In Arlington League Tourney action on Wednesday night Carthage Merchants fell 8-2 to Thomas Market of Shelbyville. They will host a double header next Wednesday at the local diamond against the same Shelbyville squad.
Loran Spence an 18 year old from Carthage was charged with disturbing the peace and reckless driving after a 12 30 a m incident on U S 52 east of Arlington. Deputy Wayne Peters filed the charges and Spence was ordered to appear in Rushville Justice of the Peace Court within five days.
At 7 15 am last Thursday a two car collision at North and Spring Streets Green field left Maude E Shutt R J Carth age a 1961 Ford Falcon struck by Mary G Mason 67 Franklin. Shutt neck pain and Loretta M Kline 40 Carthage head bump. Damages about 275 dollars. Mason charged with failing to stop at the intersection.
Mrs. Frank Overman entered Hancock County Hospital last Thursday. C B Mummert of R 1 Carthage entered Rush Memorial Hospital Friday for observation and treatment. Mrs. David Ray shows improvement convalescing at her Carthage home. Mrs. Grace Gurley remains about the same at Rush Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Oran Henley is improved at her Carthage home. Earl Herkless shows improvement at the home of Mr and Mrs Joe Alexander. Ralph Truitt admitted to Rush Memorial Hospital late Wednesday night. Mrs Eugene Reddick entered Rush Memorial Hospital last week. Vacationing couple Mr and Mrs Dale May and sons Jeff Bobby and Stevie enjoyed four days sightseeing in Chicago and time at the Science and Industry Museum. In northern Indiana they visited with Mr and Mrs Trees Jackson at Angola and with Mr and Mrs Peter Colwell and family, former Carthage residents.
The winter Mixed League Bowling team of Carth-Knight Lanes will hold an organization meeting on Wednesday August 25 at 8 p.m. at the Carthage Community Center. All interested bowlers are urged to attend as new rules and by-laws will be set.
Carthage High School junior team edged the fathers 11 to 9 last Saturday at Ripley field diamond. Tom Pearson led the school offense with two home runs and a single while Lewis Lafuse Claude Pearson Pete Ewing Shorty Maefield Bob Nigh Bob Zimmerman Elmer Porter and Bill Gatewood starred for the fathers.
The Fletcher Methodist Church of Carthage announces a public smorgasbord to be held Saturday September 11. Hosted by the church ladies, the event will feature advertisements and further notices in this newspaper.
A Knightstown Banner critique argues no official action on school reorganization exists and accuses the Rush County Committee of bungling the process. The letter defends Ripley Township Carthage schools citing a long local tradition, strong academics and athletics, and warns against losing local control through further state plans. It questions proposed tax levies and urges five townships to unite or risk eroding community institutions.
The 4 H Club gathered with nine members present. President Marty Matlock led the meeting, Tom Smith led pledges, and Kelton Stacy led the 4H Flag pledge. A forthcoming party was planned for Whitewater State Park on August 20 with an 8:00 a.m. departure from school. Mike McKain demonstrated photography and led a group song, and Tom Smith adjourned the meeting with Kelton Stacy seconding.
Carthage routed Gempro 10 0 in five innings as Patterson limited Gempro to two hits and Muir and Magee doubled for Carthage. Thomas defeated Shelby Merchants 5 3 as Olinger tripled and Cole doubled. Shelby outhit 7 to 3. Weekend guests Mrs Lillian Kennedy Durocher of Chicago visited Mrs Jesse Kizer in Carthage after an Europe tour.
Miss Donna Roberts daughter of Mrs Hazel G Roberts of Carthage received her high school diploma from Carthage High School after eight weeks of summer school at Knightstown. She was one credit short at graduation in May.
The Twelfth Annual Southeastern Indiana District 4H Barrow Show and Sale will be Aug 23 at Rush County Fair grounds. 176 barrows entered by 68 4H members from eight counties. Show at 8:30 am, auction at 8:00 pm. Judge Glen L. Byler. auctioneer Col Hoyt Van derbeck. Entries by county listed. last year 158 barrows from 64 members. Public invited.
Rush County Commission will open bids August 30 for items including an oil fired steam boiler to replace the 30 year old courthouse heating plant, a new motor grader with at least 100 horsepower, and up to 60,000 gallons of bituminous material. Old equipment to be traded includes a 1960 grader, an 85 horsepower plow vehicle, a ten year old industrial tractor, and a maintainer.
Indiana Yearly Meeting is being held this week at Earlham College in Richmond. Several from the Walnut Ridge Church attended the banquet on Friday night and youth delegates Dan and Dave Hunt spoke for their church.
The 1918 Carthage High School class held its reunion on August 12 1965 at the Durbin Hotel Rushville with seven members present fourteen graduates total. Attendees included Irene Garfield Hazel Souder Beatrice Hunt Ruby Josephine Schumpert Nina McClintock Claribel Winslow and Maude Porter. The group later socialized at Maude Porter’s home and recalled the May 10 1919 commencement with George R Grose speaking and the Montana orchestra performing. Class officers elected were Henry Stager Elsie Rhodes Nina Moore and Opal Terry.
Union County records show 4 head by 1 exhibitor and 3 head by 1 exhibitor in the Bartholomew division, indicating small but steady participation across categories.
Willett H. Parr Jr of Parr, Parr, & Richey to address the Rush County REMC Annual Meeting at Rushville Gymnasium on Friday night. Registration starts at 6 p.m. and Hugh Weber, president, will open the program at 7. Reports, board elections, and entertainment by Vario Bros. follow.
John Miner observed his 90th birthday Sunday at home in Carthage. Attending were his sister Elmina Parish and sister Gola Bowman with families from New Castle, his daughter Mrs. Mable Manche, and evening guest Eston Macy from Arlington. Cake ice cream punch and mints were served.
The 44th Leisure reunion was held August 15 1965 at Rush Co fair grounds Community building with about seventy attendees. A cooperative noon dinner preceded a business meeting where Mrs Russell Leisure of Carthage R.pA reported. Officers elected for 1966 were Russell Leisure president Robert Campbell vice president and Mrs Russell Leisure secretary treasurer. A social afternoon followed and the 1966 reunion will be at the same Rushville location.
A cooperative dinner Sunday at the home of Don Addison of Knightstown R R honored his son and family Howard Addison and five children from Hyattsville Maryland. Guests included Jesse and Peggy Addison, Earl Addison, Clarence Pauley from Carthage, Marshall Gardner and daughter, Melvin Manning and children from Greensburg, Walter Gardner near Mays, and Bearl Addison. The Addison family left Tuesday for Maryland after visiting Knightstown Mays and Connersville.
Sunday evening guests included Mr and Mrs Glen Peterson of Swayzee. Wednesday and Friday suppers featured Miss Josephine Farley of Marion and Mr and Mrs Frank Roof of Anderson along with Mr and Mrs Floyd Hendricks of Florida.
