The Carthage Lions Club met at the Community Center for their weekly dinner meeting with fifteen members and one guest, Coach Norman McCloskey giving the evenings talk after regular business.
Harrold and Pell Motor Sales filed a 2700 dollar damage suit in Rush Circuit Court seeking 2500 for building damage and 200 for two stored vehicles after the February 25 1961 snowstorm. Three divorce petitions were also filed: Doris E Richey against Alfred D Richey Alma Hughes against Ronald Hughes and Sharon Henderson against Raymond Henderson.
The Chi-Rho LH S group and C Y F met Monday evening at East Street Christian Church. C Y F opened with Judy Marsh leading songs while Sally Bush played piano. I H S had 3 members and 70 cents collection. Chi Rho had 5 with one teacher Mrs Norma McKain and 30 cents. C Y F had 4 with 45 cents. The two groups met together with Jane Grizzell delivering the lesson. Everyone is welcome.
Six Rush County high schools will participate in the sixth annual Band Festival on March 9 in Memorial Gymnasium Rushville Indiana. Participants include New Salem Milroy Mays Manilla Carthage and Arlington high schools with directors conducting the program.
Harry Linville and Jerry Delay completed an eight week agricultural short course at Purdue University and returned home Friday. Their guardians and Sue Leisure attended a dinner dance at Purdue Union Building last Thursday night and accompanied them home on Friday.
Congressman Ralph Harvey of Indiana announces his candidacy for re election in November subject to the May primary. He has represented ten East Central Indiana counties since 1947 to fill the late Raymond Springer term and cites broad district support and opposition to centralized federal power. He notes nonconsecutive service due to missing the 86th Congress and vows to continue serving the Tenth District to the best of his ability.
The 4 H club met February 26 in the home ec room with singing led by Judy Fannin. Members were honored for birthdays including Beegie Gatewood and Kathy Smith. The group recited pledges, sampled corn bread, and discussed safety acts. A new 4 H members initiation included paint for Sharon Smith and Kathy Smith. Carthage Junior class tournament is set for March 2 at 6:00 with finals between class winners. The National Honor Society met February 28, approved pins and diplomas, and planned black hoodies with NHS emblems. A local rumor column teased campus life with mischief and jokes. Raiders’ season record stood 14-10, advancing county tourney and finishing semi finals at 59-53 to Morris town. Returning lettermen include Gatewood, Howard, Weidner, and Jordan. several seniors and cheerleaders graduate. Cafeteria menus listed with daily offerings.
The Carthage Legion Auxiliary hosts a meeting at the Community Center on Monday March 5 with Mrs. Lewis Henderson and Mrs. Sam Nigh serving as hostesses.
Seven candidates filed declarations of candidacy with Dallas Hardwick at the county clerk's office marking the start of filing for the upcoming primary and general elections. filings include H Max Safewright for sheriff and Isabelle Dill for county recorder among Republicans, with additional Democrats and Republicans filing for county council precincts and advisory boards.
One semester 1961 record lists 871 Pur due students receiving Distinguished Rating. Among them 129 hit the top scholastic index of 6. Amy Sue Addison leads as a 6 index freshman in home economics with several seniors also earning 5 to 5.9 indexes from Rush County and nearby towns.
Mr and Mrs Hugh Weber recently returned from a two week vacation to Sarasota and St Petersburg Florida They visited Bob Murnan of Largo and Mrs Marcia Whetsel of Bradenton during their stay
Forty nine Rush County Beef Cattle breeders and 4H members nominated 210 calves for the Gold Medal Calf Club. The breakdown includes 102 Angus 61 Shorthorn and 47 Hereford with 28 bulls 84 heifers and 98 steers. Calves born in 1961 will be weighed in July and eligible shows run August 2 3 in Rushville with state shows possible. Nominations for 1962 calves due May 1.
Hubert R. Alexander of Rushville filed on the first day with the secretary of state his candidacy for the Republican nomination for joint representative in the Indiana Legislature from Rush and Henry counties. He argues for fair reapportionment, opposes tax hikes, and cites his past public service including Rush County Auditor and state director of the Farmers Home Administration.
Marine Pvt. Darrel D. Davis of Carthage Indiana completed four weeks of advanced combat training with the First Infantry Training Regiment at Camp Lejeune North Carolina on January 31. Training covered small unit tactics and live weapon firing under simulated combat conditions.
Morristown Yellow Jackets repeat as Rushville sectional champions by beating Arlington 59-51. They advanced with a 59-53 win over Carthage. Arlington topped Rushville 60-54 to reach the final. Morristown led 23-11 after the first quarter and held a commanding start.
The new Frigidaire Rapid Dry cleaner at Kwik Wash Laundry, owned by Mr. Hubert Hunt, will be ready in about ten days with service starting today. A typical eight pound load costs $2.00 and clothes are cleaned in twenty four minutes, delivered on hangers in plastic bags with an attendant on duty.
Robert E. White of Ripley Township was re elected chairman of the Rush County Extension Executive Committee at a Monday meeting in the County Extension Office. Clarence Dyer was re elected vice chairman and Mrs. Howard Linville secretary.
March 1 marks the start of filing for mortgage tax exemptions at the county auditor. Veterans and seniors 65 and older may apply March 1 to May 7 with new limits and residency requirements. Eligible individuals must live in Indiana, own the property at least one year, and have annual gross income of 2250 dollars or less.
The World Day of Prayer will be observed in a union service at Carthage Wesleyan Methodist Church on Friday March 9 at 2 p.m. Sponsored by Carthage Churches, the event invites the public to attend.
Mr and Mrs Wilbur McCorkle and granddaughters Deborah Kay and Diana Sue McCorkle of Greenfield spent Sunday visiting Mr and Mrs Fred Donoho in Indianapolis.
Carthage loses to Morristown 59 to 57 in the sectional semifinal after holding a brief late edge. The Raiders advanced by defeating Manilla 59-58 and Milroy 59-57, but could not withstand Morristown’s defense in the final minute. Jordan scored 18 for Carthage while Nugent led Morristown with 14 points and Hauk added 12.
In a series of sectional basketball matchups Carthage defeated Manilla 59 58 Milroy 53 edged Mays 51 Rushville 63 downed Charlottesville 50 Arlington 58 beat Morton 47 Morristown 86 over New Salem 68 Carthage 59 defeated Milroy 57 Arlington 60 beat Rushville 54 Morristown 59 edged Carthage 53 Morristown 59 beat Arlington 51 in the final tally.
