Record of Historic Cold Snap on New Year’s Day

Local memories recall a brutal cold wave with readings at 38 degrees below zero. Disputes exist over the exact date, with 1863 or 1864 cited by elders. Miss Sarah Henley preserves a clipping listing January 1 as the extreme day. December 31, 1862 is noted as unusually warm before the freeze. Last Saturday’s thermometers read 23 to 30 degrees below zero.

Union Township Man Seeks County Auditor Post

William H. McMillin of Union township, a Republican candidate for county Auditor, visited the office on Tuesday. McMillin previously ran for sheriff about fifteen years ago and has served on the County Council since its establishment. Friends in Carthage praise his character and expect a strong race if he enters.

Residence Destroyed by Fire on North Main Street

The Dr F W Creger residence on North Main Street burned to the ground Thursday morning. John Tarbet family occupied it and lost upstairs bedding and clothing. Tarbet lacked insurance. the upstairs fire began from a hot coal in a stove connected to a new flue. Neighbors saved adjacent homes as fire crews defended property in a driving rain.
