Mr and Mrs Theodore Pentzer announce the birth of their son James Wesley Pentzer weighing 8 lb 6 oz born Wednesday January 18 at Bedford hospital. Mrs Pentzer is former Miss Lois Fountain a home economics teacher with three years at the local school.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Truitt return home from a Florida trip visiting friends en route. They stopped in Paoli to see Rev and Mrs Everett Chapman former minister of the Carthage Friends church.
The Nazarene Church hosts a Young People's Revival starting January 25 and continuing on Sunday. Indianapolis resident Ray Campbell is the speaker with special music. All are welcome and urged to attend.
Pvt George J Burris of Morristown Indiana starts six months active duty training at Fort Leonard Wood under the Reserve Forces Act. Specialist Third Class Cecil C Rose of Knightstown Indiana arrives in Alaska and joins the 271st Engineer Battalion for intensive training guarding northern approaches.
Mr and Mrs Joe Davis moved into the front apartment and Mr and Mrs Archie Wilson into the rear of the Rev H D Rich property on North Market street. The Davises came from the country and the Wilsons from the Brown property on Main street.
A fox drive is scheduled Saturday January 28 under the Ripley Township Conservation Club sponsorship. Participants meet at the public square at 9 a m and a free lunch is provided at noon.
Brother of Russell Roland dies in Orlando after three weeks illness. Body brought to Rector Funeral Home Markleville. Services set for Friday at 2 PM with burial in Mechanicsburg Cemetery.
Marcine Cook writes his mother Iva Cook that after an eight week journey he has spent 11 days in Japan then visited Hong Kong en route to Bangkok Siam two days Singapore three days Saigon three days Manila before returning to Guam. He traveled with Pan American World Airways.
Revival services at Carthage Friends Church run nightly through Sunday January 29 with 7:30 pm services including Saturday. Rev. K L Marsh preaches with Russell and Mildred Nigh leading music. Thursday night features Carthage Christian Church, Friday Fletcher Methodist. Concluding Sunday has 10:30 am and 7:30 pm services. all are welcome.

Advanced enrollment for 4H livestock projects for the 1956 State Fair has been recorded and sent to Purdue. Rushville Township reports 13 club members enrolling in Beef Swine Sheep Dairy and Poultry projects across all townships.
Suz anne Bramel scored highest in a statewide homemaking test and will compete for the state Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow title. She earns a gold award pin and her school receives a Betty Crocker cookbook. the national winner will be announced April 12 in Philadelphia with substantial scholarships and trips.
Secretary of State Crawford Parker announces his candidacy for the Republican nomination for Lieutenant Governor of Indiana. A 30 year GOP veteran, he notes he cannot seek a third term as secretary of state and pledges honest, impartial administration if elected. He cites extensive party leadership roles and prior service in Henry County and at the state level.
Carthage High School students will travel to Ball State Teachers College this Saturday for the District Solo Ensemble Contest. Carthage High School defeated Arlington 76 62 as the Blue Raiders led 41 36 at halftime. Jack Smith scored 14 points for Carthage while Parks and Hester fouled out for Arlington amid a game marked by heavy fouling and 40 Carthage free throws to Arlington's 16.
Sorority founder’s day will be observed Saturday evening at the Travertine Room in the Sheraton Lincoln Hotel Indianapolis. The event marks the 37th anniversary of Kappa Kappa Sigma.
Timothy Gilmartin and Mrs. Roy Turner had major surgeries at Hancock Memorial hospital Greenfield and are improving. Billy Hinton shows some improvement at Robert Long hospital Indianapolis. Mrs. Charles Mosier entered Rush Memorial hospital Tuesday and Mrs. Frank Elliott remains seriously ill at Rushville hospital.
Mrs Russell Roland called on her sister Mrs Jesse Barnard Monday afternoon. Barnard remains quite ill in the Greenfield hospital.
Rush County high school seniors joined thirty one Rural Youth members for a January 17 meeting. A debate on youth groups and delinquency sparked discussion. seven new seniors enrolled. Next meeting set for February 21 at 7 30 p m.
William Davis died Sunday at the home of his daughter Mrs. Orville Branson in Little Marion Shelby County. Born August 31 1868 in Rush County he was the son of Elwood and Elizabeth Davis. Surviving are three sons John H near Arlington Frank Morris town and Reuben Carthage two daughters Mrs Ozro McDaniel near Gwynneville and Mrs Branson in Morristown a brother Henry Davis Rushville twenty one grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren. Services were held Tuesday at 2 pm at the L W Hauk Funeral Home Morristown Rev Martin officiating burial in Quaker cemetery.
Rush Lodge calls a regular stated meeting for Wednesday night February 1 at the lodge hall. W H Barbour serves as secretary and issues the notice to members.
The Carthage ministers held a January 20 reorganizational meeting at the Friends parsonage. Rev. Dean McCoy presided. They set March 25 as the start of Union Holy Week Services and elected Rev. Eugene C. Sommer as president with McCoy as secretary. The group will share a weekly religious column in the Carthage Citizen and urge community support to boost church attendance. Ministers’ wives organized plans for the World Day of Prayer at Carthage Friends on February 17 with all local churches cooperating.
Members of the E. L. B. O. W. will meet next Wednesday night at the home of Mrs. Mayme Mc Carty. Co-hostesses are Mrs. Mary Ellen Pearson and Mrs. Grace Porter. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Carroll attended the Hardware Convention at the Murat Temple in Indianapolis Tuesday afternoon.

Mrs Ellen B McIlvaine 87 died at her Carthage area home after a long illness Born March 15 1868 she lived on the same farm most of her life Surviving daughter Ruth Musgrove granddaughter Jane Gray Eakin and two great grandchildren Funeral services were held Monday at the Thompson Funeral Home with Rev Eugene Sommer officiating Attendees from out of town included Lola Willis Elberta Callahan C W Stotts Paul Benson and Hazel Cooper
Frank McCorkhill a 19 year old resident backing from a driveway collided with Kenneth Rhodes of Carthage around noon Saturday. State Trooper Thomas Walker investigated and McCorkhill was charged for no operator's license and failure to yield. He was arraigned and fined $1 and costs on each count.
Carthage Lions Club met last Monday to plan a broom sale drive to aid the blind and a house to house canvass next Monday night. A signs committee reported plans to place directional signs on nearby state highways after a survey. The Rush Memorial Awning project pushes ticket sales for a county wide sale February 18 at the County Fairground Pavilion. Guest speaker William Sorrell of the State Highway Commission discussed highway funding and Indiana’s growing needs, noting other states spend more while traffic and population rise, signaling possible gas tax increases.
The Ripley Farmers Telephone Company released a new telephone directory and asks residents who have not received it to obtain a copy and destroy the old book.
The First Federal Savings & Loan Association of Rushville held its annual meeting at 315 North Main Street. Directors elected or re-elected were Clarence E. Meyers Ivan G. Alexander Norman Crum Parvel Moore Robert Scott and Kenneth L. Earnest. A following board meeting elected officers Clarence E. Meyers president Ivan G. Alexander vice president Robert L. Scott secretary treasurer Virginia Hogsett assistant secretary Marjorie Lambert assistant treasurer Ruth Waits teller.
