Trial and tragedy unfold in old Franklin County case
John Smith was found guilty of murder with no recommendation. He faces execution on February 5 1886 after a contested trial with a disputed jury contact. A new trial motion will be heard January 12, while Ann Smith Waynot was not pressed. A separate railroad wreck near Austell killed twelve and injured many, with passengers from Georgia Pacific and E T and Wa lines. Gen Toombs dies in Washington, Georgia honors a loyal son.
