Washington Was One of Country's Richest Men
The passage notes George Washington earned little wealth himself, mainly through inherited estates. His great grandfather expanded land holdings, his parents opened land on the Rappahannock, and by his birth the family owned much of the peninsula between the Potomac and Rappahannock. Mount Vernon passed to him in 1752 after Law rence's death. Martha Washington brought additional lands, and Washington held about 70,000 acres in Virginia plus 40,000 in the West after the Revolution, making him among the wealthiest Americans.
