The House voted to raise the national debt limit from 49 billion to 65 billion and to enhance Treasury control over savings bonds. It approved defense spending requests, and outlined changes to farm programs, aid for Britain, and a massive shipbuilding push to expand the two-ocean navy.
The Ripley Township Historical Society met at the Stenger home east of here for a cooperative dinner and officers were re elected. F O Belzer spoke on American youth and Boy Scouts linking Europe trip to youth training and a future museum project. The group discussed traps and thanked hosts Mr and Mrs Stenger. Next meeting set for August at the South Main street museum home.
January figures from Margery Anderson county attendance officer show low attendance in township schools due to colds and influenza. Total 4,421 absence days with 4,174 legally excused and 108 tardiness cases recorded across Arlington, Carthage, Glenwood, Manilla, Raleigh, Moscow and other areas.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 oclock at Kingston Presbyterian Church with Rev Giland er in charge. Burial followed in Center Cemetery. Charles Warrick, 48, father of Mrs. Howard McCorkle, died Sunday morning at Memorial hospital Greensburg after a brief illness. He is survived by his widow and ten children. The family lived near Kingston in Decatur county at the time of death. Warrick's death marks the seventh in Mrs. McCorkle’s family in two years, and her sister is seriously ill at Monticello hospital.
The Carthage school band led by Mrs. Harold Phelps along with Mrs. Ross Tweedy and principal J A Reynolds marched from the Rushville draft board to the Louis hotel on Friday. They performed again at the bus station as three volunteers departed for Fort Harrison. Wesley McFatridge is the grandson of Mrs. Mary Tarbet.
The Carthage Drivers announce a home game Thursday February 27 against the Hoosier Athletic Club girls team. The visitors carry a 20–6 season record and are noted for a fast pace, having beaten several strong boys teams in Indianapolis. Advance tickets are 20 cents, door 25 cents, at local outlets.
Mrs. Walter Addison reports the sudden death of her brother-in-law Joseph Prifogle on Thursday in San Pedro California. Funeral services were held Monday. Survivors include his widow and one son at home and a daughter living in Spokane Washington.
The Carthage Committee and Small Democracies of Europe held their first meeting at the Methodist parsonage on Friday evening February 7. They planned to have town groups sign resolutions approving a plan for distributing supplies. Rev. C. V. McMillan was elected president and J. A. Lineback secretary, with several others in attendance.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock for John Wall of Marion a former Carthage resident and superintendent of a mill who died Sunday at his home.
Miss Rosalie Humes underwent a throat operation at St. John’s hospital in Anderson on Friday and is improving nicely.
Mrs. Ross Tweedy attended the Grand Council meeting of the Kappa Kappa Sigma sorority at the Claypool hotel in Indianapolis Saturday.
Roy Schmaltz an employee of Carthage Tractor and Implement Co. is attending the John Deere tractor school in Indianapolis this week.
The Lanier Memorial in Madison, a state historic site designed by Francis Costigan and built about 1843, attracts visitors from across the nation. Restored furnishings and its riverfront columned porch draw architects and writers, with 12 608 total visitors in the past year and a long-standing role among Indiana memorials since 1926.
East Street Christian Church begins an eight week program of revival and evangelism with Sunday sermons on Great Christian Convictions. Daily devotionals are provided and six Wednesday Christian Witness services are planned to deepen Christian living leading to Palm Sunday personal visitation. Holy Week features nightly evangelistic services and a candle light communion Thursday.
Realty activity in Rush County spikes in January with about 43 deals totaling nearly $50,000. The month’s largest sale involved 152.63 acres in Union township sold to William L Green and others from George C Alexander and Roy Alexander trustees for 17500 dollars. Other transfers in Carthage and Ripley townships include multiple parcels in section 22 and section 3.
Morton Memorial Tigers defeated the Carthage Raiders 44-23 on Morton’s floor. Swihart led Morton with 13 points while Ewing and Spacey each notched seven for Carthage. The Tigers held leads through all quarters, with a late Carthage push in the third. Morton reserves topped the Little Raiders 20-12.
County sports brief shows matchups including Carthage at Charlottesville Knightstown at Morton Arlington at Westland New Salem at Mays Manilla at Raleigh Cowan at Milroy Greensburg at Rushville scheduled for Friday night basketball games with local schools and communities expected to compete.
The Ripley Township Conservation Club holds its first year meeting on Wednesday February 26 at 7:00 pm in Henley's pool room. A free feed of sandwiches and coffee will be served. Field and Stream motion pictures on hunting and fishing will be shown. Farmers are invited to discuss fox hunts. Officers are Earl Addison president Frank Alexander vice president and Carlos Brooks secretary treasurer.
A Carthage High School gathering Monday Feb 24 at 7 30 p m will feature Mr E F Brown from the extension office explaining the agricultural outlook and the 1941 AAA program. Attendees will seek information on marketing quotas for wheat and corn.
