The Red Cross drive in Ripley township closed last week at 141.03 above the 1200 quota, raising donations to 1855.03. Workers, joined by many others, are now collecting used clothing for distribution to needy people in liberated war areas worldwide, listing numerous contributors and school grades.
The Citizen helps popularize the discharge pin as the emblem everyone knows replacing the Red Cross cut on the upper right corner of the title page. Dozens of small town papers join the effort to make the symbol widely recognized.
Mrs. Earl Ward of the Red Cross informed the Citizen that the April Blood Bank is canceled due to unavoidable circumstances from Indianapolis. A new date is set for August 23 and 24 with many pledges already given in Ripley County and hopes to proceed then.
Seventeen Rush county students registered for the semester at Indiana University. Two Carthage high school graduates, Marjorie Fraze and Alice Gates, are among them. Register Thomas A. Cookson notes 21 percent of the student body are war veterans.
Cubmaster Wilbur McCorkle announces a Cub Scouts pack meeting to be held this Friday night at the Lions Hall. The notice emphasizes community participation and troop activities.
Donald Cook of Ripley township won the sweepstake prize for a dozen New Hampshire red eggs at the Rushville court house show drawing nearly two hundred contestants from across Rush county.
The Henry Stinger museum display in the Cit izen windows expands with a collection of historical prison restraints. Among the pieces are leg chains, arm cuffs, and small metal manacles used to restrain prisoners, plus five knucks drawing public interest in this grim historical showcase.
Church notices announce Geo B Moore as superintendent and Cecil Pike as assistant. Sunday school at 7 30 p m with preaching at 10 30 a m and 7 30 p m. A dinner precedes an official board meeting. Revival meetings closed Easter morning. Rev Stultz will speak Sunday morning on The Worlds Need.
Carthage church announces a bible school at 9 30 under James A Reynolds supervision. Worship service at 10 30 features a sermon titled The First Sabbath After Easter. Monthly church meeting set for 7 30 Thursday evening.
Dr J T Scull acts as minister with Hubert Hunt and Mrs Arthur White as deputies. Sunday school begins at 9 30, preaching service at 10 30.
Howard Crim pastor at Carthage leads weekly services with Sunday school at 9:30 and preaching at 10:30. Prayer meetings occur Thursday 7:30 p m and Wednesday 8:00 p m. Class meeting follows 10:30 a m Sunday sessions. Mrs Roy Turner assists with Sept schedule.
Winter returns to Carthage as a Wednesday night freeze spared early fruit buds. Despite mostly cloudy skies and chilly winds, frost did not accumulate and growers express belief the fruit crop was not seriously damaged.
Buddy King suffered a bad thumb cut and a bone injury last Wednesday while unclogging a clogged mower at George Zinkle's residence in north Carthage. The mower was left running during the attempt.
Ed Bly purchases McCarty Drug Store from O C McCarty in Carthage last Saturday signaling a career shift for McCarty who will supervise his farms. Bly takes over April 2 and plans Sunday hours 8 am to 6 pm with some help from McCarty who will assist briefly. Bly formerly ran a printing and news business before returning to drugs after seven years as editor and co publisher of the Carthage Citizen.
Earl McCorkle of Carthage, a seven year truck driver, was among Rush county draftees sent to Indianapolis for induction. The group ranged 18 to 37, including single youths and fathers. Eleven of eighteen registrants passed preinduction physicals, including 18 year old William F. Frost.
The Carthage paper notes ongoing strain from crowding and shrinking space forcing editing cuts. Aims to serve community with news but must drop material and trims content to fit. Plans to publish twice weekly as space becomes available.
Mr and Mrs Robert Lytle and daughter Sue of Alexandria along with Mr and Mrs Lawrence Wales of Nameless Creek Mr and Mrs Milton Barry and son Gail near Charlottesville and Mrs bessie Edwards of Greenfield were dinner guests Sunday of Mr and Mrs John White and son and Lil burn White.
Indiana OPA reports that canning sugar forms will be issued starting April 15. Applicants obtain OPA Form R-341 from local rationing boards and mail it back to receive a purchase certificate. Each family member requires a spare War Ration Book Four stamp and sugar limits include one pound per four quarts of fruit and up to five pounds for jams and related products, totaling twenty pounds per person through Oct. 31, 1945.
Pharmacist's Mate 1ic Charles Glen Passwater was killed January 10 in the South Pacific. He lived with his parents in Carthage for years. His father T. J. Passwater was Ripley township trustee. Parents now in Marion where he graduated in 1937 and studied at Indianapolis College of Pharmacy. He worked at Haag Drug Co in Indianapolis and lived with an aunt there. Survivors include parents and two brothers Morris of Muncie and Cpl Thomas Passwater at Camp Pendleton California.
The annual high school oratorical contest will be held at the Friends church on April 12 at 8 p m with nine contestants all girls. First prize will be engraved on the school gold cup and awards are sponsored by A J Carr. Contestants include Jerry Ann Moore Ruth Henderson Alice Ruth Hunt Joanne Reed Rosemary Manche Lois Reames Virginia Cooney Mary Revolt and Helen Sparks. Mr and Mrs Nelson Cook visited Mr and Mrs Ora Clutter near Nameless Creek.
Mrs. George B Moore attends S and E meeting at Mrs Homer Cole's Rushville home. Guests include Mr and Mrs Otto C McCarty and others. Several clubs meet with April 11 13 dates. Easter egg hunt planned for local children. Multiple dinners and visits feature residents of Rushville and surrounding areas including Indianapolis Anderson and Greenfield.
The Ripley drive, part of UNRRA efforts, opens Monday with local groups backing the campaign to collect clothing and bedding for war victims in Europe. Boxes will be placed in Carthage shops. donations should be usable, washed, and sorted by gender and type, with infants wear and bedding among urgent needs.
Carthage Radio and Appliance Shop will relocate from Mill Street to bigger quarters in the Lions club building next week. Owner H. G. Hunt notes a three day closure for moving, with plans to restock postwar items including washing machines stoves vacuums and electric ranges as soon as available.
Homer Bowers and Betty Jenkins visited Homer Bowers Sr. in Middletown where James Bowers, the father, is seriously ill at home.
