The Donoho home on the east side of the "V" was destroyed by a Monday morning fire sparked by a flue. Neighbors' homes and Mrs. Ria Gray’s residence were threatened but saved. Much furniture burned after removal to the yard. the insured value was $700, insufficient for full loss. Fire crews from the Container plant and Carthage prevented further damage.
Last Sunday evening the outdoor service at the Friends church drew a large crowd despite heat. Rev. George Holwager spoke on Unity among the Churches, and next Sunday will feature Rev. Wm. B. The Broad Ripple Post No. 312 American Legion cancelled its event at the Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors' Children’s Home in Knightstown last Sunday due to heat. Members planned a lawn dinner at noon and a tour of the home.
Jesse Henley had a narrow escape Wednesday morning at about nine o clock when his car stalled on the Big Four tracks near his home. He jumped from the automobile just before it was struck by a slow freight train. the collision damaged his car and knocked it off the track.
Wilbur Gatewood, previously critically ill with pleural pneumonia, has shown marked improvement and is progressing toward recovery.
Col Frank Knox of Chicago Republican VP candidate and Raymond S Springer of Connersville Governor candidate will headline the Indiana Republican Rally at Roberts Park Connersville on Saturday August 8. Afternoon program features Springer and state candidates. Knox to speak at night. Party leaders expect a large turnout with parade and food concessions.
The county beverage board advised granting a retail beer license to R. W. Pitts of Carthage for a lunchroom, effectively a renewal after succeeding Ross Parrish. Two more permits were urged for renewal, the Louis Hotel and Wilhelm's Cafe at Rushville.
Rush county Roosters club held a regular meeting at Little Flat Rock church last Thursday night with about fifty people present. Talks covered farm bureau essays on the county live stock show opportunities for youth. Games and songs followed. ice cream was served at close.
Carneys take a two year lease on the former Hubert Hunt radio and appliance shop building on East Mill street. Carney Hatcheries Inc owners of Carney Grocery lease from Sam Newsom. the Radio and Appliance Shop will move next door east soon.
Fran ces Brindley daughter of Mr and Mrs M E Brindley of Madison will marry Don Weller former Indiana University football star and Elkhart High School coach in Madison on August 2 She recently graduated from Indiana University and has taught at Carthage High School Her campus activities included Chi Omega Pleides Panhellenic Council and drama Weller earned all East honors in 1934 and won the Balfour award He was a member of several student and honor groups
The Powawatomi named Lake Manitou for devil like Manitou. Legends say a snake shaped creature with red eyes haunts the one mile east Rochester lake. Some attribute sightings to large spoonbill catfish caught historically at 250 pounds. The lake, 886 acres, hosts many fish and is stocked yearly.

A fire sparked by a B and O railroad train damaged a wheat field near the county infirmary last Thursday afternoon. Rushville firefighters battled the blaze as Chief Joe Brown sustained a lacerated hand while helping tear down a fence to admit a pumper.
