Merrill Coffin former Carthage resident and son of the late Mr and Mrs Enos Coffin died of a heart attack at his Bloomington home. Funeral services were held Monday in Marion with burial in Marion cemetery.
Elmer E. Holloway aged 93, native of Knightstown and organ and piano craftsman, died Sunday at Pleasant View Rest Home in Indianapolis. He was father in law of Donald Winslow and made his home there. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Knightstown Methodist church with burial in Glencove cemetery.
Parvel Moore Hugh Trowbridge and Roy Robertson of the Rush County Hospital Improvement Committee attended a hospital meeting Wednesday night. Tickets for a project culminating February 18 1956 were distributed to the six clubs in the county. More plans will be announced later.
The Hunt family held its annual Christmas breakfast Monday December 26 near Carthage with 39 members, all but five attending. Local guests included the Ruby and Hunt families from Carthage, while others came from Greenfield Taylor University Rushville Knightstown Mays and Taylor University. The gathering has occurred since 1919 with strong attendance. several guests stayed for the Christmas dinner.
Bob Moore invites the public to John Deere Day at the Community Center this Friday January 6. The program begins at 10 a m and promises entertainment and a good time for all with movies and more on the bill.
Mr and Mrs Jack B Moore and family moved Saturday to Pendleton Miss Bernice Branson purchased the Moore property on South East street and is moving this week
Donald I. Renegar resigns as vice president cashier and director effective January 15 1956 after twenty years with Rushville National Bank rising from bookkeeper in 1936 to top roles. He will take over the Ruhlman Insurance Agency at Rushville and held prior positions with Hoosier Public Utility Company.
Mr and Mrs Robert Magee welcomed a son named Robert Darryl born at Rush Memorial hospital on Tuesday at 1252 AM. The baby weighed 6 pounds 9 ounces and is the first newborn of 1956 in Rush County. Mrs Magee is Norma Jean Hamilton, daughter of Mr and Mrs Jay Hamilton of Carthage R R 1. The baby is the grandson of Mr and Mrs Robert Magee of Carthage.
Mr and Mrs Jesse Henley are wintering with their daughter Mrs J D Calvert at 1115 Key Street Maumee Ohio They invite correspondence from their many friends in the community during the season seeking greetings and good wishes from familiar acquaintances.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Pearson were Monday dinner guests of Mr and Mrs O C McCarty.
The annual county tournament begins Friday at 6 30 p m in Rushville Gym with seven teams. Carthage draws a bye to the semi finals. six others compete Friday night for three spots in Saturday eliminations. Morton seeks a fifth straight title. Milroy and New Salem cap Friday’s games. Tickets 60 cents single, $1 50 season.
E L B O W members enjoyed a pleasant evening at Mrs Edna Mc Daniels home with Mrs Anna Miller assisting. The meeting chaired by Mrs Mary Ellen Pearson included twelve members. Friendly Circle met with eight attendees and a white elephant sale followed by refreshments. Home Garden Club plans a meeting with Mrs Nelle Newby. Numerous New Year dinners and visits noted, including Nellie F Lower winning a $50 scholarship to Ball State Teachers College for a strong 4-H record. fund is supported by Rush County Home Demonstration Council and various groups.
Purdue entomologist M. Curtis Wilson reports the 1955 Indiana corn crop suffered an estimated 10.303 million dollar loss from corn borers. He bases this on two percent damage per borer per stalk, with about 9.54 million bushels destroyed, despite only moderate to light first brood infestations and high second brood survival.
Harry Tumilty Jr a 4 H Club member from Center township won a wrist watch as a prize in the 1955 4 H Tomato Club contest. He was state winner in the Tomato Double Tonnage event with 14.8 tons per acre on eight acres. Tumilty has four years in 4 H Tomato Club and is a top state winner each year. The gift was presented by Charles Amick manager of Mays Packing Company, with support from Indiana Canners Association. Kenneth Brashaber is his adult leader. He used Rutgers plants and 1100 pounds of fertilizer per acre for his 1955 yield.
Mr. and Mrs. Russell Roland called at Hancock County hospital Monday afternoon to visit Mrs. Roland's sister who is critically ill. Mr. and Mrs. Noah Leisure were Thursday evening dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Louder and their son Harold last week.

Mrs Mary Ellen McClurg hosted the Twice Four bridge club Tuesday afternoon with Mae Moore and Flossie McCorkle earning honors. Other attendees included Mary Taylor Bertha Beck Leone Mosier Rachel King and Mary Gatewood as refreshments were served.

Mrs. Elmer Hunt and Mrs. Donald Ruby joined Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Hunt and daughter Pamela for dinner. Auda Jones of Anderson visited Grace Gurley. Gurley Beher and Bush visited Norene Phelps and her son Warren in New Castle. Cheryl Ann Stinger of Indianapolis spent the weekend with her grandparents Henry and Mary Stinger.
Members of the Four Township Farmers Institute met at the Courthouse to finalize plans for the institute to be held at Moscow School on January 26 and 27. Exhibits by 4-H girls and boys, open agriculture and domestic arts. Rev. Peter E. Soudah keynote speaker, Neal Willey chairman. Talent Night featured. premiums and classes announced by committee and extension office.
James E. Gatewood aged 88 died at 4 45 Tuesday morning at his home on Ind 9 south of Fountaintown after a long illness. He was born in Shelby County in 1867, married Fannie Smith in 1889, and spent much of his life in Shelby County with 20 years in Rush County as a farmer. He was a member of the Christian Science Church in Shelbyville and Boston. Survivors include daughter Inez Hendrix living with him, brother William Gatewood of Carthage, three grandchildren Granville Moore Rushville James Hulman Shelby County Morris Hendrix Muncie, and five great grandchildren.
Mr and Mrs Noah Leisure departed Wednesday morning for Fort Pierce Florida where they will remain several weeks assisting relatives and enjoying the winter climate.
Rush County farmers are invited to a Crop Extension School on Thursday January 12 at the Farm Bureau auditorium Spencer Street Rushville. The program opens 10 30 a m with Everett Stanley presiding Purdue agronomy official K E Beeson speaks on soil testing and fertility. A 10 50 a panel discusses experiences with Purdue soil tests and fertility practices. Afternoon sessions 1 00 feature farms panels on labor saving grain handling Bruce McKenzie talks low cost grain handling setups. Beeson closes with fertility crop production and variety issues for 1956.
Everett Stanley of Center township was elected chairman of the Rush County Better Crops Association. Harvey Arnold Jr of Union township is vice president, Marion Liggett of Jackson township secretary treasurer, with an executive committee named from Center Ashville and Center townships. Directors represent each township. Plans include multiple variety plots for corn soybeans oats wheat and alfalfa to study yields and growing habits. Stanley to serve on Extension Advisory Committee. Five acre memberships offered for corn and soybeans by May 15. 1956 Corn Show set for December 5-8 with Dyer as superintendent and Arnold as secretary. Eighteen members attended. Ralph Miller retiring president presided.
Carthage Independent basketball team won a Morristown tournament last Thursday night defeating Carrollton 61 to 42 and Shelbyville 52 to 26. The two wins earned the team a trophy, while box scores list Mrs. William Carraway as New Noble guest and several local families as visitors and dinner guests over New Year’s period.
Sanford Hill, 80, died at his home west of Carthage after a several month illness. Born September 1, 1875, he was a son of Calvin and Elizabeth Newsom Hill and a member of the Carthage A. M. E. Church. Surviving are his widow Laura, two sons Verland and Harold of Indianapolis, daughter Pauline Calhune of Chicago, brother Sandy of Indianapolis, and three half sisters Julia Seales, Florence Johnson, and Minnie Roberts. Funeral services were at Fletcher Methodist church at 2 PM with Rev. William Bivens officiating. Burial followed in Riverside Cemetery.
A Rush County committee met in the extension office to plan the annual banquet for February 22 at the Jackson Township School. Wilbur Whitehead of Lebanon will speak on making adjustments in farm operation to meet changing agriculture. Master of ceremonies will be David White. tickets to be announced. open to any interested farmer and wife. Other committee members include Joe Alexander Marion Liggett Phil White and John Crane.
