The Carthage Radio and Appliance Shop will decorate its front window with a 35-year vintage Christmas scene featuring lighted candles popcorn and other period decorations next Thursday night December 23 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Manager Hubert Hunt will supervise with a fire extinguisher ready in case of a small mishap.
Santa Claus arrives in Carthage at 2 30 p m this Saturday aboard a big red firetruck to greet Ripley Township children. The Carthage Jr Class invites the visit and promises treats for attendees.
Merly of Carthage listed at Sullivan Nursing Home in Sullivan Indiana. Grace Gurley remains at Jackson Nursing Home. Judy Kennedy recovering from surgery and hopes to leave hospital this week. Kittrell Porter of Carthage becomes a new pledge of Phi Delta Theta at Butler University. He joins 226 other Butler men pledged this semester. Porter, a Carthage High School graduate, is a education major freshman at Butler University.
Robert L. Winters was initiated as a Noble in the Shrine at the Murat Temple in Indianapolis on Saturday, December 11.
Pvt. Ronnie Fannin of Ft. Bliss Texas arrives in India by plane for a two week Christmas furlough with his wife and family Mr and Mrs Herb Fannin and family at the holiday season.
Mr and Mrs Randy McClurg of Muncie and friends attended the bowl game between Ball State University and Tennessee. A I played at Murfreesboro Tennessee ending in a 14 to 14 tie. Little Jeff McClurg stayed with his grandparents Mr and Mrs Markes McClurg Friday through Sunday.

Funeral services were held Wednesday for Nellie Chloe Newby age 8 widow of Roy F. Newby who died Oct 11 1947. She died Monday at Rush Memorial Hospital Rushville after a two week stay born Sept 18 1880 Sheldon Indiana daughter of Samuel Edsal Schoonover and Sarah A Parker Schoonover. She operated the Hartford Insurance Agency in Carthage until retiring in 1961. She was a Fletcher Methodist Church member and W.S.C.S. charter member. Survivors include son Max William Newby of St Louis granddaughter Barbara Ann of San Francisco two sisters and one brother. Burial at Riverside Cemetery near Carthage.
Local post office staff substitute workers and spouses gathered at the Durbin Hotel in Rushville for a Christmas dinner. Postmaster and Mrs William Alexander and many couples including the Brooks Mosier Whitfield Flick Carson Hampton and Fannin joined in a social evening after fried chicken.

The Carthage Lions Club hosted its annual Christmas dinner at the Lions Den in the Community Center. Seventy-eight attendees enjoyed a bountiful meal and gift exchange, with President Lloyd Manuel presiding and Rev. Paul Boulton leading the invocation. The program featured Mrs. Kenneth Land and the Triple Trio from Carthage Schools performing four songs, plus group singing and audience participation.

Clarence Newton Magee 70 of Carthage died Tuesday at Rush Memorial Hospital after a period as a patient since November 9. A retired Pennsylvania Railroad employee, he lived in Marion before moving to Carthage in 1961. He was a Wesleyan Methodist Church member and son of George Farris and Leota Andrews Magee born January 3, 1895 in Marion. Survived by four Carthage brothers Maine Glen Merrill Bill and Robert Magee a Carthage sister Mrs Letha Finney of Anderson and several nieces and nephews. services by Rev Robert Golding at 10 a.m. Friday at Hampton Mortuary Carthage with burial Grant Memorial Cemetery Marion.
Carthage defeated Eastern Hancock 47 44 on the local court in a tightly played game. Gorman, Craig Lafuse, Rucker and Hunt sparked the rally with key plays as Carthage held the lead after intermission and improved to a win despite a slow start.
