The Carroll Free Press announces a rise from 1 to 1.50 a year on September 1 1918 with zone rates up to 2.00 for 6 12 3 and 5 6 zones as costs climb. Six month and three month options are set, advance payment required, and delinquents warned.
The Democratic Executive Committee of Borrroll County adopts a September 11, 1918 primary to nominate two House candidates and one State Senate candidate for the 47th District. Voters pledge to support nominees. assessments set for House, State Senate, and Fourth Congressional District candidates. Deadline for payments is August 15, ballots require compliance.
Will Stevens, formerly with HeinSinl tlh and Tatley Gray & Co, resigns to join A. J. Baskin Co. He will start August 15. Countywide support follows him, with friends praising past patronage and inviting visits to his new quarters.
Judge James Beall entertained family at his Center street home Tuesday. All his children were present including Harvey from New York J Ivey from Mexico Julian from West Point and Mrs Ralph Meeks from Columbia South Carolina. Guests included C Mandeville A C Martin A J Reaves Joe Griffin W H Malone and I W Stone.
In Gainesville Eagle reportage, Senator Warwick denounces Hardwick's remarks as traitorous and demagogic. He cites Watson and adherents of opposition, likening Hardwick to Benedict Arnold and Judas, and urges voters to reject him at the polls.

Georgia reports its first bale of 1918 cotton ginned last Saturday by Clarence T. Tullis of Dovron near Albany. The bale weighed 40 pounds and was shipped to Savannah. Tullis gretted the first bale on the same date as Louisiana’s first bale grown in Vermillion Parish, sold at 40 cents per pound in New Orleans.
Master Clariece Ehrhardt Jr. of Atlanta visiting grandparents Mr and Mrs 8 B Pace was run over by a bicycle rider on Cerar Street near Costar and Neowin streets about 9 PM. He suffered a scalp wound about one and a half inches long and escaped after the rider fled through a passage.
Hon James J Smith announces his bid to represent Carroll County in the legislature. He is a young Carrollton attorney with broad local support and hundreds of friends backing his nomination as the primary approaches in about four weeks on September 11.
The Board of Jury Commissioners met to revise the jury box for the next two years as required by law. The six member board, appointed by the Superior Court judge for six year terms, includes Ty C Mandeville chairman and others named with one vacancy from A G Stephens’s removal. J W Stone acts as clerk. The board will finish its work this week.
The little red spider is ravaging Carroll County cotton, damaging hundreds of bales and risking thousands more if weather changes or farmers fail to spray. The State Board of Entomology explains that severe cold and dry spring dry conditions aid the pest, while wet weather and dust hinder it. Farmers are urged to obtain the State Board bulletin for timely guidance.
The Mission Study class met at 4 p m and teachers at 11 15 p m with profit. Next Monday afternoon the Woman's Missionary Society will meet and present an interesting program. Sunday school attendance rose but no preaching next Sunday. The pastor will preach the third Sunday in August at 11 a m and 8 p m. Visitors from a sister church enriched the service last Sunday. Dr Henderson enjoyed a Montreat retreat this month. Tro Dodd rests from pastoral duties. A preacher from another church faced a rebuke over baptism before aiding a neighboring congregation. Laughter and reflections followed. Rev L W Browder and Rev J W Veneh will attend Shiloh camp meeting from Friday night to Wednesday morning.
Hon John R Spence announces his bid for state senator from this district. Spence is a man of experience and legislative ability well known to the people of this county for many years. Friends expect him to poll a heavy vote.
A Missionary Society program at the M. E. Church features hymns, Bible readings, and vocal duets. Participants include Mrs. E. B. Carroll, Mrs. L. K. Smith, Mrs. Alf Upshaw, Mrs. J. M. Carlisle, and Mrs. C. M. Tonner with readings on Our Possibilities and musical numbers.
Carroll County Chapter A R C requests a large supply of operating gowns to be made immediately. All willing individuals should notify Mrs J Led Young, supervisor of hospital garments.
Beasley singing school at Bowdon offers tuition of 1 dollar to all. Officials aim for 250 pupils next week as doors swing open for new students.
KR F D carrier Paul Brown reports Cleve Bonner on route 3 raised a mammoth 29 inch long 20 pound quill melon. Brown vouches for the melon’s excellent quality and prominence in the area.
