninger and others from Ripley Center Posey Noble Walker and Washington areas.
Mr. Lowell Hutchinson grimaced Tuesday after attempting to crack a rock through a corn sheller during shelling part of eight thousand bushels sold by Frank Offutt near Arlington to the government. The sale fetched $20,000 and seeds were to be shipped to Iowa. Sheller repair parts had to be sent from Decatur Illinois, at an estimated cost of about $75.
Nationwide American Legion posts observed the 17th anniversary on March 17 while the Rushville post held its 16th with a party in Legion rooms. At 10:30 p m a broadcast by the national commander and a Legion drama by professional talent were presented, interrupting activities briefly.
The Firemen's and Policemen's Ball at the Auditorium Theatre drew a healthy attendance last Friday night with about seventy five couples dancing to Cedric Carwein's Arlington orchestra. The event was enjoyed by all attendees.
Carthage led county attendance for February per county attendance officer Margery Anderson. The report shows 3 630 days absent 3 442 days excused and 145 tardiness cases. Carthage attendance 95.55 with other schools listed from Glenwood 95.42 to Webb 86.10.
Rushville Merchants' association will sponsor an unusual sales event on the third Thursday of each month starting at 9. Each member will offer one special bargain for that day only, announced in a joint Rushville newspapers advertisement. New board members include Clifford Stevens and E J Knecht.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday at Dunn Funeral home for Iris Elaine Green age 3 daughter of Mr and Mrs Albert Green of Chicago. She died Friday night at her grandparents home near Carthage after a two day illness. She is survived by a sister Diana and by her parents and grandparents. The Rev George Holwager led the services and interment was in Blue River cemetery.
Republican Howard Stech, longtime Rush county resident and engineer, announces his candidacy for county auditor. He graduated from Rushville High School in 1912 and earned a B S in Metallurgical Engineering from New Mexico State School of Mines in 1920. He is a licensed professional engineer in Indiana and is running for office for the first time.
Miss Fern Jordan deputy county auditor reports 2897.06 dollars in outstanding dog fund claims from stock losses while only 193.68 dollars were paid. Fire broke out in the attic of Miss Eva Johnson’s house Friday afternoon about two o clock likely from defective wiring. Furniture was moved to the yard, weatherboarding stripped around the home, and about $200 in damage was insured. Firemen praised for effective extinguishing.
James H. Souder, 81, prominent Hancock County resident, died at 7:30 AM from a heart attack at his Greenfield home 109 West Osage. He lived in Greenfield after moving from Rush County, farmed and raised stock, and later helped operate a new West Main building. Survived by widow and four children Ross Souder, Forrest Souder, Court Souder, Mrs. John Jessup, eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Funeral at home Friday 2 PM, conducted by Rev. Geo Holwager, with Park Cemetery burial. He and his wife had long belonged to East St. Christian church. born in Rush County near Hannagan.
The closing service of United School of World Friendship features a lantern slide lecture on India by Rev. William B. Collier at 8:00 p.m. in the Christian church, following 7:15 p.m. class sessions. Visitation welcome. prior Monday talk by Rev. Spratt showcased Palestine curios and inspiring notes.
County commissioners awarded bids from J. D. Adams company Indianapolis for an industrial tractor and two blade road maintainers. Total price 2,638.50 with a 2 percent cash discount on the 775 maintainer purchase. Delivery is to be made at once.
A concert at Friends church Tuesday night featured Celestine Herrod Heathcock, mezzo soprano, and Edward Clayton Lewis, pianist, sponsored by the Choral club. About one hundred attendees enjoyed piano numbers and solos by well known composers with Mrs. A. J. Carr at the piano. Carthage residents are praised for the opportunity to hear these artists.
Clyde Gordon reports sixty Texas sheep stolen from his farm north east of Rushville within the last ten days. Deputy Paul Bennington notes the loss as a cattle theft case and investigates the site and possible suspects.
Mr and Mrs Charles Nordlow of near Spiceland were dinner guests of Mr and Mrs Jeff Leisueur on Monday.
