Westland Bears Fall as Carthage Raiders Win 44 24
Carthage Raiders defeated Westland Bears 44 to 24 on Friday night. Carthage hit 18 field goals while Carr led with 23 points and Calhoun added 12 for the Raiders. Westland showed strong free throw shooting with six of six but trailed from the opening quarter. The Raiders led 10-5 after the first, 24-10 at halftime and 37-15 after three quarters. Westland’s second team won the curtain-raiser 20-19.

Large Group Gives Draft Examinations In Indianapolis
Fifty nine registrants, among the largest since the war began, underwent pre induction tests in Indianapolis on Tuesday. Of the group sent for physicals, thirty nine passed. Participants ranged from 18 to 37 years old and included several with families. Seven Carthage men were among the draftees: Earl E. Silver Star To Lieut Fraze For Gallantry In France
First Lieutenant Vernon D. Fraze of Carthage Indiana received the Silver Star for gallantry in action in France. While commanding a vital outpost his two squadrons of infantry engineers and a light tank faced a large enemy tank and infantry assault, delaying and sacrificing to withdraw his men and providing protective fire as they escaped. He remained behind to cover their retreat at great personal risk, exemplifying leadership and valor.
