Rush county 4 H Club members count 110 entries for Indiana State Fair at Indianapolis September 3 4 5. Exhibitors include Robert White with Hampshire lambs Donald Staten Jr with Angus and Hereford steers and two Angus heifers and Donald Cook with garden and poultry entries.
The Winfield grocery will transfer ownership on August 30 to new owners George Apple and John Lynch, ending Arthur Winfield’s 25 year business career. Winfield bought the shop May 12, 1919 from R. E. Henley, who ran it 31 years. He credits patrons and hopes the new partners maintain service and merchandise quality. Winfield plans no definite immediate plans after retirement.
DeWitt Foster and Pastor J A Reynolds lead as the Bible school gathers at 9 30. Worship begins 10 30 with special music and a sermon meditation on the theme Lessons From The Dewdrops. Youth fellowship meets at 6 pm and mid week prayer and Bible study Thursday at 8 pm.
Howard Crim, Pastor. Carthage and Blue River churches announce Sunday school at 9 30 and class meetings at 10 30. Prayer meetings scheduled: Thursday 8 p m in Carthage and Wednesday 8 p m in Blue River.
Dr. J. T. Scull minister leads Sunday services at Fletcher Methodist with Sunday school at 9 30 and preaching at 10 30. The subject is Hostilities Have Ceased What Now.
Basil Stultz pastors East St Church with Geo B Moore and Cecil Pike assisting. Sunday school at 9 30 followed by communion service.
Mrs. Robert Walker and her son Duane of Greenfield are spending a few days with her parents Mr and Mrs Edgar V Ruby.
A two day farm terracing demonstration with mechanical equipment will occur August 30 and 31 on the Evans farm five miles south of Greencastle. The program includes a farm pond for livestock water, sod water ways, gully filling, pasture renovation and contour farming with transportation coordinated through the county extension office.
County agent C G Spuller warns ninety degree heat hurts egg quality and urges gathering eggs at least twice daily. Purdue’s E R Menefee notes housewives complain about egg quality most. Use open wire trays, cool quickly, and market eggs often. Remove roosters in summer to ensure infertile eggs.
Mrs Wilbur Gatewood has word that her husband Wilbur Gatewood has been promoted to Petty Officer second class. He serves aboard the U S S Minneapolis somewhere in the Pacific.
The one hundred seventh annual homecoming will be celebrated at the Old Beech Grove church two and a half miles north of Carthage on August 26. Morning worship at 10 45 and afternoon service at 2 00. Rt Rev John A Gregg Rev J P Wallace and Rev J Clinton Brown lead the day. Welcome to attend.
A Monday traffic accident south of Carthage left Bearl Miller with serious bruises after a coupe collided with a truck and trailer. Miller, returning home with 85 chickens, survived without broken bones though in pain. Glen W. Myer and Frank Colby of Morristown escaped unharmed. The chicken coop was wrecked. 15 birds survived, meat saved.
A Sunday morning sacred musical program at Fletcher Methodist Church drew an appreciative audience. Performers included Mrs. George Hogsett Mrs Holt Hughes Janet Hogsett William F Moster Rosemary Manche and Henry L Stinger with vocal solos duets violin and blaringt solos amid the regular service. Dr. R O Pearson district superintendent attended along with Rushville residents.
The W C T U met in the library at 2 pm on Thursday with song and scripture. Officers elected were President Mildred Nigh Vice President Thekla Stinger Secretary Mary Gray and Treasurer Emil Burkher.
Last Monday a group of 23 Rush county draftees reported to Indianapolis for medical exams. Among them four hailed from here Gale Benjamin Barnard Jack Benton Moore Homer Clinton Fannin and Elvis Junior Brown who had registered locally and moved to Oakland Kentucky. Induction is expected to bring about fifty thousand recruits into the military services over a period of time.
Henry Stinger's display of Indian relics in the Citizen window prompts Carthage residents to recall Blazing Star a Cherokee buck who visited in the 1880s. Lineback recalls the famed arrow shooter who lived in Carthage with brief interruptions and lecturing tours dying February 2 1893 at age 32 and was the town’s first burial in Blue River cemetery.
The Missionary meeting of the Wesleyan Methodist church will meet Wednesday after noon August 29 at the home of Mrs Nina Bentley west of Carthage. Anyone desiring transportation contact Mrs Julia McMichael.
Word from Apple Goin column reports Second Lt. Lawrence M Apple of Fort Mc Clellan Alabama wed Miss Powese Goin of Charlotte North Carolina in a Silver Chapel ceremony at 9 p m on August 9. Chap lain Bancroft officiated and attendees included Lt and Mrs Pierce A formal dinner for officers and wives of Co D 29th Battalion followed at Remington Hall. Apple is son of Mr and Mrs George Apple of Carthage and is a local school graduate.
Club secretary Parvel Moore announced the Lions will meet next Monday night. He joked about Howard Henley being out of town with two attendance collections upcoming. A pool tournament will start at the meeting.
Jack Gray of Richmond bought the Carthage Hardware Store last Monday and the store is closed for invoicing. Gray has a wife and son in service and plans to move there after securing a house. He brings 17 years in Richmond’s insurance business and will greatly expand stock as civilian goods manufacturing increases. Mr. Chappell will stay with the store for a time under the new owner.
The boys and girls 4-H joint meeting met at Glennie Mann’s home with Phyllis Small and Robert E. White in charge. Assistant county agent Harris spoke on Junior Leader blanks and fair and picnic plans, then a V J Day tribute preceded a weiner roast. Rush County judging team members Gardner White Rigsbee Staten Jr. will compete at the state judging contest in the 4-H state fair.
Funeral services for Earl Tweedy were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Hannegan Christian church with Rev. James Myers in charge assisted by Rev. Ernest Addison of Knightstown. Mrs Myers and Miss Maxine Maple sang. Pall bearers were Cicero Linville, Russel Siler, Fred Maple, Lawrence Price, Donald Stoten and Ora Walls. Burial in Glencove cemetery in Knightstown.
Mrs Dale Earnest underwent major surgery at Methodist hospital in Indianapolis Monday. She is getting along nicely and recovering.
Mrs Loyall Hunt and daughter Alice along with Mr and Mrs Elmer Hunt Mrs Sharon Hunt Mr and Mrs Lincoln Myers and Mr and Mrs Albert Ray attended the marriage ceremony of Miss Margie Ogden and Walter McAdams in Marion Sunday afternoon.
Pfc and Mrs Lowell Nelson were in Indianapolis Monday for undisclosed personal reasons, with no further details provided on activities or outcomes.

The Ripley Historical Society met at the Spangler home for dinner at 7:30 with antique decor and coal oil lamps. Henry Stinger led two street naming contests awarding prizes, Miss Charlotte Moore sang, and Fred Smith spoke on antique mechanical musical instruments. about 35 attendees including several out of town guests.
Walter McAdams pastor of Walnut Ridge Friends Church and Margie Ogden wed Sunday afternoon at 3 30 in the Second Friends Church Marion Rev Luther Addington officiated. The newlyweds will reside at Mooresville.
