Jesse Hayes, 33, died from suffocation while attempting to escape. over 4,000 locals aided in the search and rescue. Concurrently Blue River incident at Shelbyville, 11-year-old boy drowned, two others survived.

Nancy Louisa Herkless, widow of John A. Herkless, died at her daughter Mary Wilkins home in Richmond after years on a farm near Carthage. Survived by four sons and three daughters including Orville Rushville Ora Earl Carthage Heber Knightstown and Carrie Call Knightstown. Sam preceded her. Body to Knightstown via Wilson ambulance. Funeral plans pending.
