William H. Curry of Tipton County repeated his 1936 corn championship at the International Livestock and Grain Show in Chicago becoming the first to win two titles in succession in the event's history.
The Federal Bituminous Coal Commission on Tuesday established new minimum prices for Indiana coal mines, about 25 to 50 cents higher than last year. The higher costs on industrial and domestic fuel are expected to take effect December 16.
A 10,000,000 foot gas well near Charleston West Virginia burst into flames as workers pulled out tools. Friction ignited gas injuring eleven men who were hospitalized. The blast was heard a mile away and all victims are expected to recover.
Thieves smashed showcases with a brick at Shaffer Galleries in Rockefeller Center and stole a Bible once owned by a Russian czar along with silver objects valued near 15000 dollars. Several other valuable pieces were left intact.

Two Rush county farmers captured top honors at Chicago’s International Livestock Exhibit. Floyd Hiner won Region Eight sweepstake reserve and William H Curry took the crown over Hiner. Chester A Meal earned second in Region Eight and Stanley Hurst claimed reserve junior. Indiana producers won 19 of 20 prizes in Region Eight including all white corn placements. Curry, known as Corn King, repeats a 1936 feat becoming the first to win two straight titles.
The Fletcher M. E. church held its first quarterly conference led by Dr. Joseph Moore of Rushville for a Wednesday night 7:15 PM business meeting.
Carthage Independents won their second game of the season at home, defeating Arlington 42 to 36 after a fast start by Arlington. The locals led 35-33 after three quarters and pulled away in the final period behind contributions from former Carthage and Indiana University players.
C E Wooldridge announces retirement from The Carthage Citizen printing plant now owned by Mr and Mrs Bly of Converse Indiana. Bly brings nine years printing experience and previously worked for The Converse Journal. Mrs Bly assists in the office as the new team takes over. Wooldridge expresses gratitude to Carthage and the community for support and says he will always feel warmly toward the town.
Beatrice Creamery of Muncie announces Mrs Marceille Henby as agent and buyer for Carthage. Henby has assumed duties and extends a welcome to customers. The cream station sits first door north of Mathers Restaurant.
Container Corporation resumes operation and production this week after a Thanksgiving shutdown spanning Thursday through Monday morning. Both straw paper machines restarted Monday morning and now have orders for an extended run.
The funeral for Frank Jones 67 brother of Mrs Anna J Sipe was held Saturday at 2 pm at Wyatt Funeral Home with burial in East Bill Cemetery Rushville Attendees from Carthage included Mr and Mrs Ralph Winslow Mr and Mrs S L Newsom Mrs H T Beher Mrs R C Small Mrs Ella Nelson and Miss Winona Newsom.
Miss Mabel DeMoss spoke about her trip to Alaska at the Rushville home of Mrs Lowell Garten Monday night. The event featured a local audience and reflected on scenes and experiences from her journey.
Mary Ewing has been ill for several weeks but is improving and can be up part of the time, according to a brief health bulletin.
Carthage Blue Raiders topped Mays Tigers 25 to 20 as Blondie Morgan scored four and Bob McMichael led with 14 points. Porky Stephens showed potential off the bench, while Mays Coach Mayrose mixed lineups to crack the Raiders defense.
An E L B O W meeting was held at Mrs. Roy Newby's home with Mrs Bayard Baker assisting Mrs Otto McCarty presiding. After business, five visitors and members socialized while crafts by blind Indianapolis students were displayed and sold. Refreshments followed.
Several from Carthage will attend the County Institute of Federated clubs at Rushville Friday, December third. The program covers the Blind, American Citizenship and Conservation with Ira P. Nelson from the State Department of Conservation as afternoon speaker. President Mrs. Baker urges good attendance from Carthage.
The directors meet today to settle bills and conduct regular business. The stockholders will hold their annual meeting on December 14.
Mr and Mrs Harold Culbertson hosted Sunday dinner with guests Mr and Mrs Amiog and Mr Irving ey of Rush e.
Arvey Whitaker and family entertained Thanksgiving guests including Mr. and Mrs. Joe Burgess and daughter Juanita Mrs Rose Gray of New Castle Mr. and Mrs Rolland Layton and son Wendel and Mr. and Mrs Loren Whitaker and son Jackie of Lewisville in a turkey dinner.
Bobbie Dhonau son of Walter and Mrs Dhonau is reported much improved after returning to home from Methodist hospital where he had been ill with typhoid fever for several weeks.
The Carthage Citizen offers a December only price reduction from $1.50 to $1 per year on new subscriptions or for existing subscribers paid up through December 1. The campaign promotes gifting The Citizen for Christmas with weekly letters from home and expires January 1.
Mrs. C. C. Warren of Muncie died from a Saturday collision. Her husband sustained brain concussion rib fractures and internal injuries and remained in serious condition at Ball Memorial hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Phelps attended her funeral Tuesday at 10:30 A.M. in Muncie.

Rev. Raymond Earl McDuffey, born December 21 1873, longtime Carthage area pastor, died at his Cincinnati home Tuesday night. Survived by sons Raymond Clifton Chicago and Cincinnati, sister Cora Weaver Carthage, sister Minnie Redmian Cincinnati, and uncle Arthur McDuffey Carthage. Funeral held at Market Street Christian church in Frazier with Rev. John Dickerson of Oxford officiating. Interment Riverside cemetery.
The Friends Missionary Society will meet Wednesday December 8 one week early. A cooperative dinner starts at 12 30 at the home of Mrs Willetta Henley replacing Mrs Cora N McCarty as host. All church ladies are invited and asked to bring an inexpensive gift for Indians and Home mission work in Tennessee plus their own service.
The Friendly Circle will meet Tuesday evening December 7 with Mrs. Louis Humes and Bell Ball, Mary Taylor and Hazel Cooper assisting hostesses. Responses will ask what goal the circle should reach in the next year. The gathering includes a Christmas exchange party with a price limit of ten cents.
Albert Proffitt was struck and killed by a car on U S Route 52 near the Sexton farm west of Rushville around 3 45 am Sunday. He died in a hospital after being unconscious. survived by a widow and seven children. The body was sent to London Kentucky for funeral services and interment. Police and county coroner investigations point to blameless reporting against Nigh.
The annual Red Cross drive in Ripley township for 1937 was led by the Home Economics club with church representation. The list names many individual members and contributors including M. F. Lovett, Ella Nelson, Roy Herkless, Finley Nelson, and Grace Phelps, among others, along with committees such as the Friendly Circle and Ripley Homemakers Club.
