Philip C. Winslow son of Mr and Mrs Howard Winslow won the Rushville boys health contest with a 97.5 score beating eight other competitors. Robert Meyers of Noble township took second with 97.1. Winslow, a Ripley township 4 H Booster, will represent Rush county at the state 4 H Roundup at Purdue University next spring.
Chairmen for all townships except Washington have been named to lead the Willkie for President club drive in Bush county. A Monday night meeting outlined plans for a pilgrimage to the notification program in Elwood on Saturday August 17. Indiana Willkie club members are expected to have a reserved section at Elwood to view ceremonies. Township chairs include Earl Barnard Orange J W Aikens Center Joe Brown Rushville city Chester Stevens Rushville Mrs Leslie Hinchman Union Al Carr Ripley E M Perkins Walker Darrell Rowan Jackson Mrs Elbert E Meek Anderson Mrs Laverne Farthing Richland Albert W Rigsbee Posey Harold Frakes Noble. Washington chairmanship is unnamed.
Indiana State Fair organizers announce Farmers and Farm Organization Day on September 5 with a parade of bands floats and livestock and cash prizes. Lt Governor Schricker outlines committees and a drive to set an all time attendance record at the Hoosier Exposition and requests participation details from interested groups and individuals.
The Walnut Ridge quarterly meeting of six Friends churches in Walnut Ridge Little Blue River Westland Charlottesville Greenfield and Carthage meets Saturday August 10 at the Walnut Ridge meeting house west of Carthage. Worship opens at 10 with Rev Erroll Elliott of Indianapolis to speak. Ministry and oversight meet at 11, lunch at noon, followed by the business session. This is the last quarterly meeting before yearly meeting and all departments are expected to report.
At a Monday night town council meeting the board voted unanimously to install four 1000 watt street lamps at key locations: Main street railroad crossing north end, Fifth and Main, East 1st end, and East street between the railroad crossing and Harrison street. Residents had complained about nighttime darkness due to shade trees.
Ruby McGeorge of Carthage is enrolled in Butler University post summer school for a three week period starting August 5 to work toward a Bachelor of Science in Education. Courses cover botany education history speech and physical education with three hours credit. Tony Hinkle's Coaching School runs for men and a Sports Clinic for women supervised by Louise Schulmeyer and Rachel Benton.
Funeral services were held Monday at 10 AM at Lyman funeral home Greenfield for Court Souder 46 who died Friday evening at Sunnyside sanitarium near Oakland. Burial followed in Greenfield cemetery. Survived by widow two sons Russell and Wayne mother Mrs James Louder two grandchildren one half sister and two half brothers.
Gene Silver son of Mr and Mrs Lee Silver of near here is ill with scarlet fever at Riley hospital Indianapolis He was brought to the hospital after suffering severe burns when he touched a high voltage line at his home He is reported in a serious condition.
Mr and Mrs Fred Sohn escaped injury Tuesday night when their car was badly damaged in a collision in Cumberland. An automobile pulled from a curb directly into the Sohn car as it passed. One side was smashed, but the occupants were uninjured.
Mrs Russell Kennedy and her daughter returned from Lima Ohio where they were summoned by the serious illness of her mother Mrs Harley Meyer who had a major operation at Saint Rita hospital in Lima last week Ruth Ann Kennedy Kennedy’s sister had been visiting and travelled back to Lima
Mrs. Claude Henley sister of Mrs. Earl Addison was taken ill on a vacation trip to Michigan. She was moved to her home in Elkhart and then admitted to hospital for gallstone surgery. She is reported to be recovering as well as can be expected.
Mrs. Eugene Gardner suffered a painful injury Friday while lowering a window in the A. J. Carr office where she is employed. The glass broke and cut the fingers on both hands requiring several stitches.
Mrs. Marie Kellogg of Madison Wisconsin travels with her aunt Miss Eva Johnson this week. They were in New Castle Wednesday with Mrs. Kellogg and Mrs. J A Lineback.
Mr and Mrs Carlos Brooks and Mr and Mrs Bud Smith of this place along with Mr and Mrs Max Nowotne of Terre Haute attended a wrestling match in Indianapolis Tuesday night.
Rev. Murray S. Kenworthy visits Richmond this week as director of the young peoples discussion group at the Quaker Hill work camp.
Mrs Harold Culbertson was the Sunday evening supper guest of Mr and Mrs Charles F Culbertson of near Sexton during a social visit.
Charles M. Dill aged 62 a lifelong Rush county resident died suddenly at his home near Mays Saturday morning at 3 30. Funeral services were held Monday at Center Christian church with interment in Glencove cemetery Knightstown. He had attended the Rushville county fair Thursday despite a period of ill health.
Mrs. Mae Henley 72 widow of Rue P. Henley died Sunday morning in Richmond after a March 1939 hip fracture led to complications. Funeral held Tuesday 10 am at Thompson funeral home with Rev. C V McMillan officiating. Interment in Greentown cemetery. Survivors: one daughter, three sons, four grandchildren, two brothers, multiple relatives. Funeral attendees listed from Indiana and Michigan.
Wendell L. Willkie will accept the Republican nomination in Elwood on August 17 with a program starting at 2 15 p.m. A 3 00 p.m. address follows on the Elwood High School steps. Special trains buses and private cars are expected from many areas. Over 600 police plus 127 state troopers will manage traffic. Parking is free in a 250 acre lot with 26 entrances and amplified sound will reach the crowd.
The Fourth Quarterly Conference of Fletcher Methodist Church will be held at 7:30 p.m. next Wednesday evening August 12 at the church. Dr Joseph G Moore superintendent of the Rushville District will conduct the Conference. Reports will be made by the pastor and church officials and heads of organizations the nominating committee will present nominations for offices and standing committees for the ensuing year. The meeting follows Methodist unification reform making it a Congregational Meeting with full floor and voting privileges for all members except reserved official matters. Public invited to attend with Dr Moore leading a short devotional and addressing the gathering.
The Seventh Ward Women’s Republican Club of Indianapolis urges Indiana residents to display the American Flag on August 16 and 17 as Willkie Acceptance Day. Hoosiers host national visitors and celebrate a native son’s presidential candidacy with patriotic hospitality across rural districts and cities.
The Historical Society will hold a cooperative dinner at the Friends church on Wednesday August 21. After the meal the group will assemble there for a talk by Agnes McCulloch Hanna of Indianapolis, a noted speaker with a background in literature and journalism.
Jackie and Joanne Tweedy were part of a 4-H club excursion train to Cincinnati. The group visited numerous sites in the city, including a river trip on the Island Queen along the Ohio.
Bob Speck of Michigan and an employee of the DeSchip packing company was arrested by Marshal Lon McCorkle Saturday night for public intoxication. He faced a charge of driving without a license and appeared before Justice of Peace Harry Rhodes, receiving a bail amount of 16.90 dollars.
