Capon Gains Questioned by South Dakota Expert

G L Stevenson of the South Dakota Agricultural College finds a ten percent gain for capons overly optimistic after experimental comparisons. Lighter breeds like Leghorns showed no gain. Sudan Grass Reinforces Droughted Minnesota Pastures

Minnesota farmers facing drought find Sudan grass a viable pasture option. Drilling 380 pounds of seed per acre yields pasture in 40 to 50 days under normal conditions per A. Amy of the University of Minnesota. For soil with favorable nutrients, 12 pounds of scarified sweet clover per acre should be inoculated, while rape serves well for hogs and sheep at four pounds per acre. A corn crop planted 2 to 4 inches apart can supply seed and extend pasture later in the season.
