The M Y F Meeting At Church August 26

The M Y F met at the church Monday evening with twenty seven in attendance. The group sang prayed and discussed the MYF Emblem. They will conduct Sunday morning service in Rev. H Oran Henley retired in Carthage recalls founding the first local telephone network. He helped form the Ripley Farmers Telephone Co in 1900, oversaw lines and exchanges, later joined Carthage Telephone Co, with system growth to about 1500 subscribers before General Telephone buyout.

A pre conversion banquet celebrated General Telephone’s new dial system for Carthage. The event honored longtime operators Vivian Davis and others as the old switchboard faded. General Telephone opens auto dialing in Carthage

Local guests led by L H Meyer and Beile attended a ceremony at the Carthage church basement as the General Company activated its automatic dial system. Officials described the project, staged a live test, and noted some 500 calls in service with remarks from Ora Clayton and A W Winfield.

Dial phone service begins in Carthage with automatic switch

At 9 pm on Wednesday August 28 residents watched a manual system switch to automatic dialing in a $177,000 upgrade. General Telephone Company of Indiana executives explained Carthage’s evolution from early two-operator days to six operators serving about 600 phones, with 1,045 anticipated by 1975.

Rites Held For Harriett Butler

Mrs Harriett Butler 77 of Miami Beach Florida died Saturday at Mayo Clinic Rochester after a year illness. She was born May 21 1880 in Spiceland and lived in Carthage and Indianapolis before moving to Florida 18 years ago. Survivors include husband Charles Butler a niece Mrs Marjorie Dressell and two nephews Russell Ratliff and Harold Ratliff. Services conducted at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Carthage area home with burial in Walnut Ridge Cemetery.

Hunt Reunion Honors Family Gathering at Hunt Home

Relatives gathered Sunday at Mrs. Elmer Hunts home west of Carthage for the Hunt reunion. About seventy guests enjoyed a noon prayer by Clarence Hunt, a business meeting led by president Robert Hunt, and a program with musical numbers by Pamela Hunt and Gary Hunt. Contests and a wagon ride followed, with ice cream served and prayers at adjournment.
