Mine Tragedy at Clinton Indiana Claims One Life

Rescue teams freed twenty trapped miners after a fire in Crown Hill No. 6 mine near Clinton Indiana. Jesse Hayes, 33, died from suffocation while attempting to escape. over 4,000 locals aided in the search and rescue. Concurrently Blue River incident at Shelbyville, 11-year-old boy drowned, two others survived.

Final report by retiring Rush County treasurer James Tarbet shows total delinquent taxes of 42 246 49 on the books. Deputy Miss Heler McClure elected after his retirement. fall installment collections totaled 241 248 79 with 15 166 62 delinquent. Carthage Corporation paid 6 681 82 for the fall installment with 608 59 delinquent. remaining on the books includes Carthage Corporation 1 821 75 and Ripley township 2 049 72.

The Carthage Service club gathered in the basement of East Street Christian church with twenty four members. After a supper, M D Wilton showed pictures from the State Welfare Depart ment and Harold Ruby won a free supper next meeting. The group approved Christmas work plans and adjourned until January 16.

Nancy L Herkless, 94, Dies in Richmond

Nancy Louisa Herkless, widow of John A. Herkless, died at her daughter Mary Wilkins home in Richmond after years on a farm near Carthage. Survived by four sons and three daughters including Orville Rushville Ora Earl Carthage Heber Knightstown and Carrie Call Knightstown. Sam preceded her. Body to Knightstown via Wilson ambulance. Funeral plans pending.

Carthage Reports Very Low Fire Loss in 1938

Fire losses in Carthage during 1938 were exceptionally low with only two calls all year. A basement Auditorium fire and an elevator fire burned straw bales but caused no damage. Ruth E White, manager, filed the call report.
