July 4th falls on Sunday prompting 45 members of the Carthage Better Business Association to close July 4 and 5. The State Bank of Carthage Postoffice and auto license branch will also close Monday July 5.
Post offices will be closed and no mail will be handled on Monday July 5 1965. Normal operations resume Tuesday July 6 1965.
Rex Edwards his son Jeff and Carl Ruble with Randy from Rushville joined a Babe Ruth League team to travel to Cincinnati last Thursday night and watch the Reds face the Cardinals.
The official church board of the Methodist Church meets Monday July 5 at 8 p.m. All board members are urged to attend along with other church members.
Mr. and Mrs. George Roland with children Danette and Doug spent three days touring Detroit Michigan Canada Niagara Falls and Cleveland Ohio before returning home. Their daughter Debra remained with Mr. and Mrs. Luther Hull.
Family gathering at Pendleton Park included Rex Edwards and family Carthage Carl Edwards Norman Edwards Paul Edwards Carl Carson Jr Fletcher Edwards Bill Robertson Leisure and family from Charlottesville Greenfield Charlottesville area residents attended with wives and sons.
Mr and Mrs Jesse Kizer have sold their farm south of Carthage to Mr and Mrs Jesse Williams and family, previously of Indianapolis. Williams is a plumber by trade and works at the Eli Lilly plant in Greenfield.
Mr and Mrs Larry Thompson announce the birth of a baby girl on Sunday at Rush Memorial Hospital.
The estate of Nora Reeves is admitted to probate in Rushville. The 1960 will leaves all property to granddaughter Carolyn Jane Wilson and daughter-in-law Lucille Jane Reeves of Route 2 Carthage. Carolyn cannot dispose of real estate until age 30. Lucille Reeves is named executrix with a $3,000 bond.
Mr and Mrs Arlis Lukens of West Palm Beach Florida are visiting with her parents Mr and Mrs Jesse Kizer and his brother Maurice Lukens and family They traveled via New York where they stayed with their son's family in Pine Plains New York Their son serves as a pilot in the military and is stationed in Viet Nam Mrs Lukens is formerly Miss Fredia Kizer.
Mrs. Forrest Marshall and her son Steve attended the funeral at Jones Mortuary in Redkey Indiana. Steve served as a pallbearer. Hoagland was killed in a motorcycle accident in Redkey, a former Purdue University friend of Steve.
Mrs Lenore Wrightsman wife of Leonard Wrightsman and mother of three earned her high school diploma on June 3 at Western Electric In-Plant High School Indianapolis in a special commencement The 43 graduates completed credits in a factory school conducted by Indianapolis Public Schools Arsenal Technical High School issued the diploma Speaker Alexander E Jones Butler University urged continued study as Mrs Wrightsman plans college courses at the WE plant and to pursue further education alongside her factory work
Mikie Gorman, two year old son of Mrs. Rose Whitfield Gorman of New Castle, was admitted to Henry County Hospital last week and is improving after drinking gasoline. Former Carthage residents Mr. and Mrs. Dick Gorman are mentioned. Mrs. David Ray and Earl Herkless are listed as convalescing at Carthage area homes.
Houseguests include Mr. and Mrs. Perry Larmore of Muskegon Michigan visiting Mrs. Ralph Truitt and Mr. Truitt. Also Mr. and Mrs. Wm Cassell near Detroit Michigan were weekend guests of the Truitts.
Carthage visitors spent a weekend camping boating and swimming at Richard Leiber State Park near Cloverdale Indiana. The group included William Alexander and family Gary Stewart and daughters Eugene Wilson and sons Fred Magee and sons plus William Everett Webb and grandson Bart Alexander with James Webb Bayard Baker stopping by on Sunday afternoon.

Carthage Merchants beat Rush County 6 to 3 at home after losing to them 12 to 1 last week. The locals collected nine hits and scored six runs while Rush County managed five hits and scored only in the final two innings. Key hits included a first inning double by Bob McCorkle and a fifth inning rally of four consecutive singles with McCorkle Rex Edwards McClurg and Ronnie Magee driving in runs. Carthage to host an Indianapolis team next Wednesday night.
Merchants outhit Carthage ten to five and seized on nine Carthage errors. J Housston doubled for Merchants while F Magee doubled for Carthage. Muir added a three-bagger. Final score Merchants 12 Carthage 1. Batteries Mehr Iskinner Simmerman for Merchants Patterson Tague Magee McClurg for Carthage.
Arlington edged Carthage 3 2 in a Friday night softball game. Arlington pitcher Stewart allowed four hits and a homer by Fred Magee plus a Muir double. Arlington had eight safeties while Gem pro was routed 18 0 by Shelby Merchants in the abbreviated game. Batteries Arlington Stewart Ross Carthage Tague R Magee.
Tom Pritchett belted a first inning grand slam as Mor ton Memorial defeated Carthage 4 runs to 1. Jeff Wilbur added two singles for the victors while Morton pitched with seven walks and one strikeout. Lafuse took the loss for Carthage after six strikeouts and 11 walks.
Miss Pam Hunt daughter of Mr and Mrs Hubert Hunt is studying dancing for four weeks at the Ellis Duboulay School of Ballet in Chicago Illinois. Mr and Mrs Hunt accompanied her there Sunday and were dinner guests of Mr and Mrs Allen Atkinson and family at Clarendon Hills. Their daughter Lynn and Pam were roommates last year at Butler University.
Jack Fagel and Mr and Mrs Ralph Mosier with Mr and Mrs James Mosier and daughters spent the weekend at Silver Lake in northern Indiana.
Mrs Raymond Kennedy Mrs Lena Newsom and Mrs Mable Manche will entertain the W S C S Wednesday July 7 at 2 pm at the Methodist Church Lesson led by Mrs Gladys Mosley Baby-sitter service available for members desiring the service.

Georgeann McClurg Elliott aged 47 died Friday at Madison State Hospital after years of ill Health due to congestive heart failure. She was born December 14 1917 in Rush County and worked at Container Corporation during World War II. She is survived by son Robert Elliott four sisters and two brothers. Funeral services were held at Hampton Mortuary Carthage with burial in Carthage Town Cemetery.
Bruce McKenzie of Purdue Agricultural Engineering will visit Rush County on Wednesday July 7 to assist farmers with grain handling issues. Three more farms can be hosted for on site visits and guidance on grain bin placement drying equipment and grain movement. Farmers seeking advice on construction location or methods should contact the County Extension Office for individual farm visits.
A Tuesday evening gathering at the County Extension Office drew hog producers veterinarians and feed dealers to review Rush County swine trends over ten years. They discussed breeding stock testing herd management feeding disease control and three Purdue Extension Schools to be offered this winter including Pigs to Pork and Swine Herd Health led by Dr S W Bowers who reviewed the Indiana Hog Cholera Eradication Program and vaccination efforts aimed at a cholera free Indiana and United States.

O C McCarty returns from a two week trip visiting his brother Bert McCarty and family in Ft. Collins and Brush Colorado. He traveled by Eastern Airlines to Chicago Continental to Denver and back. He toured Colorado sights while weather hampered by high water and rain. He stayed with nephew Don McCarty owner of Brush News Tribune. On return he saw flood damage in Denver and Kansas and reports devastation from high water and floods.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Pearson arrived home Friday after a two week trip through the West Their four day visit included Bert McCarty in Fort Collins Colorado and Don McCarty in Brush Colorado Mrs Pearson's father C C McCarty of Carthage joined Bert McCarty at his home Also they spent three days at Council Bluffs Iowa on the return trip They traveled south to start and came back via the north route.
President Marty Matlock called the Ripley Junior Boosters 4-H Club meeting with seventeen members present. The pledge to the flag and 4 H flag were led by Bobby Wright and Linda Sullivan, respectively, and Nancy Barry gave a Health and Safety report on Falls of Unsafe Conditions. The treasurer reported a balance of 5.50, Jane Skillman led singing, and adjournment followed with refreshments provided by Dale Copple.
A meeting at the Carthage Community Center to discuss forming a Cub Scouts Pack is planned for 7 30 p m Wednesday July 7. Scout representative Mr Banta from Connersville will attend to answer questions and invite all parents especially those with boys 9 to 11.
A barn on the Carl Foust farm Route 1 Carthage was struck by lightning and burned down at about 8 p m on Wednesday night. The structure housed a 1937 La Salle a WW I ammunition cart a trailer a small tractor mower and 10 to 15 bales of hay. No livestock were present and the loss was partially insured. Firemen from Carthage Volunteer Fire Department kept the blaze from threatening other buildings. The Fousts thanked the fire department for its efforts.
Guests of Mrs Ruth Cook and numerous families from Mesa Greenfield Brownsburg Fortville San Diego Cincinnati Indianapolis and other places attended gatherings through the week. Bible School attendance at the Christian Church is noted along with camping and fishing trips near Bedford.
Mr and Mrs Carl Foust entertained Sunday with a cooperative dinner at their Fortville home. Guests included Joe Foust of Muncie Miss Caryl Sedgwick of Ligonier Harley Foust of Alexandria Delphia Foust of Indianapolis Mrs Oscar Titus of Markleville Fred Ullmann Elvie Mills and sons Myrtie Foust all of Fortville.
Glen Smith, son of Mr and Mrs Finley Smith, was honorably discharged from the U S Air Force in Sherman Texas on June 11 1965 after four years of service.
David Emery DeWitt 66 of Carthage died Tuesday at Henry County Hospital New Castle after years of ill health. He lived 40 years in Carthage worked 37 years at Container Corporation of America hydro pulper plant. A World War I veteran born February 24 1899 in Huntington he married Dessie Aker February 18 1923 and survived by wife three sons two daughters a sister and three brothers 19 grandchildren. Funeral 2 p.m. Friday Hampton Mortuary Carthage with burial Asbury Cemetery Morris town.
Pearl B. Barrett, 74, died Saturday at 8 10 p.m. in her Route 3 Greenfield home after a long illness. Born in Hancock County, she lived all her life in Greenfield and Westland. She led Westland Sunshine Club, joined VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries, and served WWII as Hancock County Red Cross executive secretary. She taught music in Charlottesville and Westland and was widow of Earle S. Barrett. Funeral at Pasco Memorial Mortuary Tuesday at 1 30 p.m. with Revs. Gene Lewis and Edwin Barker. cremation followed.
Mrs Louise Tuttle and Mrs Virginia Pickle of Bathsheba Chapter No 37 O E S Rushville attended the Grand Chapter meeting in New Albany Indiana hosted by Electa chapter. Youth Day drew 272 children. Tuttle sponsors a Rushville group of 54.
Pvt. Terry D. Goode from Morristown Indiana completed a five week aircraft maintenance course at the Army Aviation School Fort Rucker Alabama on June 25. He entered the Army in 1965 and trained at Fort Knox later graduated from South Western Consolidated High School Knightstown and attended Purdue University Lafayette.
Mr and Mrs Russell Parish were weekend guests of Mr and Mrs Bill Parish and their daughter in Zionsville Indiana. The visit highlighted family ties and social plans in the community.
