Miss Betty Jane Spilman of Anderson township 4-H club received a $100 Purdue University scholarship awarded by Ballers of Muncie for the best Indiana 4-H club girl achievement in 1935. She finished second in the event as the first place winner could not accept the award. Spilman is a senior at Survey High School and plans to enter Paraneums fall.
Walter Peters of Rushville township was appointed by the county board of commissioners to fill the vacancy created by the death of John P. Stech. Peters will begin duties after receiving his commission from Governor McNutt.
George H. Whiteman eight year old son of Chester and Mrs Whiteman died at home in Orange township Monday night from complications of Scarlet fever. Private funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon and burial followed in Milroy Cemetery.
George B Moore announces candidacy for Clerk of the Rush county circuit court in the Republican primary. A former farmer and school teacher, he previously served as clerk from 1916 to 1919 and was praised by the State Board of Accounts for accurate records. He spent fifteen years with Reynolds Manufacturing as bookkeeper, superintendent and assistant manager in Rushville Indiana.
The Tri County Association of Pocahontas Councils and the Improved Order of Red Men hosted a Friday meeting in Rushville with Mahoning Council No. 36 and visitors from several counties. The session began at 7 30 PM, included business, degree work, dancing and refreshments.
Funeral services were held Monday at two o'clock for Ertle L. Harcourt at his Milroy area home. The Milroy Christian Church pastor Rev S V Mattson officiated. Harcourt died Saturday after a year of declining health and three weeks of serious illness. Survived by widow, one son Lewis Ertle Harcourt, his father Lewis E Harcourt of Milroy, and three brothers Faude E Harcourt Orris Towh ahd Calla eeu and Clife ee ee.
The Choral Club announces its first sponsored concert featuring Celestine Herrod Heathcock mezzo soprano Edward Clayton Lewis pianist and Mrs Heathcock’s training background. The March 17 event at the Friends church aims to raise funds for the annual guest program with 15 and 25 cent admission.
Mr and Mrs John DeSchipper announce the engagement of their daughter Ellen to William Robert Porter of Schenectady New York son of Mae Porter Logansport The marriage will be at the brides home on March 13 Ellen recently a junior at Indiana University and a Kappa Alpha Theta member Porter graduated from Indiana University in 1935 with highest distinction and held multiple leadership roles including senior class president ROTC cadet colonel and Beta Gamma Sigma member.
Three Farm Bureau gatherings occurred this week across Rush County. In Jackson township on Tuesday at the school, Mrs. Tracy Cross spoke on Electricity and its Uses. Orange township followed on Wednesday at the Moscow church with George Sites on Farm Bureau Refunds. Union township met Wednesday at Gings school where Mrs. Ernest Whicker reported on the state Social Education convention and Miss Marianne Holman provided music, plus a Farmer's Guide entertainment by Hiram Hayseed.
The Friends and Methodist churches of Charlottesville announce a union revival meeting at the Methodist church starting Thursday March 12. Evangelist Rev. Frank Cottingham will lead the event.
The first night of the United Winter Night School of World Friendship will be held Thursday March five at Fletcher M E church with a pot luck supper. Registration follows and Assembly led by Geo H Holwager with Errol T Elliott of Richmond as speaker. Four additional meetings are scheduled: March nine at Friends church, March twelve at Christian church, March sixteen at Wesleyan Methodist church, and March nineteen at Christian church. Two subjects taught each period: India the Land of Religious Hunger by Wm B Collier and The Church and Its Backdoor Neighbors by J R Furbay.
The eleventh annual Rush County Youth conference will meet in Manilla churches on Friday and Saturday March 20 and 21. Sponsored by the County Council of Religious Education, the gathering is open to young people from all Protestant churches with delegates urged from each church. An announced program will feature speakers and event details to follow.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday for Mrs Martha Inlow who died Sunday at her Rushville area home. Rev C S Stephenson led the rites. A life long Rush County resident she belonged to Homer Christian Union Church. Survivors include her son Charles Inlow and daughter Mrs Elizabeth Haywood of Henderson.
A modern mausoleum at East Hill Cemetery in Rushville is open for public inspection through March 10. Built of Bedford stone, the building sits in the southeast section and features interior corridors flanked by crypts, most of which are reserved by Rush County residents.
Dallas Hardwick, Rush County sheriff, and Loren Winkler, county surveyor, said they will run again in the Republican primary in May for two year terms. They note typical lack of opposition in such two year office races.
Contractors drilling for new water works have bored five holes then returned to the fourth to continue a twelve inch well project guiding the effort as they lay pipe for the system.
January attendance across Ripley County schools shows Glenwood leading with 96.72 and Carthage High at 92.25. Extreme cold and illnesses including flu mumps and scarlet fever reduced overall attendance. Other schools listed include Homer St Marys Jackson Arlington Manilla Raleigh New Salem Webb Richland Milroy and Gings with various percentages.

James Henley of Carthage won first in the freshman division of Rush county Latin contest held in Rushville last Saturday. Mary Duffey of Rushville took 42 in the second year division. Lorene Crouch of Manilla and Hilda Beall of Rushville were second and third in the second division. Prizes were one dollar for first and sixty cents for second. Henley and Duffey will represent Rush county at the district contest April 4 in Greensburg.
The Town Board met in regular session Tuesday night, postponing the meeting from Monday due to member absences. The usual line of business was transacted.
Funeral services were held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Bentonville Christian Church for W. B. Overhiser age 94 who died at his daughter’s home north of Bentonville last Thursday. He served four years and five months as a volunteer in the Civil War and is survived by his daughter Mrs. Odus Irwin and two sons Corwin Overhiser and Emory Overhiser.
Rushville city council purchased a new police car for the Rushville department. The bullet-proof windshield and porthole aid safety with a gun rack to be installed. Chief Russell Glendenning announced the vehicle, bought from Linville Motor Sales, last week.
Rushville resident Howard Stech announces his candidacy for Rush County auditor in the Republican primary. He is the son of the late John P. Stech a longtime Rushville justice of the peace and has not held public office before. He is widely known in and around Rushville.
The Ripley township farm bureau will meet Monday at 7:30 PM in the school building for their March meeting. Members and neighbors are invited to discuss farm problems and hear an explanation of the soil conservation program along with planned entertainment.
