Plans Made For 4H Camp In Rush County
Rush County 4H Camp committee met July 11 at the Court House to finalize plans for the Hassmer Hill camp in Versailles Indiana August 11 14. Sixty one girls and forty three boys are registered though space allows fifty four girls and fifty four boys. Extra registrations encouraged at the County Extension Office with girls becoming alternates and potential acceptance. Classes include crafts swimming wildlife nature study and first aid. Numerous committees were named for first aid swimming campfire newspaper wildlife and nature study song leadership social recreation vespers flag raising recreation and crafts. Camp directors are C L Spuller and Ron Humphrey with Harold Campbell as camp manager and Jean Cox and Harold Clifton as deans. Kenneth Brashaber and Phil Mitchell lead the point system governing trophies and awards. Junior leader assistants may compete unless they attended the June 1960 Junior Leader Training Camp. The group departs August 11 at 1 30 p m from the Rush County Fair Pavilion and all participants must bring health sheets.

Carthage High Band Leads September State Fair Parade
The Carthage High School 60 piece band under Harold V. Taylor headlines the September State Fair Band Parade and Contest. The event starts at 8 a.m. in the Grandstand with free seating for about 15 000 spectators. Five national judges will award 1 000 in cash prizes and trophies to winners. Last year saw 75 of 93 bands participating and a total marching time of 3 hours 9 minutes 40 seconds.

Carthage lost two Arlington Softball League games. Shelco beat Carthage 61 to 0 to tie for first with Glenwood while Lanning’s shut out Fairland 1 to 0. In the later game Carthage’s Russell allowed three hits. Asher struck out nine in Shelco win. Ross then knocked off Carthage 3 to 0 with Markley fanning nine. Two Rush County 4H members David Bills and Judy Alexander will speak at the District Public Speaking Contest at Hagerstown High School.
