A lightning event last Saturday burned the old Sugar Grove Farm barn on Mrs. Minnie Adkins land tenanted by Sam Burton. The barn, uninsured by Burton, held 20 tons of hay 50 bushels of corn and several implements. The storm also caused widespread damage across Rush County with downed trees and damaged roofs.
Freddie Magee, son of Noah Magee, uncovered a pheasant nest with eleven eggs while picking raspberries in a woods near Bearl Magee's farm. This appears to be the first nest found in the area, and Dr. and Mrs. McNabb credit their efforts.
Carthage Merchants defeated Newcastle 13 to 8 before rain halted play in the fifth inning. Gardner pitched well for Carthage with seven hits allowed and six strikeouts as McCorkle and Clayton homered and Moore added a triple. A late defensive miscue on a line drive led to a safe call after a shoelace catch that stirred debate.
The Merchants defeated their holiday opponent 40 to 14 and 724 to 21 11 in the report. They are scheduled to play at Fountaintown next Sunday.
A group from Indianapolis and nearby towns gathered at Riley Park Greenfield for the Fourth of July. They returned to the Chonan home for a display of fireworks in the evening.
Mrs Grace Porter Dickerson died at her home in Carthage Friday morning after a five year illness. Born October 15 1876 near Carthage she lived in Ripley township all her life. She married Douglass Dickerson in 1898 and had four children two of whom died. Survived by her husband two children Eugene and Thelma M ed three grandchildren and her mother Mrs Allen Hill of Charlottesville. Funeral services were held at the late home with Rev Ed Smithee officiating. Pallbearers listed and burial at Town Cemetery Carthage. D P Dunn funeral director.

Ralph B. Jones 33 of Rush County died at 8 30 a m Tuesday at his mother s home near Rush 3 from complications of diseases He was born April 11 1900 to Elbridge G and Ann Eliza Beher Jones He leaves five sisters Nellie Jessup LeNora Maude Fern Sells and two brothers Curtiss Floyd plus a deceased Tracey Funeral services were held at 2 p m Thursday at the family residence with Rev C A Shake of Rushville officiating Interment followed in East Hill cemetery Rushville
John Coffin aged 31 died after a three month illness at Robert Long hospital. The disease is a rare yeast affliction affecting the skull lining, with only four known cases in the United States and forty globally. Indiana holds the sole U.S. case. Coffin taught at Indiana University and pursued a PhD, finishing his thesis except for one paragraph. He could not attend commencement. a professor delivered his diploma. Survived by wife, parents, seven sisters. Funeral in Muncie conducted by Rev. E. L. Smithee. interment also in Muncie.
Thursday evening several friends organized a surprise party for Mrs Stan Worthington. The gathering featured euchre games and and light refreshments were served.
Miss Ellen DeSchipper was home over the weekend visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John DeSchipper.
Tristram Coggeshall and family moved from North Carolina in 1832 and settled near the Newby farm. About 1844 he opened a tan yard with vats of oak boards, processing hides with lime, hair removal, and tanning bark, yielding shoe and harness leather. He built a sizable business, at times earning around $1,000 in a year.
A Kansas City Star naturalist describes wasps as ancient and diverse. True wasps nest in clay or wood, with wax cells. larvae feed on specific prey and become adults after pupation. Digger wasps dig ground tunnels with a single egg and paralyzed prey. Mason wasps may have inspired early pottery.
Francois de Bonnivard, born 1496 in France, gained a Geneva priory, supported the republic, was imprisoned at Chillon in 1530, freed in 1536, and became a Genevan patriot and scholar. His life inspired Byron's poem.
The Hecla volcano in Iceland produced history’s largest lava flow in 1783, extending about 45 miles and 15 miles wide. Despite vast lava, Iceland’s sparse population limited destruction compared to crowded nations. Hecla rises over 5,000 feet with five craters but has had no eruptions since 1845 after 18 known eruptions.
The Official Board meets at the parsonage Wednesday at 8. Ladies Aid gathers Thursday at Mrs Arthur Rogers home. Prayer meeting Thursday 7 30. Junior church meets Friday at 2 then picnic with sandwiches for supper. Sunday services as usual with Junior class leading. Baptism at 2 Sunday afternoon at the church with 2 30 service. Wade Walker will drive the school bus with extra cars available.
Walnut Ridge delegation of 27 from Indiana Yearly Meeting travels to Quaker Haven on Wyant school bus Monday to Friday. Carthage group includes 12 members with listed church participants. Next worship is an echo service and the Regular Monthly Business Meeting is set for July 6. Sunday school attendance up by 28 from last year.
Sunday gathering at the Stewart home featured a pitch in dinner with guests including Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Dalrymple Mr. and Mrs. Harold Stinger Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Reddick and family Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Dalrymple of Knightstown Velma Thelma Schaffer and Lucille Reddick of the S and S Home and Miss Ruth Reddick of Indianapolis.
Town board meeting last Monday decided to remove the idle traffic signal on Main Street. Stop signs will be installed on Mill Street both sides, turning Main into a through street.
Residents express gratitude to all who assisted during the fire at Adkins farm last Saturday evening. Numerous local families hosted and visited, with many relatives and friends sharing meals and hospitality in the days that followed.
