In a report from the Breas River Field Laboratory near College Station, 85 calves on oat pasture gained 6,227 pounds total over 4 days for an average of 7 pounds per head and 283 pounds per acre. The calves, weaned Nov 17, 1949, averaged 395 pounds and were treated with branding ear tagging vaccination dehorning and castration. temperature and feed details noted.
Three weeks after breaking clods and leveling the land, Ranger oats were dry planted in October with three bushels per acre. The oats were topdressed in January with 150 pounds per acre of 32 5 percent ammonium nitrate. Twenty two acres border Bermuda grass where calves and cows bedded and grazed briefly on wet days. Cattle were moved March 2 to test pastures as part of the livestock program. The oats are to be cut in May dough stage and baled. Roberta expects a good yield. After harvest the field will be disked and Brabham peas planted to enrich the soil, with oats to be replanted this fall by a new group of calves.
