Rush County R E M C campaigns extend into December with a banquet at East Street Christian church where over 100 members and guests discussed membership growth. Local farmers praise corn champions Floyd Hiner and Peter Lux while tension grows over nine month school plans and farm bureau tax fears.
Milroy Cardinal forwards lead a third quarter rally to beat Carthage 30 to 16 as Jackson and Harcourt spark the offense. Roberts tops the locals with eight points on six free throws, while Carthage newcomers McKain hit a center field goal.
Friday night games feature Carthage at Mays Greensburg at Rushville New Salem at Orange Silent Hooosiers at Morton Manilla versus Waldron B at Rays Crossing Raleigh at Milroy on the slate.
Governor Townsend extended the deadline for purchasing new auto plates to March 1, 1940, giving Indiana motorists two more months. Driver licenses, chauffeur permits, and truck weight tags must still be bought by January 1. New 1940 licenses and plates go on sale December 11 with local branches ready to issue them after managers received instructions in Indianapolis.
The Rural Electrification Administration allocates 2000 dollars to Henry County REMC to finance members wiring and plumbing. Rules cap the loan at 80 percent of project cost and a five year repayment with at least two payments yearly. The project spans 524 miles of line and covers 1629 members across eight counties.
Report by county recorder Anna F Downey lists forty eight real estate transfers for November in Carthage Ripley township with a high total but a low sum of 29016.38 due to many transfers at nominal amounts. A large sale of 320 acres in Union and Jackson townships to Peter Maury of Madison county is noted for 15400. Others include transfers in Carthage, Ripley township and nearby townships involving multiple local parties and small parcels.
On November 26 the Friends of the 57th Street Meeting in Chicago held a morning memorial for Anna E. Hill. The service followed early Friends custom with speakers praising her character and inspiring understanding.
The Carthage Citizen promotes a Christmas gift subscription offer of one dollar per year for new and renewing subscribers. The notice urges those in arrears to remit and highlights the value of sending the paper to friends in distant places to remember the old hometown.
The REMC member drive opened last Friday at a local Christian church with a chicken dinner. Harry H. Bentley led the meeting and introduced Jean Littell Rush county REMC project manager who noted a Washington broadcast by Harry Slattery on Dec 19. District official R A Dell explained utilization aims as Rush county groups plan December drives to boost farmer electricity access. The gathering listed numerous local residents as attendees.
The annual Christmas Seals sale began November 30 under Rush County Tuberculosis Association sponsorship, affiliated with the Indiana Tuberculosis Association. Dr. Stanley Coulter of Purdue leads Indiana efforts, urging funds to fight tuberculosis through clinics, nursing, school health work, and educational campaigns.
Santa Claus is in town and has visited stores with colorful merchandise to thrill shoppers. The piece urges thrifty early shopping, notes complete stock and wide selections, and recommends reading The Citizen ads to pick gifts and plan a profitable Christmas tour.
Rush county farmers earned awards from the Indiana Corn Growers Association. Forest Morton led with 150.8 bushels per acre, a county and top 10 state record. Gold medals went to 32 members, silver to seven, and bronze to Byron Ball with 80.6 bushels.
The Carthage Town Council met for its last time with current members retiring. Lights were ordered along streets for Christmas. Arthur Lineback retires after 29 years as clerk-treasurer. Ed Bly and Alvan Sohn will join the council. Winfield moves to clerk-treasurer. George Moore Earl Addison Winston Hudson Randolph Reams remain on council.
Rush County farmers dominated the Chicago exposition with several honors. Floyd Hiner won International Corn Duke, Lloyd Dyer placed second in Junior corn regional class, Russell Kinnett and Sandy Phares took first and third in yellow corn Region, Julia Carr earned blue in 4 H food contest, and Richard Crane ranked among the country’s healthiest boys. Fairholme Farms claimed grand champion Percheron Nesus and a second in Percheron filly futurity. C E Troyer of Lafontaine won Corn King for the fourth time.
Mr. and Mrs. Elgin Quick announce the birth of their son Roy Lee a 7 pound baby boy born Tuesday evening at 4 35 at the home of Mrs. Quick's parents Mr and Mrs Lon McCorkle.
Word reached Mrs. Anna H. Phelps of the death of her niece Miss Ann Wadkins in Myrtle Point Oregon last week. Wadkins age seventeen is the granddaughter of Albert Hill lent by Carthage residents.
The Kappa Kappa Sigma sorority postpones its gathering to the evening of December 19. The meeting will combine business and social elements at the home of Mrs. Vera McNabb.
The Christmas social by E L B O W members at Fletcher Methodist Church on December 13 has been indefinitely postponed.
Mrs Florence Ann Retherford age 80 wife of Edward Retherford died at her home east of Carthage after a stroke in 1937 and pneumonia illness. Born February 2 1859 she spent most of life in Rush county. Survived by husband three daughters Hallie Hopper Marian Colvin Marjorie Coffin two sons Byron Lee and one brother Oscar Morris with another son Carl deceased in 1929. Funeral arrangements not yet made.
