In Menan and surrounding Idaho districts debate over a July 11 levy renewal to fund school maintenance and operations, citing property ownership gaps and growing district needs. Critics warn higher taxes strain families while supporters argue constitutional right to free, adequate education and essential classroom funding.
The Bear Lake County Racing Association and Montpelier Chamber of Commerce sponsor the 1963 Bonneville Futurity Quarterhorse and ES race meet at Montpelier Fair Grounds June 27 to 29. Horses from Idaho to Nevada compete. 92 two year olds nominated. Bear Lake Derby features 26 top three year olds. purses total 5 000 and 1 600 respectively. Also a Bear Lake Thoroughbred Handicap open to the Rocky Mountain region. Trials set for June 27 with James Olsen, 1962 Futurity winner, to present a blue wool blanket to this year’s Futurity winner. Track renovations and new stables and a starting gate added to accommodate entrants.
City notices set camp use rules for Diamond Creek Camp with fees for youth groups and longer stays. Contact Bud Wooda at the county courthouse in Soda Springs and remit fees to the Tenday Council Boy Scout Office in Pocatello Idaho.
The ballot specifies a five year tax period and cannot extend without a new election. The school district lacks funds for building to meet a growing community’s needs, requiring a solution one way or another.
Miss Caribou of 2983 Miss Shyreen Hogan will head to Boise Idaho for the Miss Idaho Pageant on June 28 and 29 She is the Bancroft High School graduate daughter of Mr and Mrs LeRoy Hogan Tickets are available by writing to the Miss Idaho Pageant chairman in Boise Idaho
June Ann Finlayson of Soda Springs Idaho to receive a Stevens Henager College graduation diploma at the annual commencement in Kingsbury Hall Salt Lake City Speaker will be Utah Governor George D Clyde LW Stevens presides. The college founded 1907 operates Ogden and Salt Lake City campuses with L R Stevens directing the Ogden school and Jack M Stevens directing the Salt Lake City school Julie Ann to receive a diploma in a Secretarial Finishing course.
John Woode wife Eileen Jill and Elizabeth D Hartoy from Diepte France visit Soda Springs with Mrs Esie Woodall and the Whiteheads. Mr Woodall served in Paris six years and will be stationed at Widbey Island Naval Base near Seattle. They sailed Le Havre May 28 aboard SS America and reached New York June 4, arriving Soda Springs June 14. Elizabeth will enroll as a part time student later. Francis reports a son asked for garage keys and retrieved the lawn mower.
Soda Springs Farmers form Protective Association to curb tool theft with $50,000 reward. Sheriff Marriott backs the group and invites info. The anual Little Buckaroo Rodeo at Grave Fair Grounds Saturday night features junior riders, a Junior King and Queen, and a single performance with tickets at the gate.
Mrs. LaVonda Lallatin Mrs. W G Shufeddt Mrs R B Williamson and Mrs Robert C Alldaffer represented Golded Red Chapter No 64 of Eastern Stars at the annual Grand Chapter in Coeur d Alene from June 10 to 13. Lallatin served as Registration Chairman Williamson as Worthy Matron and Alldaffer as Grand Page. Shufeldt was Grand Representative to Alabama.
