Grace Girls Attend 4 H Citizenship Short Course in Washington

Cindy Gilbert and Susan Varley represented Caribou County 4H workers at a six day 4H Citizenship Short Course in Washington D C. The trip included Arlington Cemetery tours, visits to the USDA and Congress, Mount Vernon, Watergate, a meeting with Congressman Orval Hansen, and interviews. Cindy faced travel delays returning to Idaho while Susan extended her East Coast visit with her sister in Virginia.

Grace High School students Peter Clegg and Beth Rasmussen receive the American Legion Americanism Award. Peter, son of Grant and unknown Clegg, has held roles from Student Body Vice President to Salutatorian and shows involvement in band drama and youth activities. Beth, daughter of Gene Rasmussen, participates in Girls Track and Volleyball, serves in student government, drill team, F H A, and was Homecoming Queen.

Bailey Creek Roundup Draws Large Entry List

Bailey Creek Roundup in Soda Springs expects over a hundred entries for the July rodeo at Bailey Creek Arena. Sponsored by Terracor and linked to Soda Springs Old West Days, the event offers a $50 added purse per event and features steer and calf roping, bronc riding, bull riding, steer wrestling, barrel racing, wild cow milking, wild horse race, and mini-bull riding for youths. Entries and rodeo queen contest details are coordinated by local Extension Agent Cem Aldatfer and organizer Crystal Brothers with contacts in Dubois.

Miss Jolene Petersen Earns Special Award at Miss Idaho

Miss Jolene Petersen of Salt Lake City, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Petersen, was among 10 finalists at the Miss Idaho Pageant in Boise. She received a $150 scholarship and a special award for personal efforts, noted for her sewing talent and ingenuity. Petersen attends Utah State University as a sophomore.

Caribou Planning Commission reminds residents that all construction in the county requires a building permit. Arrests Stop Vandalism at Chicken Point Campground

Sheriff Marriott arrested three young men at Chicken Point Campground on Blackfoot Reservoir on June 18 1973 for vandalizing two toilets using wood as firewood. Two suspects hail from Caribou County and one from Bear Lake County. They agreed to replace the buildings by June 25 1973 and face further action if not kept.

Vandalism Suspected Prompt Court Action

The sheriff indicated the three cases may go to court for destruction of public property. A tipster alerted investigators that vandalism continues in the area, and Marriott urged the public to provide information to help stop the damage.

Soda Springs Girl Named Idaho Dairy Princess 1973 74

Laraine Barker of Soda Springs was named Idaho Dairy Princess for 1973 74 at the Idaho Farm Bureau Federation contest held in Inkom. She represented Caribou County and was crowned by Brenda Williams. First runner up Elizabeth Hawkes Franklin County and second runner up Diane Benson Blackfoot. Judges included Max Parrish Ellis Smith and Mr. Grace.

Commissioners Urge Sprinkler Safety On County Roads

Caribou County commissioners appealed to sprinkler owners to keep sprinkler heads 45 to 50 feet from roads. They warned spraying water onto county roads endangers motorists and damages road surfaces and shoulders, especially on oiled surfaces.

To Teach In Samoa Watkins Headed for Three-Year Teaching Post

William Watkins of Lyman Wyoming has been accepted by the Church Board of Education to teach at the Church College of Western Samoa for three years. His wife Kaye Allen will accompany him. Watkins specializes in mathematics and has taught at Lyman High School. They will live in a Teacher's Compound and work with local people to prepare students for modern technical careers. They departed Tuesday June 19 from Salt Lake City, seen off by Junius Allen and his daughters Lisa Heidi and Debbie.
