Leroy Grossett Merrell writes farewell on leaving the local paper after years with Ed Bly and announces Kenneth L. Rhodes will take over as editor and co publisher. Merrell praises Rhodes and the paper's future while expressing gratitude to Ripley readers and staff.
State extension office lists four Purdue speakers at Rush County extension schools on Tuesday January 29. Milroy and Mays high school buildings host all day talks on crop production farm economics machinery and hog diseases. Free admission invites residents to attend at either site.
Mrs Gertrude Jessup and her granddaughter Martha Sue Pike spent Saturday night with Mr and Mrs Charlie Blankenship, sharing hospitality and conversation in the country home.
The Community Theatre reopens with a free all afternoon show starting at 1:00 p m and running uninterrupted until 11:00 p m The event is sponsored by Carthage business leaders to showcase the venue and its modern sound and projection systems with a double bill for the opening night and day.
Indiana farmers are invited to participate in a national land ownership survey by the Bureau of Agricultural Economics. About one in ten farmers will receive a questionnaire in January to collect data on land operation, ownership, and tenancy. Responses are confidential and aim to guide long term agricultural policy. County agents urge full participation to achieve representative results.
Indiana's Republican administration pushes to regain possession of the State Fair Grounds. The State Fair board has awarded concessions and awaits an Army survey report on federal restitution for repairs. Estimates claim about 600000 dollars needed to restore buildings and grounds to pre war condition. Lieutenant Governor James says roofing and painting are top priorities and repairs should begin by March to meet the late August fair opening.
Mrs Hubert Hunt was in Methodist hospital in Indianapolis for several days of observation this week.
Kenneth L. Rhodes buys L G Merrell’s stake in the Citizen and becomes editor and co publisher on the first of the month. Rhodes, a Carthage native and DePauw graduate, has Navy and Fleet Hometown News service experience and prior work at the Carthage paper. Alonzo L. Tuttle remains co publisher and Grace Porter continues as society editor. Merrell plans to start a printing and writing venture.
Hugh Weber president of the Ripley Lions club and noted agriculturist was operated on last Wednesday at Fordice and Lawrence clinic in Rushville. Doctors say it was minor and he should refrain from work for thirty days. He is home recovering.
News notes Mrs. H. O. Pitts suffered a stroke last Saturday and is confined to a Ft Lauderdale hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Pitts left Carthage before Christmas to spend time in Florida. She is expected to be moved to an Indianapolis hospital for further treatment when possible.
William Frost, who sold his Carm or Knightstown restaurant two and a half months ago, confirms he is back in the restaurant business. He says he sold the Knightstown place to Hugh and Bill Smith of this area, and his current plans are unclear while he and Mrs. Frost remain residents of Carthage.
Indiana business and social leaders join the 1946 March of Dimes campaign opened January 14 in Rush county and nationwide. A radio address by President Truman on January 30 marks the drive climax. Half of funds stay with local chapters to aid polio victims. the rest supports national research and emergency relief.
Twenty-year-old Joseph Therri en of Lawrence Massachusetts travels to Carthage to see Eddie Stephens a 21 year old torpedoman from the USS Caperton. Both served 28 months in the Pacific including Tarawa. Stephens' parents Mr and Mrs Joseph Stephens live in Carthage.
Mrs. Robert Spangler received a note from Mrs. Fred Sohn in California stating they are enjoying the pleasant climate. Alvin Sohn, recently out of service, is with his father in a real estate business.
Cubmaster Wilbur Mc Corkle announces a Cub court of honor to be held Monday night at seven o clock in the Lions hall. All parents are invited to attend.
J A Reynolds acting chairman of the Lions committee on military affairs asks parents and friends to submit the names of service men not yet listed on Ripley's honor roll. He believes several names remain and urges cooperation to complete the community roster before the boys return home.
Paul Clevidence, chair of the Ripley Victory Clothes drive, reports about 1000 pounds of clothing bedding and shoes collected so far. With 12 days left the goal is 1200 pounds more to match last April and prove success. Local stores and the Citizen serve as drop sites.
The senior class of Carthage school will hold a fund raising sale Saturday morning at The Citizen office. Pies will be sold to raise money for a trip to Washington D C for the class later this year. The young sales ladies invite the public to come and enjoy the pies.
The Lions Club dinner meeting last Monday saw many absences including President Weber due to surgery. The club voted ten dollars to the infantile paralysis fund. Mr. and Mrs. Dreyer hosted with home made motion pictures of their Africa trip and life in New York, showing friends no longer alive.
The annual business meeting convened last Tuesday in Union Hall with routine sessions and a surprise guest, Mr. Janey of Harrison, Ohio, a union organizer.
Miss Martha Jo Bentley resigns as Home Economics teacher at the ISSC Home and accepts the position of Home Demonstration Agent in Randolph County based at Winchester.
The Ripley Farm Bureau will convene in the Auditorium next Monday with C. L. Spuller of Rushville as guest speaker. Special music and refreshments will be served.
Mrs W J Henley will resume her position Friday at the B Gehr lein Hat Shop in Indianapolis, returning to duties after a leave. The local business announces her return as a valued member of the sales team.
The Carthage Blue Raiders defeated the Morton Memorial Tigers 29 to 25 on their home court. Carthage led 12-10 at half and built a 20-16 edge by end of the third as Morton foul trouble marred the visitors. Edwards 11 and McClurg 9 led Carthage. Rankin scored 14 for Morton. The Morton seconds also fell to Carthage 19-17.
Short Shots notes Rankin Morton, a 4 year man, as the determining power in the Tiger victory while K Harcourt’s foul hinged the outcome for the Cardinals. It praises all teams and highlights the Morton center, touted as the tournament’s tallest at 6 ft 8 in. Scores: Hancock Eden 19 Fortville 7. Shelby Morristown 63 Fairland 36.
Morton defeats Milroy 44 41 and 36 33 to finish with a title run. Arlington beats Raleigh 57 37 and Morton earlier 45 31. New Salem 40 33 over Carthage. Milroy 40 16 over Manilla. Milroy 41 20 over New Salem. Morton 41 33 final score over Milroy.
The Lions voted Monday night to fund a cup for the Carthage freshman with the best grade. The engraved honor piece will carry the student's name and be kept at the school with future top students added.
Mr and Mrs J A Lineback attended the Indiana chapter gathering in Indianapolis at 3 pm Sunday. The program featured organists violinists and the DePauw University choir directed by George W Gove with Franz Rodfors substituting on piano and teaching at DePauw University.
