Holiday cheer mixed with a humorous town scene as Mrs Clyde Henley enjoys a sled ride behind an automobile. The column notes strong store sales, a downed Christmas tree, and cards from servicemen including Dick Henley and Dick McNabb. Subscriptions remain steady despite tight news time.
Ripley township nears the halfway point in a current war fund drive reporting a total of 515.50 with a quota of 31,080. Chairmen Howard Henley and Mrs. Heitree oversee progress as donations from numerous individuals and groups roll in toward meeting the goal. A long list of contributors includes Mr. and Mrs. Howard E. Henley, Container Corporation, Masonry Lodge, and many neighbors providing varied gifts including 25 and 50 dollar amounts.
Former Carthage residents Mr and Mrs J A Lineback received an interesting letter from former locals Mr and Mrs Frank Shonkwiler. The note mentions their son Payson in service in Pa and work at Hayes and Harriet, and their daughter at De Loe Snterior decorating. Mr and Mrs Shonkwiler now live in Montreal Canada.
A letter to Mr and Mrs Walter J Phelps from Robert Reed reports slow improvement in the Veterans hospital in Indianapolis. Reed was a chemist at the Offainer Corp until taking leave for service and has since faced a medical disease and hospital care.
Mrs. Se Henley reports received seal sale contributions from the Cars Jacksons Club five dollars and various donors including Mr. and Mrs. Bever two dollars and fifty cents, Mr. and Mrs. Humes a dollar fifty, Mr. and Mrs. Parish one dollar thirty, Ruth White, Mr. and Mrs. Stager, Mr. and Mrs. Welch, and Mr. and Mrs. Haroli Ruby totaling two hundred dollars.
A fox drive sponsored by the Ripley township conservation club is set for today Friday. Hunters gather at the public Square at 9:00 a.m. for multiple drives planned through the day. Fox numbers have risen, with a five dollar bounty placed on each fox killed, as farmers suffer losses from predation. The aim is to reduce the fox population by Friday night.
J. A. Reynolds announces a Sunday schedule with Sunday school at 9 30 a m and worship service at 10 30 a m Vernon Riley will be the guest speaker with special music Attendance is invited.
Frank Ashby of Rushville disposed of his restaurant to Robert Turner who plans to reopen the establishment within a few days. Turner expects to continue the business, detailing new ownership and imminent reopening.
Letters from service members reach the Carthage community detailing a South Pacific posting and family news. Cpl J M DeSchipper writes of mail delays, rations, mosquitos, and hopes to relieve front lines. Messages note Sgt Claude Pearson in India and Sgt Carl Wells visiting family after two years in Puerto Rico.
Many households welcomed relatives and friends for Christmas and weekend visits. Names include McGeorge family from Anderson with guests Ruby and Frieda, Spangler and daughter from New Castle, Harold Phelps party, Henley relatives from Richmond and Kokomo, Stout and Coy families, and others from Hammond, Indianapolis, Greenfield, Arlington, Milford, and more. The notices list diverse dinners and weekend stays across multiple homes.
Gov. John W. Bricker will deliver a 15 minute talk titled Ten articles for the New Year on New Year’s night from 10 45 to 11 00 p m over WLW Cincinnati He is an avowed Republican presidential candidate and will outline the nation s hopes for the New Year to Middle West listeners.
License plates for 1944 will go on sale Saturday January 15 according to Robert S Moore local automobile license branch manager The 1944 plates are black and white about half the size of 1942 plates Only one plate will be issued for each vehicle and all driving licenses will be sold then Purchasers must show their 1943 personal and poll tax receipts to obtain licenses as Moore will not issue without them
The Lions Club plans a scrap paper collection on Saturday January 8 to aid the USO drive and the war effort. Residents are urged to gather old newspapers magazines and similar material to be deposited at central points for truck pickup.
Navy and Marine Corps V-5 examinations will be held for Rush County high school seniors and graduates at Rushville high school on Wednesday January 12 1944 at 1:00 p.m. Age limit is seventeen to twenty six. Death claimed 74 year old Gertrude Abercrombie of Rushville after a two week illness. She was widow of Hugh Abercrombie who died six years ago. Survivors include a step daughter Mrs Walter Addison of Carthage. Funeral services were held at Moster Mortuary in Rushville.
The library will be closed Saturday for New Year’s Day. Patrons are advised to plan ahead for returns and access to services not available on that date.
Real estate activity in Rush County during November saw 51 transactions totaling over 133000 dollars.
