Why He Couldn't Stay A Humorous Matthew Arnold Tale
A brother inspector relays a story about Matthew Arnold as a school inspector. His Edmonton Westminster district was joked as a ridiculous grouping with The Athenaeum as official address and Esher as home. Under treasury rules he would stay or repay travel if two consecutive days required, yet as a poet he returned home and charged fares daily. John Gilpin’s staying question prompts the blue pencil taunt from his rival, the knight of the blue pencil. The account is passed.
