Rev and Mrs Lewis H May left Wednesday to attend the Ohio Yearly Meeting sessions in Damascus Ohio. Damascus marks the place where Rev May was recorded as a minister thirty one years ago. The Mays plan a visit to Malone College in Canton during their trip.
Mr. and Mrs. William H. Dixon and son Jerry completed a two weeks trip to southern Indiana Kentucky Tennessee and Georgia. They visited relatives and friends at French Lick West Baden and other towns, spending time with parents Mr and Mrs William S Dixon and Mrs Minnie Bartl.
Mr and Mrs Robert McKain and children Sherry and Mike enjoyed a weekend vacation from Friday to Sunday in southern Indiana visiting French Lick and Santa Claus.
Three former Carthage teachers join Greenfield Schools for the 1960-61 year. Juanita Cox grades 1 at Riley Elementary, Mary Louise Hill grades 3 at Riley, and Gladys Smith grade 2 at Harris Elementary lead new staff additions. The district lists 81 faculty members with 20 new teachers expected to handle a larger enrollment.
Mrs. Gale Barry of Carthage State Bank is on a two weeks vacation. The Barry family is staying with L. A. Barry and family in Thomasville, North Carolina, and will return home together after their vacation.
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Heim were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. James Pope and daughters at Zenia Illinois. En route home they visited Mr. and Mrs. Billy Watkins near Nashville Indiana.
The Walnut Ridge Quarterly meeting attended the Indiana Yearly Meeting at Earlham College in Richmond August 12 to 18. Rev Raymond Breaker was elected Yearly Meeting Clerk. Most Walnut Ridge pastors return. Dr Beeson of Greenfield resigns to focus on medicine. Rev Paul Haley and wife Freeda from Indianola Iowa become Greenfield pastors.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Beise of Stark Florida welcomed a 7 pound 11 ounce baby boy on Wednesday August 24. Mrs Beise is the former Mary Anne Shutt daughter of Mr and Mrs Russell Shutt of Carthage.
Mr and Mrs Ed Carroll and family returned home from a four day vacation spent at Silver Lake northwest of North Manchester Indiana.
Mrs. Elmina Parish is slowly improving at home after three weeks of illness. Mrs. Roscoe Brown underwent major surgery last Friday morning at Community Hospital in Indianapolis, room 531-D. Mrs. Edgar White, wife of Rev. Edgar White of Fountain City, formerly Carthage, is in critical condition at Winchester Hospital. Mrs. Maria Gray remains about the same at her daughter's home with Mrs. Albert Ray and sons.
Tommy Pearson and Stevie Ellis attended a week at Taylor University basketball camp. Citizenship awards were given to one boy per floor among forty per floor as 109 boys participated. Families from both sets attended the banquet Saturday night and brought their sons home.
Carthage tops Greenfield 7-1 to claim the Greenfield League championship. The Merchants advance to 8-1 in league play and 21-6 overall, with Gary Stewart striking out 2 and allowing 4 hits. Roster includes Eldon Plank Rex Edwards Bob McCorkle Fred Magee Cocky Shutt Ronnie Magee Mel Mc Corkle Elmore and Stewart. The team has six league titles in three years. Trophy display noted in The Citizen window.
The fourth set of twins arrived at Hancock County Hospital on August 22. Roy Randall and Ray Richard weighed 4 lb 6 oz and 4 lb 4 oz. The Jenkins family includes two other children and seven surviving twins. Mrs Jenkins is the daughter of Hattie Campbell and the late Henry Campbell.
Mr and Mrs Cecil Nichols of Morristown and Mrs Myrl Mann of Carthage visited Miss Jimmie Andis at Mt Carmel Hospital Columbus Ohio for observation and eye treatment. Several families attended reunions and visited relatives in Tipton Greenfield Rushville Fairmount Cadiz Versailles and Bloomington with multiple siblings cousins and guests named.
Sunday guests of Mr and Mrs Raymond Kennedy and family included Judy and Lynn Kennedy and Mrs Lena Newsom along with Mr and Mrs Raymond Thompson and Mrs Charles Walls of Kokomo. Greenfield visitors, Mr and Mrs Robert Stanley and daughter joined Sunday afternoon at Mr and Mrs Roy Stanley and daughter. Weekend guests of Mr and Mrs Caleb Marsh were Mr and Mrs John Weathers of Fredericksburg Indiana. Clarence Heim and sons recently traveled to Mc Allen Texas to visit daughter Mrs Larry Morris and Mr Morris. Mike Heim plans to return home this weekend with the Morrises who will reside in Indiana.
The Indiana State Fair runs August 31 to September 8 with free contests concerts and ceremonies. Highlights include the Miss Indiana State Fair crown August 30, Opening Day August 31, a Horseshoe Pitchers Association tournament through September 5, daily Newsboys Band concerts, a high school band parade September 1, and official ceremonies featuring Governor Handley and Earl Butz.
Rush County 4-H members ready exhibits heading to the State Fair. Visitors are invited to the 4-H Exhibit Building to view displays from Clothing Crafts Electric Food Preservation Foods Home Improvement and Photography by listed 4-H members including Nancy Norris, Carol Bradfield, Becky White, Harriett Kuhn, Amy Addison, and Richard Waits.
A family reunion and cooperative noon dinner gathered relatives at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Melcher near Greensburg Sunday. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Harry Elder of here, Mr. and Mrs. William Lockridge and son of Muncie, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Cappel of Greenfield, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Elder of Homer, Mr. and Mrs. William Owens and daughter of Indianapolis, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Melcher and daughter of Columbus, Mrs. Grace Melcher, and Mrs. Olive Weber of Greensburg.
Mr and Mrs Elmer Fenner and their son Larry returned from an eight day trip to Clintonville Wisconsin where they visited Rev and Mrs Kenneth Kuebler and family The group visited The Dells Egg Harbor and Green Bay.
Mr and Mrs Charles Whitfield and children Joe and Amy and Mr and Mrs Paul Rector and son George of New Castle returned from a ten day vacation at Indiana Dunes State Park near Michigan City.
The Christian Women Fellowship will gather next Thursday September 1 at 2 p.m. at the church. Hosts for the meeting are Gladys Geise Bessie Reddick and Betty Sullivan.
Mr. and Mrs. Orville Porter, northeast of Rushville, and Mr. and Mrs. Howard Linville and Gary, near Carthage, returned Saturday from a visit with A2C Mark Porter in Denver, Colorado. Their route included the Black Hills of South Dakota and other northwest points of interest.
Services were held Thursday at 2 p.m. for Amanda C. Turner 87 who died Tuesday at her daughter’s home in Rushville Rush County. Born May 16 1873 she was the daughter of Andrew and Polly Moore and widow of Henry Turner who died in 1941. Survivors include two daughters Mrs Lawrence Price and Mrs Joseph Butler six grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Burial was in Hannegan Cemetery after services at Master and Sons Mortuary led by Rev Raymond V Smith and C C Fields.
The August Rush County United Fund meeting at Rushville National Bank reviewed ongoing prep work for the fall drive. Chairman Frank Moore urged full attendance and reported progress by all departments. Mrs Frank Alexander Mrs George B McNabb and Mrs Forest Beck will attend the state American Legion Auxiliary convention this Friday Saturday and Sunday in Ft Wayne Indiana They will be registered at the Keenan Hotel Ft Wayne
Ed Carroll, noted local golfer, will participate next Sunday in the annual Hole-in-one Tourney sponsored by the Indianapolis Star. The event takes place at an Indianapolis golf course with registration closing at 12 30 p m for players who scored a hole in one during the past year.
Bob Winters, proprietor of Winters Accounting Service, has combined his two offices into his home at 108 North Walnut Street Carthage. He previously operated from his residence and the Carthage Jewelry Store and now offers complete consultation tax service and notary public work on site at convenient hours. The Chi Rho group met August 22 at the Christian Church. Pledges to the Christian Flag and Bible were recited. Sherry McKain and Karen Siler led songs. Eleven members one teacher and one visitor attended. Larry Bush gave the lesson and Billie Henley led prayer. Refreshments were by Jerry May and Roy Blessinger. News Reporter Karen Siler.
Jay Wehr of Union County exhibited the Grand Champion barrow at the Seventh Annual Southeastern Indiana District 4H Market Barrow Show and Sale on August 22 at the Rush County Fairgrounds. Hygrade Company bought the lightweight Hamp shire barrow for 1.00 per pound, 210 pounds, $210. Reserve Grand Champion was Cathie Groves of Hancock County with a 235 pound Poland China sold for 0.35 per pound. The sale saw 217 hogs, with Hygrade purchasing 90 head and other buyers from Indianapolis, Milroy, Cincinnati, and Cambridge City. Col. Hoyt Vanderbeck of Falmouth auctioned the sale.
The 1960 Indiana State Fair opens August 31 with an Old Timer Exhibitors' Party for 10 year plus exhibitors in the Women's Building. A luncheon awards "Old Time Exhibitors" and ribbons greet guests as the Fair runs through September 8 with daily L. S. Ayres Style Shows and new demonstrations. Pie Day offers $75 in prizes.
Mr and Mrs Robert Winters and their two sons travel this week with his sister and her family in Washington DC They plan to return to Carthage on September 1st.
Mrs Thelma Kendall of Hermiston Oregon spent the past week at the home of her son Rev Robert Kendall and family.
