Mrs. Ella Crawford received word that her son Major Willard H. Crawford has been promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and commands a special troop at Camp Shelby Mississippi. He wrote of meeting several Rush County boys in camp. The Crawford family home is at 2712 Cheltenham Road. The other son Roy is also in the same camp.
County Road Superintendent Frank Lawrence announced that construction of a new bridge on Carthage Knightstown road will start soon after bids are advertised. Delays stem from a shortage of bridge engineers joining military and defense work. The new bridge will straighten the road, replacing the wrecked structure after a semi trailer crash, with about sixty days of construction expected.
March realty activity in Rush County shows $42 601 across 37 transactions. The largest sale was 115 acres in Orange Township bought by Mr and Mrs Herbert G Wagoner for 10 700, with Hungerford selling. Transfers include Anna Williams conveying 70 acres in Ripley to Charles and Cora Brosius and Lindley G Taylor conveying lot 88 in Carthage to Herbert and Nelle Beher.
Mrs Charles W Weis Jr of Rochester NY will speak at the Indiana State Federation of Women’s Republican Clubs meeting at the Claypool hotel Indianapolis on Saturday May 3 The event opens with a luncheon led by Mrs Eleanor B Snodgrass with numerous Indianapolis committeemen and chairmen announced including Publicity Mrs Gaylord S Morton and Decorations Mrs W K Stineman Mrs Lyman Thompson and others Mrs Weis has held multiple political roles from alternate delegate in 1936 to New York State’s representative on the Wendell L Willkie notification committee She also serves on hospital boards and civic groups in Rochester and Monroe County.
Charlie the work horse from Marshaltown Iowa is 36 years old and regarded as the oldest in Iowa and among the oldest in the country. Shown with owner George Flanagan he still has sharp eyesight and can work but has been retired after carrying the U S Mail on a rural route for nine years and farm work prior. A human would need to reach 115 to match Charlie's lifespan based on normal life spans.
Two Indiana women left substantial funds to James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children. From 1939 to 1940, Franklin and Owen counties benefited with dozens of admissions and hundreds of patient days, aiding blind, paralyzed, and crippled children through ongoing care and therapy. The donors’ gifts total 41,800 dollars to support underprivileged children locally.
The main Post Office will open May 1 to sell Defense Savings Bonds and Postal Savings Stamps as part of a national effort. Bonds cost 18.75 and mature at 25 in ten years with a 2.9 percent annualized return, with a $5,000 yearly limit per person and larger investments via banks and mail.
Mrs. Howard E. Henley visited her son James Henley at Indiana University on Wednesday and attended the opera Carmen in the university auditorium that night.
Mr and Mrs Fred Sims with Mr and Mrs John Wallace of Rushville attended the Democratic Editorial Association meeting at the Claypool hotel Saturday evening and attended the Civic Theater that night. Ned Le Fevre starred in Mrs Moonlight as Tom Moonlight. The Sims spent Saturday night and Sunday with Mr and Mrs Benny Duesenberg in Indianapolis.
Sunday night service began at 7 30 with Rev C V McMillan delivering the sermon The program included processional piano invocation by Rev Murray Kenworthy duets the Masters Touch and Sabbath Chimes, scripture readings, benediction and piano accompaniment by Mrs A J Carr and Norma Silver.
James Henley of Carthage and John Sheedy of Manilla won state scholarships to Indiana University, with Don Miller of Waldron earning a merit scholarship. Alternates include Glen Vanatta and others. honorable mentions go to Janet Carr Thelma Wainwright Marjorie Brown and Wallace Cook. Contingent fees of 71.50 are waived for state scholarships. merit awards are 50 each.
The Carthage Raiders baseball team fell 3 to 1 to Lewisville in a five inning game Tuesday. Spacey pitched all five for Carthage and blanked Lewisville until the fourth when two hits spoiled his shutout. Three errors in a decisive period cost Carthage the game as Lewisville added runs on a hit and three errors. Lewisville pitcher allowed only two hits.
Dr Morton D Willcutt chief surgeon of the U S Naval Medical Area at Washington DC has been promoted to Captain of the Medical Corps He is a native of Carthage and recently returned from a trip to South America He served with the U S Marines in France during the First World War
Henry Laird, local New York Central agent, announced a new schedule for trains between Anderson and Louisville starting April 28. Train 139 southbound will pass at 10 17 a m, with current 5 33 p m arrival. Train 140 northbound will arrive at 5 06 p m. The Public Service Commission approves a ninety day trial to boost passenger traffic, or trains may be removed if no improvement. New York Central has long argued operating costs exceed passenger revenue.
Irving St. Clair, a colored man from this place, was arrested Friday night by Marshal Lon McCorkle after a fight during which he allegedly drew a gun. He was jailed in Rush County with a $1,000 bond on charges of assault and battery with intent to commit a felony following a brick-throwing incident that struck Wayman Newsom.
Ripley Township Farm Bureau met Monday night at the local high school with a good crowd. Lamarie Neal read a piece and Robert Walker showed motion pictures from Rushville. Gail McBride spoke on Livestock Marketing and Improvement. Mason of Dean Agricultural Service spoke on casting acreage for castor beans for potential use by Container Corporation in paper making.
The school band performed proudly Saturday night as they gathered at the library and marched to the public square. Dressed in uniforms under Mrs. Harold Phelps’s leadership they played several numbers at each corner, drawing public admiration and hoping for a return date.
Commencement closes the school year with exercises in the high school gym Thursday April 24 at o o clock. Supt W F Loper of Shelbyville will be the speaker.
