The July 4th event at the A. and M. fairgrounds next Saturday features Rufe Hutchens and Tom Hardwick, rival Senate candidates, delivering addresses. The program includes horse racing a barbecue and various entertainments for the holiday crowd.
Mr. C. V. Fowler gained recognition at the 34th Photographers Association of America convention in Atlanta where 871 photographers entered specimens. Of 103 selected for display two were Fowler’s, one judged perfect by Emmé Gerhard, a renowned photographer who wrote a note appended to the picture. Fowler aims to elevate local patron satisfaction and showcases Carrollton pride.
Former congressman Thos W Hardwick spoke Monday to a large Carrollton audience. He urged voters to elect him to the U S Senate, criticizing Governor Slaton and pledging twelve years of federal service as qualification. He avoided digging into Felder Hutchens and Cooper and planned more appearances for the Fourth of July in Carrollton and Snowdon.
The Children’s Day exercises at the First Methodist church, scheduled for the fourth Sunday in June, are postponed to the first Sunday in July at 11 o’clock. A strong program is planned and the public is invited. The 1914 cotton bloom first arrived at the Free Press office via W S Adams of Mandeville, with others following from local residents, signaling a robust crop and favorable prices ahead.
Hon Lem M Park brother of the late Captain Robert E Park campaigns across the state in an automobile visiting every county before the August 19 primary. His clerk will be Ben F Perry of Jonesboro if he is elected, a veteran country newspaper man partnering with Park to challenge incumbent W J Speer.
Carrollton mail carriers plan to attend the State Convention of Rural Letter Carriers in Atlanta at the Kimball House on July 3 and 4. They expect all Carroll county carriers to join and request gathering there on those dates.
Presbyterian Church announces Sunday services June 28 at 11 am and 8 pm with the evening service on the church lawn. A proposal suggests July and August morning services at 9 am followed by Sunday School at 10 am and invites older members to stay for the classes.
Beginning July 14 the Central railway will operate excursions to Jacksonville Avanta Beach and Tybee at six dollars and to Tampa for eight hundred. Many residents of this section are expected to attend the trips reflecting a busy travel season.
Monday afternoon about one, Emory McCalman fired across the street at Dr. Lewis Hancock as he left the Roop building. The shot missed. Lewis took refuge in W C Robinson's store. A warrant was sworn for malicious intent to murder.
Hon Walter S Coleman of Gedar town spoke in Carrollton and Bowdon on Saturday advocating Wm J Harris for governor. He cited Harris as neighbor, a North Georgia native, and a successful business leader whose stance on the W A railroad deal could influence the legislature.
The Water and Light Commission reported Carrollton water undergone analysis by State Chemist Dr. H. F. Harris. Findings show no turbidity or color, clear appearance, no gas from fermentation, and no contamination evidence. Analysis deemed satisfactory.
Hon E T Steed is being considered to spend time in Atlanta during the legislature session to assist J S Felder in his senate campaign. Steed, a former Felder colleague and longtime state legislator ally, would bring notable influence and familiarity with lawmakers if he accepts.

George Thomas of Temple died from a blow struck Friday noon by Jim Westbrook after a shop dispute. Westbrook was arrested in Atlanta, brought to Carrollton, and held in jail awaiting the October grand jury action.
Congressman W. C. Adamson announces vacancies at West Point Military Academy and the Naval Academy in Annapolis. Four applicants are to be chosen for each place to undergo competitive examinations, with the top scorers receiving appointments. The posts are highly desirable for eligible young men.
Carrollton faces LaGrange in a three game set, after winning 13 to 5 and 6 to 5 in the first two games. LaGrange, touted by local papers, trails as Carrollton aims for a decisive third win and a continued unbeaten run after earlier sweeps of East Point and Griffin. The finale draws the biggest crowd yet with a 9 PM start time, as July 2, 9 and 4 plan the next strong showing.

Dr L G Hardman gubernatorial candidate spent Friday and Saturday touring Carroll and Heard counties after a day in Carrollton. He visited Bowdon Burwell Lowell Roopville Centralhatchee Glentech Ridleys Franklin and other Heard county towns along with Villa Rica Temple and northern Douglasville area. He was well received by locals many already supporters and his strong campaign presence left a lasting impression.
Mr. W. A. Gann of route 6 subscribed to the Free Press this week and explained his farming shift. He no longer grows cotton, focusing on corn, stock, and cattle while avoiding credit, believing the country would benefit from paying as you go.
The committee to raise the balance of the Tabernacle church building fund reports $1,850 subscribed in a few days, leaving $7,150 to reach the goal. Despite a small four member group, progress is rapid as the public responds generously. donors are urged to subscribe when the committee calls.
A large basement with a concrete floor is available for rent. Apply to W J Stewart. The note indicates the owner is seeking tenants, inviting contact for details and occupancy.
The 1914 season opens with a July 4th ball at Borden Wheeler Springs Hotel. Guests from nearby towns and distant cities attend as new dances prove popular. L. E. Berger of Tampa will perform nightly exhibitions and teach the latest steps each morning.
