Savannah News surveys historic quakes from 1700 to 1885, notes Lisbon and Antich, Nova Scotia, and the Calabrian shocks with casualty city by city, then shifts to Georgia convict leases. It cites Gov. Smith’s refusal to comment and Col. Towers detailing current lessees and convict counts across camps and rail work sites.
At a regular meeting of the tent holders on August 23, with Tev A Matthin presiding, a committee was appointed to clear the square and manage church property, open roads around the camp for the convention, and to solicit funds. The next regular meeting is planned for the Friday night before the fourth Sunday in August 1887. Committees include E J Bryant J W Morris J N Nixon and R St Darker, plus a quarterly conference group: G A McDaniel Bowden J W Jeter G D Creel E A Ragell.
