Price Named Rush County Highway Foreman

Lowell Price of near Carthage began duties as Rush County foreman for the State Highway Department. Ray Howe announced the appointment, replacing Carl Foust who moved to the Greenfield state highway garage. Price has prior experience with the Rush County road department and has been working in heavy equipment for the state in this sub-district.

Manilla Wins Forestry Judging Contest

Doug Norris and Roger O'Brien of Manilla High School won the Rush County Forestry Judging Contest with 680 of 800 points. The Carthage High School team took second, while Glen Smith of Carthage was named first district alternates. The top two teams advance to the district contest on April 19 at Winchester. Other competitors included Roger Miller and Mark Kuhn of Manilla, Carl Robbins and Mike Chandler of Carthage.

Ripley 4H Winners Named For County Demonstration

Eight Carthage High School students from Ripley Township competed in Rush County forestry and entomology judging at the County Extension Office. The eight entrants qualified for district competition in Winchester. winners included Marvin Heim Ronald Fannin in crops, Beth Roberts in forestry, Tom Tucker in electric, Bob Cooper and Mike Heim in farm safety, Glen Smith and Lea Foust in general. Larry Fenner and Marvin Heim took forestry second, with Fenner unable to judge district forestry due to entomology first place. First alternates Glen Smith attends. Larry Fenner Carl Robbins and Beth Roberts won entomology first and earned an engraved trophy from the agricultural department.
