Stunt Party Surprises Carl Steffy on Christmas Eve
A late December surprise party hosted by Mrs. Steffy delighted Carl Steffy and about fifty members of the Boys' Literature Club. The scene featured white and red decorations, a Russian style five course dinner, and festive games including Biography, Menageris, Barnyard, Dictionary, Flinch, and a word list contest. Gordon Hackney won a Bryant poetry volume, and Carl claimed the Alger book Only an Irish Boy as a prize for the Dictionary game. The group judged the evening merry and wished the hostess a prosperous new year.

Beasley Guilty Verdict in Wife Killing Case
After a lengthy seven and a half hour balloting in the trial of George R. Beasley for killing his wife on June 21, the jury returned a manslaughter verdict at 4 p.m. on Thursday, December 26. Judge Henderson pronounced a sentence of two to twenty-one years in the state prison. Beasley and his counsel conferred for about 25 minutes seeking a possible new trial, but none would be sought. Jurors initially split 11 for conviction and 1 for acquittal, then narrowed to manslaughter after several ballots. The judge explained that insanity verdicts would lead to a commission of experts and noted such a verdict would imply Beasley was of unsound mind.
