Charley Yancey Killed by Elmon Buchanan in New Mexico

Elmon Buchanan shot and killed Charley Yancey at a public sale near Bowdon New Mexico. Buchanan, about 23, fled to Carrollton and is jailed awaiting trial. Yancey, about 35, left a wife and children. Eyewitnesses present. no inquest held.

Cotton Ginners Report for Carroll County Areas in 1917

Cotton ginned in Carroll county from January 1 to January 16, 1917 totaled 381 bales with Campbell 226 Coweta 217 Heard 72 Douglas 207 Paulding 228 and Haralson 71. The state total for two weeks reached 14 413 bales. The 1916 crop ginned by January 16 stood at 1 825 693 while the prior year was 1 918 936 a difference of 93 143 bales.

The Lit Mu club hosted by Mrs Charles K Henderson Jr enjoyed an opera program featuring Aida and a Russian tea spread. Mrs John Hume led a salad course with help from Mrs Newell and Mrs Hume as members discussed the 1916 Tax Digest and county finances noting no warrants and strong fund balance.

Pave the Public Square in Carrollton by Joint Effort

County and Carrollton city officials are urged to cooperate to pave the public square. The plan calls for the county to supply convict labor for grading while the city covers half the cost, with details to be worked out later. Strong community backing is requested to move forward immediately.

Mrs G D Upchurch Dies in Carrollton Home Visit

Mrs G D Upchurch died Wednesday morning at the home of her son J E Upchurch in Carrollton after a visit with family. She had joined her husband on a visit the prior Sunday and fell ill Tuesday. Her body was taken to Smith's funeral home for interment. She is survived by her husband and two children J B Upchurch and John Upchurch, plus Hosea Garrett and Mrs W Byelan of the Shiloh community.
