Carthage Shop to Stage 1930s Christmas Window Display

The Carthage Radio and Appliance Shop will decorate its front window with a 35-year vintage Christmas scene featuring lighted candles popcorn and other period decorations next Thursday night December 23 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Manager Hubert Hunt will supervise with a fire extinguisher ready in case of a small mishap.

Funeral services were held Wednesday for Nellie Chloe Newby age 8 widow of Roy F. Newby who died Oct 11 1947. She died Monday at Rush Memorial Hospital Rushville after a two week stay born Sept 18 1880 Sheldon Indiana daughter of Samuel Edsal Schoonover and Sarah A Parker Schoonover. She operated the Hartford Insurance Agency in Carthage until retiring in 1961. She was a Fletcher Methodist Church member and W.S.C.S. charter member. Survivors include son Max William Newby of St Louis granddaughter Barbara Ann of San Francisco two sisters and one brother. Burial at Riverside Cemetery near Carthage.

The Carthage Lions Club hosted its annual Christmas dinner at the Lions Den in the Community Center. Seventy-eight attendees enjoyed a bountiful meal and gift exchange, with President Lloyd Manuel presiding and Rev. Paul Boulton leading the invocation. The program featured Mrs. Kenneth Land and the Triple Trio from Carthage Schools performing four songs, plus group singing and audience participation.

Clarence Newton Magee 70 of Carthage died Tuesday at Rush Memorial Hospital after a period as a patient since November 9. A retired Pennsylvania Railroad employee, he lived in Marion before moving to Carthage in 1961.
