A roller skating session is planned at the Community Center this Friday night for interested participants. The Carthage Legion Post will hold a meeting next Wednesday January 14 at 8 p.m. at the Community Center.
Roger Gordon Norfleet age 22 of Carthage and Lois Ellen Conley age 18 of Carthage RR2 apply for a marriage license. The notice lists both applicants and their residences.
Donald Stoten Jr. placed third with 54.6 bushels per acre, while Walter Lottes of Dubois County led the state with 57.6 and George Shell of Madison County finished second at 54.7. In a separate incident near here, Ted Sibley failed to slow in time and struck James Gray’s tractor and manure spreader, totaling the spreader and causing about 350 dollars in damages to Sibley’s car.
Laura Elaine Jones, daughter of Mr and Mrs William Jones of Carthage, born January 1 at Rushville Hospital, is rewarded as the first baby of 1959. The family includes six children and Mrs Jones is formerly Geneva Wells daughter of Mr and Mrs Clyde Wells.
Miss Waynetta Clark daughter of Mr and Mrs Wayne Clark and a 1958 Carthage High School graduate completed training at the Elkhart University of Medical Technique in Elkhart Indiana last week and is now qualified as a Dental Nurse.

The regular P T O meeting is scheduled for Tuesday night January 13 at 7 30 Daylight Saving Time at the Community Center. The Carthage Waterworks revenue bond issue of 120000 was sold by the town board with Cities Security Corporation and State Bank of Carthage bidding together at 4 percent and a 470.89 premium. Unsuccessful bidders offered 454 percent with 555.55, 4 percent with 503, and 4 percent with 456 premiums. Improvements include two new wells and distribution system upgrades. The Public Service Commission approved the higher rate schedule doubling most customers from 1.25 to 2.50 monthly. a 150 hydrant rental fee was set for 34 hydrants. The plant was built in 1936 with a prior 35000 bond issue.
The Better Business Association of Carthage held a Tuesday noon meeting led by President Frank Hampton. Minutes and treasurers report were approved, 1959 membership cards issued, and officers elected with Hubert Hunt as president Clyde E Ruby as vice Parvel Moore secretary treasurer and Jane Rhodes assistant Royce Joseph and Fred Magee appointed to audit the books.

Manilla defeated Morton 46 to 39 and New Salem beat Arlint on 64 to 59 in first round county tournament games on Thursday night. The Carthage Raiders will face Manilla in the Saturday afternoon opener.

Rush County youths joined a Purdue campus visit called Operation Brain Power with 26 local boys and six Purdue alumni. The event showcased new facilities and speeches by Purdue leaders. Nearby meetings discussed swine disease management and beef production, while the Jr 4-H Club planned district contest entries and a survey for Breeder's Gazette plus a runt pig project to aid local herds.

Over 200 men and women attended a county wide banquet at the Durbin Hotel in Rushville hosted by Rush County farmers. Dr Earl Butz of Purdue spoke on urban rural blending and the changing American Dream highlighting leadership and education as key resources. Alton Gordon presided and Rev Herbert Glass gave the invocation.
