The Carthage Lions Club held its last meeting until September with a dinner for wives and families at the Community Center. Forty two guests attended and Judge Walter Myers of Indianapolis spoke after the dinner. Hugo Gale of Cumberland installed the new officers.

The Carthage Camera Club met last Wednesday at the Community Center for a guest night and cooperative supper. President Mrs. Howard Henley presided over a short business meeting as Mr. Frank Guyatt presented pictures from Brussels World Fair and scenes from Czechoslovakia Poland and Berlin to a large, engaged crowd.
Mr. and Mrs. Louis Humes of Carthage and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Phieffer of Elmhurst Illinois returned Friday from a trip and visit with Mr. and Mrs. Marbel Edwards at Athens Alabama. Mrs. Edwards accompanied them to Carthage for a two week stay on business and to visit relatives.
Born last Friday a boy to Mr and Mrs Kenneth Whitfield of Knightstown residing near Rushville at Rush Memorial hospital. Grandson of Mr and Mrs Henry Whitfield of Carthage. Also born Wednesday a girl to Mr and Mrs Joseph Kline.
Mike Ruby and Bill Parish enlisted Monday at New Castle for service in the U S Army. Dudley Leisure signed up for four years in the U S Marines and will begin basic training in San Diego California.
Odell Pitts attended a district Photographer's Convention on Wednesday at the Claypool Hotel in Indianapolis.
Walnut Ridge Friends Church announces a Bible School session starting Monday June 29 for one week from 9 to 11 30 a m daily. The program runs each weekday and invites area families to attend.
The Methodist Youth Fellowship held a 7:30 p m meeting led by Sue Siler with an introduction to Rev Mayfield. Stan Lynch gave the lesson as committees reported progress and the group closed with an M Y F benediction and refreshments.
Mr and Mrs George Webster of Santa Ana California are spending the summer with her parents Mr and Mrs James McGeorge. Mr and Mrs Herbert Watking also of Santa Ana are two weeks vacationing with her parents and visiting his parents in Middletown. Mrs Charles McGeorge and daughter and grandson and Mrs Ruth Oakley and four children of Hot Springs South Dakota were house guests last Wednesday and Thursday in the McGeorge home.
Lt. Commander Lee Patton of the U.S. Naval Reserve will return to Carthage on Saturday after two weeks of training duty at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Chicago Illinois.
Mrs Nelle Walker of Knights Town was a guest on Tuesday of Mrs Nelle Newby. The meeting highlighted local social ties and cordial hospitality within the Knights Town community.
Indiana State Fair Band entrants rush in as postmark order decides marching start at 7 30 a m on September 3. Education Teachers Day marks the schedule with a one mile parade in front of the grandstand. The top ten bands share 1000 dollars. trophies and plaques awarded by instrument makers. Entries must be postmarked before midnight July 1.
Purdue University animal scientists George Thrasher and Dick Hollandbeck warn heat waves kill unprotected hogs. They advise 200 pound hogs need about eight square feet of shade, sows and boars 12 to 15, and confinement setups may require more shade or corn crib use to extend shade over feeding floors.
Purdue University agricultural economists analyze 105 Hoosier hog farms for 1955 to 1957 to estimate income under then price structures. Average farm price of hogs 16.05 per cwt and corn 1.22 per bushel. Net cash income averaged 7500, with farms about 246 acres and 90000 investment per farm.
Miss Melanie Addison daughter of Mr and Mrs Hoyt Addison attends Girls State this week at Indiana University Bloomington sponsored by the Carthage American Legion Auxiliary.
Entertains Mrs. Gertrude Woolridge of Greenfield as guest of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Earnest Friday and Saturday. Other dinner guests Saturday include Mr. and Mrs. Tom Staley of Vincennes and Mr. and Mrs. Logan Nelson of Carthage with Mr. and Mrs. William Nelson and children near Arlington. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Binford of Peru were house guests Saturday and Sunday.
House guests of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Graff and daughter from Thursday until Monday were Mrs. Graff's brother Forrest Copher and Mrs. Copher and Miss Karen Ann Bennett all of St. Louis Missouri and Miss Marlene Graff of Indianapolis.
A bridal shower was given Sunday afternoon for Miss Claudia Haines at the home of Mrs. Rosemary Waldron in Oaklandon Indiana. Attending from the vicinity were Mesdames Carl Edwards Norman Edwards Jerry Edwards Carl Carson Jr Fletcher Edwards and Mrs Gene Leisure of Charlottesville. Miss Haines is a niece of Fletcher Edwards.
Mr and Mrs Floyd Reddick hosted a Sunday gathering for Father's Day and anniversary celebrations for Roy Reddick plus Lucille Reeves birthday anniversary. Guests included Maurice Wilson and family from Richmond Ralph Stevens and family from Indianapolis Roy Reddick and daughters Lucille Reeves Laura Reddick Phillip Satter and Lowell Geise with son.
Mr and Mrs Loyal Hunt spent the first week of last month visiting the Smoky Mountains and relatives in Dayton Ohio. Mark Hawkins of Muncie joined them midweek and left Sunday with his parents Mrs Ruby Miller and his sisters who are Dayton Ohio guests this week.
Dinner hosted by Mr and Mrs A J Carr near Knightstown honored J E Carr and Mrs Carr newly married in New York on June 14. Guests included James Carr family from Chicago H W Jones Lt and Mrs Jones from San Diego G H Jones from New Castle Robin Jones family Connersville A C Hiatt Indianapolis Claude Sipe Knightstown and others from Carthage and Gouldie Kyser Sharlie Kyser Hattie Innis Ada Chappell.
The marriage date of Miss Jane Ann Brooks and Martin Koons Edwards is announced by the bride’s mother Mrs. Carlos Brooks of Mays. Edwards is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm M. Edwards of New Castle. The Center Christian Church near Mays will host the wedding on September 6, 1959.
The Carthage Merchants rout Arlington 14 3 to remain in first place as they scored in every inning of a five inning game. Nine hits paced Carthage with Ed wards B McCorkle F Magee and B Magee collecting four each. Battery notes list Stewart R Magee for Carthage and Lewman Rucker Cooley for Arlington.
Carthage fifth and sixth graders beat Greenfield Boys Club 3 to 2 with Floyd Stewart allowing 5 hits and no earned runs and Kit Porter delivering the decisive two-run double in the fifth. Morristown handed Carthage its first loss 16 to 4 as Carthage managed one hit. Morristown Junior High then defeated Carthage 9 to 3 despite Carthage totaling four hits.
Ripley Needletwisters 4H Club met June 18 1959 in the Home Ec Room. 27 members attended as Judy Harrold presided. Pam Hunt led pledges and Cathy Ruby led singing. Demonstrations covered fancy sandwiches cherry pie and Miracle Whip cake. Guests Mrs Jean Cox and Mrs Loren Munden attended.
Miss Evelyn Luttrell of Amo Indiana was an overnight guest on Monday of Miss Donna McCorkle.
Conservation officers investigate a poison pollution flowing from near Mays downstream toward Arlington. First reports came Monday night via Officer Glen Conner who warns farmers to watch livestock and call if illness or death occurs. Water samples sent to the State Board of Health with results expected soon. A fish count tracks dead fish from Mays downstream, including a 7.5 pound largemouth bass.
Mrs C F Thompson of Knights Town was a guest Tuesday of Mrs Russell Roland.
Howard Addison recounts a one week Farm Bureau Coop tour visiting Windfall waterer and feeder makers, Elwood Farm Implement, and Indianapolis facilities. He notes research behind equipment design, candidate cooperative ventures, and farm market services for Indiana’s 150000 farmers. Public events include Rush County Fair July 27 31 and upcoming 4 H tours and lamb pool on July 8 from 5 to 8 PM.
